HW1 2

This document contains 6 homework problems about three-phase power systems. Problem 1 asks the student to determine source voltages given load voltages and impedances in a wye-wye system. Problem 2 asks for line currents and source voltages given a line current in a wye-delta system. Problem 3 asks for load impedance given power and power factor in a wye-wye system. Problem 4 asks for load impedances given line current measurements in wye and delta loads. Problems 5 and 6 present additional circuit analysis problems involving loads, line impedances, and power calculations in three-phase systems.

A wye-wye balanced three-phase system with a phase voltage of 120 V-rms (positive phase sequence) has a line impedance of Zline= (1+j1) and a load impedance of ZY = (8+j3) . If the load voltage for phase a is 104.0226.6o V-rms, determine the source voltages. Ans. Van = 12030o V-rms, Vbn = 12090o V-rms, Vcn = 120150o V-rms

2-2.

A wye-delta balanced three-phase system with a positive phase sequence has negligible line impedance and a load impedance of Z = (12+j8) . If IAB =14.4286.31o A-rms, determine the line currents and the source voltages. Ans. IaA = 24.9856.31o A-rms, IbB = 24.9863.69o A-rms, IcC = 24.98176.31o, Van = 12090o V-rms, Vbn = 12030o V-rms, Vcn = 120150o V-rms

2-3.

A wye-wye balanced three-phase system with a line-to-line voltage of 208 V-rms (positive phase sequence) has a negligible line impedance. The total real power dissipated by the load is 12 kW at a PF of 0.8 lagging. Determine ZY (load impedance per phase). Ans. ZY = 2.8836.87o

2-4.

A balanced three-phase 120 V-rms wye-connected source (positive phase sequence) supplies a balanced three-phase load. Assume the line impedance is negligible. If the line current IaA is measured to be 10 A and is in phase with the line-to-line voltage VBC, find the load impedance per phase if the load is (a.) wye-connected (b.) delta-connected. Ans. (a.) ZY = ( 0 + j12.0) , (b.) Z= (0 + j36.0)

2-5.

A wye-connected balanced three-phase source feeds two balanced three-phase loads that are connected in parallel. The first load absorbs 560.1 kVA at a power factor of 0.707 lagging while the second load absorbs 132 kW at unity power factor. The magnitude of the line-to-line voltage at the load end of the line is 3810.5 V. The line impedance is (0.4 + j2.7) . Determine (a.) the magnitude of the line-to-line voltage at the source end of the line (b.) the total real and reactive power loss in the line (c.) the real and reactive power delivered by the source.
