The Dngzh Festival or Winter Solstice Festival (Chinese: Dngzh; literally "the extreme of Winter") is one of the most

important festivals celebrated by the Chinese and other East Asians durin the !on "hi solar term (#inter solstice) on or around !ecember $$ (accordin to East Asia time)% &n $'()* the festival falls on +unday* !ecember $$% The ori ins of this festival can be traced bac, to the yin and yan philosophy of balance and harmony in the cosmos% After this celebration* there #ill be days #ith lon er dayli ht hours and therefore an increase in positive ener y flo#in in% The philosophical si nificance of this is symboli"ed by the & Chin hexa ram f ("-eturnin ")% Traditional activities Traditionally* the !on "hi .estival is also a time for the family to et to ether% /ne activity that occurs durin these et to ethers (especially in the southern parts of China and in Chinese communities overseas) is the ma,in and eatin of tangyuan () or balls of lutinuous rice* #hich symboli"e reunion% Tangyuan are made of lutinuous rice flour and sometimes bri htly coloured% Each family member receives at least one lar e tangyuan in addition to several small ones% The flour balls may be plain or stuffed% They are coo,ed in a s#eet soup or savoury broth #ith both the ball and the soup0broth served in one bo#l% &t is also often served #ith a mildly alcoholic unfiltered rice #ine containin #hole rains of lutinous rice (and often also +#eet /smanthus flo#ers)* called jiuniang% &n northern China* people typically eat dumplin s on !on "hi% &t is said to have ori inated from 1han 1hon 2in in the 3an !ynasty% /n one cold #inter day* he sa# the poor sufferin from chilblains on their ears% .eelin sympathetic* he ordered his apprentices to ma,e dumplin s #ith lamb and other in redients* and distribute them amon the poor to ,eep them #arm* to ,eep their ears from ettin chilblains% +ince the dumplin s #ere shaped li,e ears* 1han named the dish "qhn jior tng" or dumplin soup that expels the cold% .rom that time on* it has been a tradition to eat dumplin s on the day of !on "hi% /ld traditions also re4uire people #ith the same surname or from the same clan to ather at their ancestral temples to #orship on this day% There is al#ays a rand reunion dinner follo#in the sacrificial ceremony% The festive food is also a reminder that #e are no# a year older and should behave better in the comin year% Even today* many Chinese around the #orld* especially the elderly* still insist that one is "a year older" ri ht after the !on "hi celebration instead of #aitin for the Chinese 5e# 6ear%
