Introduction
CHROMAFIL syringe lters are used for ltration of suspended matter from liquid samples (1-100 ml) or gases. With CHROMAFIL, rapid purication and removal of particles is very simple: just place the lter on the syringe, and you are ready for ltration. Special manipulations are not required. Contamination of sensitive instrumentation by solid impurities can be avoided, thus increasing lifetime of chromatographic columns and equipment. The lter can be used for the sample preparation for HPLC, GC, ICP, AAS, TOC, DOC, IR, NMR, photometry, spectroscopy, . . . Low content of extractable substances due to a high density polypropylene housing In comparison to lters from polycarbonate, polyacrylate or polystyrene, all CHROMAFIL lters are resistant against nearly all organic solvents (see list of chemical compatibility)!

CHROMAFIL - Disposable lters from MACHEREY-NAGEL To provide the lowest content of extractable substances, the housing of every CHROMAFIL lter is ultrasonically sealed
The lters are welded, not glued, because glue may have extractable ingredients The welding leads to a tight connection between the both parts, thus the lter can be used in both directions. No uid can pass the membrane. The special thick rim of the housing is ideal for use in laboratory robots (e. g. SOTAX, Benchmate, . . . .).
For a safe connection on the high pressure side every CHROMAFIL lter provides a Luer Lock on side of entry
For the 25 and 3 mm diameter lter: standard luer exit For the 15 mm diameter lter: mini spike This luer conguration offers low hold-up volume and easy ltration into autosampler vials and NMR tubes Filter inlet and lter exit can be tted to all CHROMABOND columns and accessories for selective sample preparation with the aid of a special adaptor.

Luer Exit
The input solvent stream is broken and distributed by the crash plate and does not directly hit the membrane: this prevents rupture of the membrane. The high pressure stream is so diverted in 4 lanes.
The distributer in star form: The stream is broken by the crash plate in 4 lanes, the optimised distribution of the uid is realised by 8 lanes in star form with 5 or 8 cycles (for 15 mm and 25 mm ID) Through this, the uid is able to penetrate the membrane on the whole surface, not only on a small region; the lter is not plugged up rapidly, which results in a high ow efciency.
Available pore sizes 0.2 and 0.45 m (additional: PET lters with 1.2 m, glass bre lters with 1 m, PES lters with 5 m) Filters with 0.45 m pore size effective remove ne particles that can plug chromatography columns. 0.2 m pore size lters are excellent for ltration of UHPLC samples or other techniques requiring high purity samples.

3, 15 and 25 mm diameter. The small diameter lters are especially recommended for very small samples, which require extremely low dead volumes: 5 l for 3 mm , 12 l for 15 mm , 80 l for 25 mm Recommended lter size depending on sample volume sample volume recommended lter diameter 1 ml 3 mm 1 5 ml 15 mm 5 100 ml 25 mm
All lters can be autoclaved at 121 C and 1.1 bar for 30 min. All 25 mm CHROMAFIL lters are designed to be 100% compatible and reliable for use with the SOTAX AT70 smart fully automated dissolution testing systems.

MN certies CHROMAFIL syringe lters to be low in UV absorbing extractables. All lters and membrane types have been HPLC tested for compatibility with the most common HPLC solvents (methanol, water, acetonitrile, see test chromatograms). HPLC-test certicates are available for every membrane type.

Depending on your ltration task you can choose lter membranes made from different materials: Polyester (PET) with or without glass bre prelter* Regenerated cellulose (RC) with or without glass bre prelter* Teon (PTFE) Cellulose mixed esters (MV) Cellulose acetate (CA) sterile and non-sterile Polyamide / Nylon (PA) Polyethersulfone (PES) sterile and non-sterile Polyvinylidene diuoride (PVDF) with or without glass bre prelter* Glass bre (GF) * Filters with (nom. 1 m) GF prelter provide a 2-4 times greater throughput than lter without prelter for extremely viscous and most difcult-to-lter samples

The table lists the chemical compatibility of our CHROMAFIL materials. The chemical compatibility depends on several parameters such as time, pressure, temperature and concentration. In most cases, CHROMAFIL lters will have only short contact with a solvent. In these cases they may be used despite of limited compatibility. For example, a PTFE lter with PP housing does not liberate any UV-detectable substances during ltration of 5 ml THF, although PP shows only limited resistance towards THF. Data not guaranteed.

For optimal ltration results using CHROMAFIL lter we recommend to consider the following points: We recommend either discarding the rst 1 ml or rinsing the lter unit with 1 ml of primary solvent before sample ltration Before lling the syringe draw approx. 1 ml air into it. This air helps to minimize the remaining uid in the lter Start with gentle pressure at the beginning of the ltration. This helps assure maximum throughput. As the lter accumulates particles, ltration become more difcult and the pressure will increase on the lter. Change lter when resistance becomes excessive in order to avoid housing rupture. Do not use CHROMAFIL syringe lters for direct patient care applications; they are designed for laboratory use only! Do not use syringes smaller than 10 ml; the pressure generated may exceed the 6 bar limit of the lter Do not use at temperatures above 55C (131F) Do not reuse the lter

CHROMAFIL - Disposable lters from MACHEREY-NAGEL Combi syringe lters with a coarse glass bre prelter and a small-pore membrane as main lter
User benets: for solutions with a high load of particulate matter: lower back pressure, easy ltration for high yields of ltrate: more ml of pure ltrate per lter The technology: The glass bre membrane (1.0 m) removes coarse particles, before they can block the ne main membrane. This results in a better ltration efciency, especially for highly contaminated samples. Housing: solvent-resistant, ultra low bleed polypropylene Entry: Luer lock Exit: Luer Pore diameter: 1.0 / 0.20 m or 1.0 / 0.45 m Filter diameter: 25 mm Void volume: < 80 l Packing unit: 100 lters / BigBoxes with 400 lters Available membranes with GF-prelter: Polyester (PET) Regenerated cellulose (RC) Polyvinylidene Diuoride (PVDF)
