Introduction
Extensive media coverage has caused virtual reality to grow rapidly and drawn much attention in recent years. This technology has becomes overwhelmingly popular and applicable in many fields. It makes the virtual world look real, sound real, feel real and the user would effectively immersed in a responsive virtual world. Originally, virtual reality referred to immersive virtual reality where the user becomes fully immersed in an artificial, three-dimensional world that is completely generated by a computer (Giraldi, Silva, and Oliveira). According to Troyer, Kleinermann, Pellens and Bille, virtual reality is a technology to simulate environments and create the effect of an interative three-dimensional world in which objects have a sense of spatial and physical presence and can be manipulated by the user.
Applications Fields
Virtual reality technology has already found its applications and offered enormous benefits in many fields. One of the applications of virtual reality is in the field of psychotherapies. A study conducted by psychiatric researchers found out that virtual reality technology could be used to treat patients suffering from a specific anxiety or phobias such as acrophobia, aviophobia which referred to fear of heights and fear of flying respectively (Fox, Arena and Bailenson). Patients are immersed into the virtual scenes in a virtual world in order to experience a simulated situation that has been created. Besides that, nowadays within the medical field, virtual reality technology is commonly used for surgical simulation for diagonosis, pre-operative planning and treatment. This requires a
complete graphics human database for surgeon to gain fundamental insight into these mechanisms from a purely geometric point of view. Hence, it is important for doctors to be expertise in using these equipments, learn how to operate and explore virtually all the capabilities of surgery. On the other hand, entertainment also play an important role in the development of virtual reality technology especially games and movies. Currently, there is increasing demand for application of virtual reality technology in entertainment and is getting popular and favorable among the society nowadays. For example, 3D movies allow individuals to view and experience more realistic and interesting scenes by wearing a specific virtual reality tools. Apart from that, virtual environment can also be generated to provide different kinds of scenarios for game players to play.
