Unit its Shocking MYP year Level 3 Syed Arshad Mushtaq

Lesson Objectives
Explain the difference between open and closed

circuits Explain what voltage is Draw simple circuit diagrams using the correct symbols.

You plugged in an electronic device!!!

But it is not working what could be the reason !!!!!
Can you figure out!!!!

OMG I forgot to turn on the switch

Electric circuit
For electricity to

flow, electrons must have a path to follow. The path is called an electric circuit.

simple circuits
Here is a simple electric circuit. It has a cell, a lamp and a switch.
wires

cell

switch

lamp

To make the circuit, these components are connected

together with metal connecting wires.

Open and closed Circuit

A Switch to Control a Circuit A switch is used to open and close a circuit.

A switch
A switch is a device that can open and close a circuit.

This allows, for example, an appliance to be turned on and off.

Circuit Diagram
In circuit diagrams, all

connecting wires are drawn as straight lines. Symbols are used to represent different parts of the circuit. The symbols used in circuit diagrams are recognized all around the world by scientists and electricians

circuit diagrams
In circuit diagrams components are represented by the following symbols;

cell

battery

Open switch

Closed switch

Lamp or globe

ammeter

voltmeter

motor

buzzer

Your Turn now

Look at the figure A- Identify what is missing in this circuit? B- Draw a circuit diagram for this circuit in your copybook

Challenge
Draw a circuit diagram

containing one globe ( lamp), a cell, an open switch and an ammeter

End Section activities

What is a closed circuit?

A closed circuit is complete unbroken circuit Which part of a light globe glows to produce light? The filament From which terminal of a battery are electrons forced out? The negative terminal of the battery forces electrons out What does voltage measure? Voltage measures how much energy the battery gives the electrons to move around the circuit

Thinking Challenge
If three 1.5 volt batteries were used to power a torch

instead of two, what voltage would they provide to the torch? 4.5 V Why is it important to have circuit symbols that are recognized by scientists and electricians around the world? It allows scientists and electricians to communicate each other about electricity without confussion

Thinking Challenge
Why is it important for

the strip connecting the batteries to the globe to be made of metal? Because metals conduct electricity

Homework
A- Draw a simple circuit diagram for buzzer at your

home.
Symbol for AC power supply ( the Power Supply at your Home )
