Assignment 1
Assignment 1
A three-story lightly loaded steel frame, 20 m x 50 m office building is to be built at a site. Previous
exploratory boring at nearby sites shows 4 m of moderately stiff clayey fill (Gs = 2.7, e = 0.55) underlain
by about 4 m of very soft clay having average unit weight of 16 kN/m
3
, followed by 15 m of
progressively stiffer sandy clays with average unit weight of 21 kN/m
3
. The ground water table is at a
depth of 2 m. a) How many exploratory borings will be required as per Indian standard? b) Find the
minimum depth of exploration required under a square footing of size 3 m placed at a depth of 1 m
below the ground level and experiencing a column load of 300 kN by considering both structural and
geotechnical aspect.
Question 2:
Derive an expression for bearing capacity of strip footing of width (B) placed at a depth (D
f
) on c- soil
using Rankines earth pressure theory.
Question 3:
A rectangular footing 3 m wide and 6 m long is to be placed at a depth of 1.5 m in a deep stratum of
saturated clay (unit weight 20 kN/m
3
). The water table is at ground surface. The strength parameters of
the soil, obtained from unconsolidated, undrained tests are c
u
=30 kPa,
u
=0
. Consolidated, drained
tests give c
d
= 5 kPa,
d
=23
.
Find the net ultimate bearing capacity using i) Terzaghis bearing capacity using general shear failure, ii)
Terzaghis bearing capacity using local shear failure, iii) Meyerhofs general bearing capacity equation,
iv) Ballas recommendation, v) Hansens recommendation, vi) IS: 6403-1981: under the following two
conditions a) assuming that the rate of application of dead and live loads is fast in comparison with the
rate of dissipation of excess pore-water pressures caused by loads; b) assuming, as the other extreme,
that the rate of loading is slow enough that no excess pore-water pressures are introduced in the
foundation soil. Comment on the results obtained.
Question 4:
The total column load of a footing near ground level is 5000 kN. The subsoil is cohesionless soil with
=38 and = 19.5 kN/m
3
. The footing is to be located at a depth of 1.50 m below ground level. For a
footing of size 3 x 3 m, determine the factor of safety by Terzaghi's general shear failure theory if the
water table is at i) depth of 0.5 m below the base level of the foundation, ii) at the base level of the
foundation, and (iii) at the ground level. Assume no change in the unit weight of soil above and below
the water table. What should be the size of the footing for a minimum factor of safety of 3 under the
worst condition?
