The Winter Olympics

Name: ___________________________ The Winter Olympics, also called the Winter Games, is a major sporting event that occurs every 4 years. Extremely skilled athletes, who are the top performers in their sport, come from all over the world to participate in the games and represent their country while competing to earn a medal. Some of the sports, also called events, at the Winter Olympics include: figure skating, speed skating, bobsledding, the luge (looj), skeleton, ice hockey, curling, and several skiing events. The top three participants or teams in each sport earn medals. The first place winner in an event earns a gold medal, the second place winner earns a silver medal, and the third place winner earns a bronze medal. While some athletes may think that the only thing that matters at the Winter Olympics is earning a gold medal, the most important thing for an athlete to remember is that they had the chance to take part in the Olympics! Many athletes dream of competing in the Olympics but not everyone is able to fulfill that dream. There are only a certain number of spots reserved for athletes from each country in each event. Therefore, each country sends only their best performing athletes in the hopes of winning a gold medal. The Winter Olympics have been held on three continents since their inception, or beginning, in France (in Europe) in 1924. Can you guess which four continents have NOT held the Winter Olympics? Why do you think this is? (Hint: The 4 continents are in the Southern Hemisphere)
Antarctica Northern Hemisphere Equator (warm weather) South America Africa Australia North America

The Bobsled
Name: __________________________ Bobsledding is a Winter Olympic sport consisting of a team of either 2 or 4 people in a bobsled. A bobsled is a type of long sled that has a long, deep seat with sides, but no roof. Bobsledding teams make runs in their sled down a twisty, narrow, track of ice with curved sides. A run in bobsledding is a trip down the track. The bobsled team needs to be careful to steer the sled accurately so that they dont lose control on the icy track and crash. However, the team also needs to have the skill to steer the sleigh along the path that will create the greatest speed. Bobsleds are made of a mixture of steel, metal, and other materials. A bobsled team, also called a crew, is made up of a pilot, and a brakeman. On a 4-man crew, there are also 2 pushers who help to push the sled at the start of the race. On a 2-man crew, the both the pilot and brakeman push the sled at the start of the race. All of the crew members must wear helmets for protection since bobsledding can be a dangerous sport at extremely high speeds. The term bobsled came about because members of the crew would bob their heads up and down to try to increase the bobsleds speed as they slid down the icy track. At the Winter Olympics, every bobsled team participates in 4 runs. Each of the 4 runs counts towards the total time for that team. The team with the fastest total time down the track wins the gold medal.

The Luge & The Skeleton

Name: __________________________

The Luge

Runner

The Luge is a sliding sport. The luge is a small one-person sled with 2 metal runners. A runner is similar to the blade on an ice skate, though much longer. Runners provide the luger with the ability to control the sled. Runners help steer the sled through the ice on a track that is similar to the bobsled. Luge tracks also have sharp turns, narrow sides, and are made of ice. Lugers lay face up on the sled with their feet facing down the track. They are able to steer the sled through a combination of body movements and by shifting their weight on the runners. It takes expert skill to maneuver through the track with great speed.

The Skeleton
When you hear the word skeleton, you probably think of a skull and bones. The Skeleton in the Winter Olympics is a sliding event involving a small one-person sled similar to a luger sled. The event is called the Skeleton because the sled has a bony look to it. Unlike, lugers, sliders in the skeleton race lay on their stomachs and slide head first down the track. The skeleton track is the same track used for the bobsled and the luge. The skeleton is an extremely dangerous sport not only because of the speeds reached on the icy, curvy, track but because of the chance that a crash could occur head-first.

Speed Skating
Name: __________________________ Speed skating is a competitive form of ice skating. Skaters race each other a certain distance around an oval ice rink while being timed. After every lap, skaters switch lanes to even out the distance covered. They do this because the inside curve is a slightly shorter distance than the outside curve. There are several speed skating events which involve 2 competitors racing against each other for the fastest time. The short-track event is carried out on an oval ice rink with each lap measuring 111m (meters). This size track is the same 3,000m, and 5,000m. The long-track event, officially called speed skating, features a longer track. Each lap around the track is 400m (meters), or one-quarter of a mile. This is the same distance as one lap around a running track. Longtrack events include the 1,000m race, 1,500m race, 5,000m race, and 10,000m race! See if you can determine the number of laps around the track it would take to complete each of these races! Speed skates are different from figure skates or hockey skates. Speed skates have longer blades. This allows more of the blade to be on the ice which makes the skates glide faster on the ice.

1980: Miracle on Ice

Name: __________________________ In 1980, in Lake Placid, New York, a miraculous event occurred that stunned the nation and gave confidence to teams and athletes around the world. The Soviet Union had previously won every world championship and Olympic gold medal in mens ice hockey since 1954. Additionally, the Soviets had practiced against the United States a few months before, and had crushed the United States in a 10-3 win. As you can imagine, the United States Mens team was the underdog coming into the Olympic Games. The Soviet Unions scores proved them the best in the world. Even the newspapers predicted that the Russians would easily win the game against the United States. As the game began on Friday, February 22, 1980, the Americans fell behind; however by the end of the 1st period, the score was tied 2-2. In the 2nd period, the Russians allowed no goals, and scored one goal for their team bringing the score to 3-2 with the Soviet Union in the lead. In the 3rd period, one of the Russian players was sent to the penalty box for raising his stick too high. Since Russia had one less player, this was a good thing for the American team and they managed to score another goal. A few minutes later another goal was scored by the Americans giving them a 4-3 lead with 10 minutes left in the game. The Russians panicked and began to take wild shots at the American goalie but they did not succeed. When the clock stopped, the Americans were the winners! The Olympic Rings

Black Blue Yellow
Name___________________________ Have you ever wondered what the Olympic rings symbolized? Many people once thought that the 5 rings stood for the 5 continents that people came from around the world. These 5 continents were North & South America, which were counted as one continent, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Antarctica was not counted because there are no people living there. Are you ready to hear the facts about the 5 rings? If you include the white background, there are actually 6 colors. These six colors were intended to represent the various colors of the flags of the nations that competed in the games, not the continents, which there are 7 of. The United States flag colors of red, white, and blue are represented here, as are Germanys black, red, and yellow flag colors. Think about some flag colors from different countries that you can think of. Are all of their colors represented here? How interesting! The Olympic emblem, or symbol, was designed by a man named Pierre de Coubertin in 1913, who founded the Modern Olympic Games in the late 19th century. He designed the interlocking rings to represent peace and togetherness and to bring together the people of the different areas of the world. His dream was to have world peace. The circular shape of the ring represents unity, or wholeness. Remember what those 5 rings symbolize the next time you see them!
