REFLECTIONS
from the team
Change is in the air
It was the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus who first said that change is the only thing that stays constant in life. On the surface, that statement seems easy enough to understand. Think of the seasons: Fall gives way to winter; winter gives way to spring. School lets out for summer; school starts up in fall. Things are always changing, but we have our rituals and traditions associated with different times of the year. Those things stay the same. Or do they? Now that the holidays are over and the quiet of winter has set in, we have time to reflect on the flurry of activity behind us. Against the backdrop of our yearly traditions, its easy to see how this year has been different from those past. Loved ones have gotten older. Some are no longer with us. Children have grown. Friends have moved on. Some relationships have soured. Others have strengthened. In so many ways, this year has been unique. And next year, many of these things will have changed. As much as we often want things to stay the same, nothing ever does. While this thought might be bittersweet, it also lends a very great importance to the present moment. What you have now you wont have forever. So if its good, we urge you to take the time to appreciate it. Dont put off the little things. If you have an old friend youve been meaning to contact, do it now. If you have a relative in assisted living, visit her today. Send your old classmate an email. Tell your kids you love them. Kiss your spouse. Call your mother. And if 2014 has gotten off to a rough start for you, remember that these difficult times cannot last forever. For better or for worse, nothing does. With that in mind, we hope youll also take the time to appreciate the many insights presented in this months issue.
Phyllis Kasper offers thoughts on the importance of building trust between therapists and patients. Dr. Stephanie Long shares various ways we can protect one of our precious gifts: our hearing. Courtney Cowie discusses how, in order to love another, we must all first learn to love ourselves. And of course, there are many more, so enjoy! And if the cold February winds have you feeling like winter is here to stay forever, remember that change is just around the corner. In health and happiness, All of us at Natures Pathways

ore than 55 diseases have been linked to gluten, the protein found in wheat (einkorn, durum, faro, graham, kamut, semolina, spelt), rye, barley and triticale. Its estimated that 95 percent of the people who have either gluten intolerance or celiac disease are never diagnosed. Celiac disease is estimated to affect 1 in 133 in the U.S. population. Could you be one of those? In November 2013, an amazing event, The Gluten Summit, was offered via the internet by Dr. Thomas OBryan, DC, CCN, DACBN. He is an expert specializing in gluten sensitivity and celiac disease and an instructor at the Institute for Functional Medicine. OBryans passion is teaching the many manifestations of gluten sensitivity and celiac disease as they occur inside and outside the intestines. The program offered new discoveries about gluten-related disorders.
It also helped us learn why it is important to understand the sometimes farreaching effects of gluten in the body and appropriate ways to diagnose and properly treat gluten sensitivity. For patients with celiac disease, eating gluten-free is absolutely mandatory. Many other conditions, such as hypothyroidism and migraines, can be attributed to gluten too,
The Gluten Summit included the following world experts and opinion leaders on the topics of gluten-related disorders, nutrition and healthy living: Tom OBryan, DC, CCN, DACBN David Perlmutter, MD, FACN, Cynthia Kupper, RD Michael Marsh, MD, DSc, FRCP ABIHM William Davis, MD Loren Cordain, PhD Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, Liz Lipski, PhD, CCN, CHN Alessio Fasano, MD MMedSci Dave Asprey Umberto Volta, MD Daniel Amen, MD Nora Gedgaudas, CNS, CNT JJ Virgin, CNS, CHFS Marios Hadjivassiliou, MD Peter Osborne, DC, CNCB Aristo Vojdani, PhD, MSc, MT Mark Houston, MD, MS, ABAARM, Jaqui Karr, CSN, CVD Deanna Minich, PhD, FACN, CNS FACP, FAHA, FASH Sayer Ji Mark Hyman, MD Rodney Ford, MD, MB, BS, FRACP Tom Malterre, MS, CN Jeffrey Smith Andrew Keech, PhD, DSc Suzy Cohen, RPh Yehuda Shoenfeld, MD, FRCP Erica Kasuli, MS, RD, CDN

and respond positively to removing gluten from ones diet. Sadly, some research has shown that it takes up to 17 years to change what is considered the current standard of care and use new research to improve how medicine is practiced. This event was held to help push the recognition of gluten disorders forward much faster. It is hoped that this summit helped patients and their doctors start the conversation on whether gluten could be impacting their health conditions. There were 29 world experts and opinion leaders on the topics of gluten-related disorders, nutrition and healthy living addressing the question: Is gluten the cause of health problems? A list of speakers can be found at www.theglutensummit.com. They are experts at the top of their fields, though some of the scientists have never been heard of outside of science circles. Please check out their various websites, research or books. If desired, you can learn about this cutting-edge gluten research and information in its entirety by purchasing a recording of all of the interviews at the www.theglutensummit.com. You will receive answers youll need to start the conversation to determine whether gluten impacts your health, too. The information that was shared at this gluten summit event was so exciting and I hope many people can benefit from listening to the recordings of these groundbreaking interviews with many best-selling authors, world-renown scientists, dietitians, nutritionists and others. A big part of the problem with gluten sensitivity is the lack of knowledge among the medical community. Patients are misdiagnosed for years before having a chance to restore their health. Getting this information into the hands of patients and the doctors who treat them can help millions of people who are suffering from ingesting gluten.

Craniosacral therapy
A safe, gentle treatment for adults, infants and children
By Sharon Blake, LMT
raniosacral therapy was pioneered by osteopath Dr. John Upledger. In 1975, Upledger became a clinical researcher and professor of biomechanics at Michigan State University Osteopathic College. He led a team of doctors, biophysicists and bioengineers to investigate and test the influence of the craniosacral system on the human body. It is through his research, now taught by the Upledger Institute in West Palm Beach, Fla., that thousands of individuals have been trained in craniosacral therapy and are helping to alleviate many acute and chronic conditions. Craniosacral therapy and the craniosacral system are becoming better understood in traditional health care practices. The craniosacral system consists of the membranes, cerebral spinal fluid and structures from the head to the sacrum (tailbone area). This system influences the ability of the brain and the spinal cord to function properly. When this system is out of balance or restricted, it can cause the body to adapt into an unhealthy misalignment. Fewer restrictions allows for better overall health and resistance to disease. Craniosacral therapy is able to help the body find its correct balance. This is done with an extremely light touch generally no more than the weight of a nickel. This light touch makes it extremely safe for the very young and the elderly. Craniosacral practitioners follow the movement of the
12
Natures Pathways | February 2014
tissues within the body to help facilitate this balance without forcing the body into a different pattern. This same light touch allows the craniosacral practitioner to monitor what is called the craniosacral rhythm. The craniosacral rhythm is similar to your pulse or respirations. However, what is felt is the pulse of the cerebral spinal fluid within the body. The balance, strength and quality of this rhythm are what help guide the practitioner in assessment and treatment. A strong and healthy craniosacral rhythm is a key to helping the body stay balanced. Craniosacral therapy has been used for many conditions and ailments. It is a wonderful treatment for calming down a central nervous system that is undergoing undue stress and anxiety. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) is a common problem for many. Through craniosacral therapy, many have experienced relief from chronic pain and were able to eliminate pain medications and cancel scheduled TMJ surgeries. Headaches and migraines also respond well to the light touch of craniosacral therapy. Additional conditions that can benefit from therapy include chronic fatigue, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), colic and reflux, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and many more. Craniosacral therapy has been known to improve
the quality of life for those with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and autism. Craniosacral therapy is not a massage, even though many massage therapists practice craniosacral therapy. During a session, the client remains fully clothed and no oils or lotions are used. Very specific and delicate manual manipulations are used during the treatment to help relieve pressures and restrictions. Many clients become so relaxed they fall asleep. There are many schools that teach craniosacral therapy, but the Upledger Institute is widely recognized as the leader in both research and training in craniosacral therapy. The institute holds classes at the clinic in Florida and throughout the world. Craniosacral practitioners are licensed health care providers that have completed the required coursework for the treatments they are providing. Advanced certification programs are also offered through the Upledger Institute. Visit www. upledger.com for more information.

he term exotic pet refers to an animal, other than a dog or cat, that can be kept as a pet. Examples of exotic pets include guinea pigs, birds and iguanas. Exotic pets can be perfect companions, but they do require certain care to ensure they live full and healthy lives.
Birds
Some birds can live 60 to 80 years! Birds that get bored can develop behavioral problems, so look for ways to keep your bird stimulated. Talk to your bird often. Leave the radio on for your bird when you are not at home. Provide a climbing structure in the
cage to allow your bird to move around on different levels within the cage. Larger birds, like parrots, need time outside of their cages. Carry your bird around to different parts of the house to give him a change of scenery. Birds like to chew on things. Dyes and treated wood can be toxic to birds, so make sure your birds toys are labeled safe for birds. Often, people feed their birds only seeds, which can be very high in fat. Larger birds also need pellets, fresh vegetables and fresh fruit in their diets. Do not feed your bird avocadoes or tomatoes, as those can be harmful to birds. Birds need yearly physical exams, blood work and fecal exams. The yearly physical should be at a separate visit from beak, nail or wing trimming to help minimize the overall stress for the birds.
Reptiles
Reptiles include lizards, turtles and snakes. Create an environment that mimics your reptiles natural habitat, with proper heat, humidity and terrain. A red-eared slider has different temperature and humidity requirements from a box turtle, even though they are both turtles. Ask your veterinarian for help in determining your

reptiles specific habitat requirements. Reptiles need vitamin D from natural or supplemental light. Use a leash and properly-fitting harness to take your reptile on supervised outings. Keep your pet safe from predators, and make sure the area is free of toxic chemicals such as fertilizers. Reptiles need yearly physical exams and fecal exams.
Rodents like and need to chew on things. They have constantly growing incisors, and if their teeth get overgrown they become very painful for the animals. Provide safe toys for chewing and stimulation. People often feel that rodents are disposable pets meaning that if the pet dies, they will just get another one. These pets are not disposable and they do require health care. Because rodents have a short life expectancy (often two to three years), they age very quickly and disease may occur suddenly. For that reason, rodents need physical exams every four to six months.
months. Because their teeth grow continuously, rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillasmay need their teeth trimmed to allow them to eat well and to be comfortable.
Ferrets
Ferrets are the clowns of the animal world. They love to goof around and play. Provide your ferret with a multi-level house so he can climb and hide. Ferrets need yearly physical exams. They may also need distemper and rabies vaccines depending on their exposure to certain risk factors. If an unvaccinated ferret bites a human, it will need to be quarantined to determine whether or not it has rabies.
Rabbits have very sensitive backs. If they are held improperly, rabbits can kick out and break their backs. Be sure to teach young children the proper way to hold your rabbit. Small mammals need exercise. Allow your pet to roam, either outside or around the house, with your supervision. Use baby gates to keep your pet confined to safe areas. ome call it the monkey mind: that endless stream of thought that runs unchecked throughout the limitless boundaries of intellect. James Joyce captured it in Ulysses, an epic novel written in what analysts call stream of consciousness. But the Russian mystic G. I. Gurdjieff would deny that we rarely, if ever, achieve true consciousness. Have you ever thought about what remains if and when you stop the minds chatter? Kirtan is a form of yoga chanting, intended as a holistic healing experience designed to bring participants into a more organic form of meditation, either in stillness or in motion. One of the oldest of sacred sound traditions, kirtans call-and-response interaction involves Satsang, an ancient Sanskrit term that describes the community that exists between an assembly of people who listen to, talk about and assimilate their impressions of truthfulness. You know the part of the rock concert where everyone knows the words? Its like that, but for the whole time, says Gaura Vani, a 35-year-old Silver Spring dad and freelance filmmaker who grew up in the Hare Krishna movement and is now a well-known kirtan performer. They say one of the sources of trauma is feeling no connection between you and other parts of humanity. When you do [kirtan] chants and mantras, its impossible to avoid the group connection, the sense of communion. Kirtan allows the mind to remain awake and aware while simultaneously becoming quiet, still and centered. It is during the quiet moments between the songs that the place of awareness is often found a feeling of interconnectedness and inner peace. Participants frequently use rhythmic drumming to accompany the kirtan leaders mantras (chanting phrases) in cyclical manner, which may repeat at a faster pace. This method of meditation synchronizes breathing, movement and voice.

Quieting chatter in the mind and becoming centered in the heart is one of the many benets of a regular kirtan practice.
The practice of kirtan does not require musical ability or training; it is about the heart. These ancient chants contain powerful healing and transformational energies that serve to reconnect us to the ever-present and eternal being that lies within, explains
www.naturespathways.com
Milwaukees award-winning kirtan leader, Ragani. All of the mantras, melodies and instruments are designed to lead us toward this meditative state. Although the language of kirtan is often in Sanskrit, the true language of kirtan is universal, because it is a language of the heart. Quieting chatter in the mind and becoming centered in the heart is one of the many benefits of a regular kirtan practice. Anyone can participate, regardless of age or spiritual beliefs. Its about the experience of community that takes place while chanting, once you take a seat, sing and become quietly aware. Kirtan melts the heart, fills the mind with purity and generates harmony, says renowned spiritual leader Swami Sivananda. It is an excellent method to soothe the nervous system and offers us a way of embracing all of our emotions and directing them towards a positive goal.

Question: I am looking for a new machine to mix up my cardio workouts. Can you explain the difference between upright and recumbent bikes? Answer: Both types of bikes are effective at providing a quality cardiovascular workout. The difference between them will be your comfort level on the machine. The recumbent bike might be a better choice if you suffer from back tension or pain. This bike usually has a full seat with a backrest to support you while you are exercising, and handlebars at hip height and shoulder height for added support if needed. The recumbent bike also sits lower to the ground so it will be easier to enter and exit the machine. Upright bikes will feel more like bikes that you ride outdoors and will require you to sit upright and maintain good posture without the aid of a backrest. Handlebars for support will be in front of you at chest height. This machine is higher off the ground, which may make it more difficult to enter and exit the machine. Both bikes will provide the ability to increase or decrease the amount of resistance as you pedal, and will provide a variety of preprogrammed workouts in which the machine will change tension, mimicking pedaling on a flat road
18
Natures Pathways | February 2014
or pedaling on a hill. Take a few days to try out both machines. Explore the console of preprogrammed workouts and decide for yourself which machine is the most comfortable for you. Either way, the upright and recumbent bikes will be a great addition to your weekly cardio workout routine. Question: Im hearing a lot about being gluten-free. Can you explain what that is and why you would choose to eliminate gluten from your diet? Answer: Gluten is a protein composite found in foods processed from wheat and related grains such as barley and rye. Gluten is found in most breads, cereals, pastas and processed foods. There are three groups of people who eliminate gluten from their diet, either by choice or necessity. The first group may have an immunemediated wheat allergy, like celiac disease. This group must follow a strict gluten-free diet, as gluten damages their intestines and triggers harmful and potentially life-threatening allergic reactions. The second group of people who eliminate gluten may have unpleasant side effects because they have a non-immune gluten intolerance or a wheat/gluten sensitivity. This group may experience gas and
www.naturespathways.com
bloating in particular after eating foods containing gluten. Some individuals eliminate gluten by choice, seeing the elimination of gluten as a healthier way of eating. Any time you replace refined grains and processed foods with natural food, you are going to feel better. This might not be the result of going gluten-free so much as it is choosing more nutritious options (less processed food). If you feel you suffer from the various symptoms described from eating gluten, you should be evaluated by your physician to determine if you if you have celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity issue.

believe I am very successful in my career. I am well respected by supervisors and peers and I have advanced into more and more responsible positions. But when it comes to my relationships with men, I feel like a total failure. I am in an upper management position and feel very competent when I am at work. When I go home to my wife and children, I feel powerless and incompetent. Why is it so difficult to have a loving relationship with my partner? We love each other and we both want to be happy. In last months Natures Pathways article, I mentioned that being in a relationship is like deep-sea diving. I have been a marriage counselor for many years, and I am very skilled at helping couples learn how to communicate and resolve conflict in ways that create more intimacy. However, in my own intimate relationship, I find myself breaking the rules that I teach to others. Instead of trying to share who I am and what I am feeling authentically, I fall into
familiar self-defeating patterns that come from the desire to be unconditionally loved and accepted at any cost. Why? To find the answer, I must go deep-sea diving: meaning deep-self diving. Researchers tell us that the desire to be unconditionally loved and accepted is hardwired into all of us. Yet, it is impossible for any of us to receive or give unconditional love consistently because of a childhood wound all humans share. All children in various degrees have experienced times when their caregivers did not consistently accept and love them unconditionally. John Welwoods book, Perfect Love, Imperfect Relationships: Healing the Wound of the Heart, explains that it is because of this wound that we are all somewhat cut off from an awareness of our innate internal worthiness. We are lacking the belief that, I matter and we all matter equally. Instead, it seems to be hardwired into our belief system that our inner beauty and worthiness for love isnt real unless it is reflected back through the eyes of another. It isnt surprising that this childhood wound results in a quest to find love, approval and evidence that we are good enough to deserve love and approval. It also sets us up for deep longing for love and a deep fear of not finding it or keeping it. We learn behaviors that actually keep us from having mutual deep, meaningful, authentic relations to others. Miki Fine in her book, The Need to Please: Mindfulness Skills to Gain Freedom from People Pleasing and Approval Seeking, states that the need to please others and not allow them to see us exactly as we are prevents us from ever being accepted exactly as we are. The result is a cycle of repeatedly trying to gain acceptance but never succeeding. We develop unconscious behaviors the are self-defeating doing what others want us to do instead of what we want to do, being chronically nice, avoiding conflict through dishonesty, attempting perfectionism, taking the blame and always saying, Im sorry, being unable

to say no, and other habitual people-pleasing behaviors. These behaviors prevent us from openly and honestly sharing who we are and blocking closeness through a lack of authenticity. I found that when I am experiencing conflict with my partner, I can change my old habits through awareness and nonjudgment mindfulness. Mindfulness helps me to know that the deep love I need is inside of me. It helps me understand my behaviors that created conflict or distance in my relationships. It gives me new behavior options. For example, I can stop being chronically nice and relate more authentically. I can ask for help instead of expecting my partner to read my mind. To free ourselves from the old habits that keep us stuck in our relationships, we need to take an entirely new approach to relating. We cant continue in our people-pleasing ways of relating. A mindfulness practice can bring awareness to our automatic thoughts and feelings that come from our woundedness and thus help us to replace them with the qualities that come from the nonjudgmental side of mindfulness patience, compassion and more concern about inner well-being rather than external concerns of having and doing. These qualities provide a radical new approach and a pathway out of autopilot reactivity to a path of love and acceptance of oneself and others. A mindfulness practice helps with deepself diving through awareness with nonjudgment, bringing more authentic relating to others.

ere almost halfway through the school year now and it seems like things should be settling down. Kids have adjusted to new routines, classes and teachers; regained knowledge lost over the summer; and are ready to take on new learning. Right? While it should be that way, for far too many families the true struggles are just beginning because of a common but often misunderstood problem anxiety. Anxiety is obviously a normal part of life. For kids, its far more likely to cause problems during certain times: the start of full-time schooling, around the age of 10 or 11, and during transitions into middle or high school. Even if your students are in one of these tougher times, if they havent settled in to school yet this year, it may be a sign of a bigger problem anxiety disorder. According to the Anxiety Disorders of America Association, it affects 1 in 8 children. Anxiety disorder is a blanket term that refers to a wide range of mental disorders that impact day-to-day life. Anxiety is now the No. 1 mental health problem in America. One common anxiety disorder is didaskaleinophobia, or school refusal. First dubbed school phobia back in 1941, its now officially recognized by the American Phobic Society and affects an estimated 2 to 5 percent of American kids. A wide range of symptoms include: Refusal to go to school or elaborate plans to avoid school. Missing the bus to school. Illness and pain just before leaving for school. The quick disappearance of physical ailments if the child is allowed to stay home, followed by reoccurring symptoms the next morning.
22
Natures Pathways | February 2014
Frequent visits to the school nurse with headaches, stomachaches, nausea, diarrhea, sore throats, aches and other symptoms that cant be attributed to a physical ailment. Its these physical symptoms that are often the most frustrating, because parents dont always realize they can be signs of another problem. They often spend months chasing the diagnosis with visits to pediatricians, chiropractors, allergists and other specialists. Confounding the problem is the fact that many of these physical complaints are also symptoms of the five most common illnesses that keep kids out of school. According to the Mayo Clinic, the top five absence-causing sicknesses are colds, ear infections, sore throats, pinkeye and stomach viruses. So how do you determine whats causing these symptoms? 1. Talk to your child to eliminate obvious causes like bullying, few friends, learning difficulties or problems at home. 2. Make sure no underlying physical illnesses are causing the symptoms. If you havent been to the pediatrician yet, make an appointment now. And dont be afraid to ask about the possibility of an anxiety-related cause. 3. Get a comprehensive evaluation from a mental health professional. This can lead to a formal diagnosis, treatment and therapy.

4. Have your childs cognitive skills tested at a certified brain
A cognitive skills assessment can pinpoint weak skills and help in the diagnosis of the mystery illness. If cognitive skill weaknesses are the problem, strengthening those skills through intense oneon-one brain training can often greatly reduce or eliminate the symptoms. While searching for answers, work on ways to alleviate the symptoms. If possible, keep your child in school. Absenteeism usually exacerbates anxiety. Continue talking with your child about his feelings, fears and stresses. Meet with teachers or counselors seeking input and support. Pay attention to patterns. Is it worse before a test? Do symptoms subside at home? Strive for a healthy lifestyle with nourishing meals, exercise, plenty of sleep and limited caffeine and other stimulants. Searching for the cause of a mystery illness can be time-consuming, frustrating and even expensive, but keep at it. Eventually, your perseverance will bring the answers you need to help ease your child into a more settled, happier and productive school year.

training center. Cognitive skills are the mental tools we all need to think, reason, read, remember and pay attention. Anxiety is often a symptom of weak cognitive skills, especially if the problems are just emerging now, when the review is over, the work is harder and the expectations are greater. The student gets frustrated because he can no longer easily handle the workload, so he tries to avoid school, homework and other mental challenges. Often his self-esteem will suffer and he becomes more withdrawn or acts out irrationally.

ifferences in libido can be a problem for any couple. In some cases, one partner desires sex less than the other. While all kinds of stereotypes exist regarding the differences in libido between women and men, the truth is that hormonal imbalances and other physiological issues can powerfully affect anyones desire for sex. Fortunately, if a woman wants to increase her libido, there are steps she can take. You may have heard about adrenal dysfunction, also known as adrenal fatigue. The same changes necessary to remedy adrenal fatigue also can help libido issues. Additionally, if a woman is dealing with daily life stresses and has an unhealthy diet, her cortisol levels may be off. This will affect hormones. Once potential adrenal dysfunction and stress are ruled out or addressed, full hormone balancing can help women address their libido issues. This can be done using bioidentical hormones. The typical hormone most people think of in relation to libido is testosterone. This may be because of the following conclusion: Stereotypically, men want sex more than women, and men have more testosterone, so increasing this hormone must be the solution. It seems that there has been limited success with just testosterone, though. One promising study gave young women 0.5 mg of testosterone, administered under the tongue. Sublingual absorption of testosterone is very quick and researchers did see a rise in participants testosterone levels. Interestingly, the womens desire for sex increased after about 4 hours, instead of right away. Keep in mind that this was a small study and all medications need to be prescribed by a physician; this is not an advocacy of such treatment.

There are many ways to balance hormones and one of the best ways is to test current hormone levels. The best way to do this is with a saliva test. If you are a women experiencing a decreased desire for sex, consider whether hormone balancing may be right for you. Balancing your hormones can make your life better and make you feel great.

midst the images of chocolate, happy couples and romance that surround Valentines Day, it is easy to forget the importance of celebrating ones self. Whether you are single or in a relationship, your relationship with yourself sets the precedence for the quality of the relationships you have with others in your life, including creating the opportunity for romance and love for another. Have you ever heard the expression, You need to learn to love yourself before you can love another? Learn is the operative word. It is necessary to learn about yourself to truly understand and completely accept who you are. Understanding and acceptance are the precursors to love. Learning about ourselves is a lifelong process that involves adapting to constant change. From a bodyworkers perspective, the best way to learn about ones self is by developing an awareness of the changes that are constantly happening in ones own body. Many people remain unaware of the truth that the mind is connected to the body; all of our experiences and emotions, good
or bad, are stored within our bodys tissues. That headache, or that lower back pain, is likely tied to an event or experience that your mind and body held onto at an emotional level. The mind-body connection is a theme that comes up again and again in therapeutic bodywork. I am sometimes asked about the energetic and emotional changes Tui Na bodywork techniques elicit. From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, sedating or tonifying acupressure points on the body will certainly change the flow of qi energy through a meridian. The sensation a client feels while an acupressure point is worked alerts him or her to areas of the body where energy was stuck, deficient or in excess (learning). This, in turn, impacts how a person feels on energetic and emotional levels (change). The second component to this process is the transformation that takes place within the bodys tissues as they are worked. From my perspective, the amount of change that takes place within the tissues, and the pace at which it takes place, is

a function of: 1) the clients willingness to bring his or her attention to an area of dysfunction within the body (awareness); 2) the clients readiness to open to any emotions, memories or sensations that might be stored in that area (acceptance); and 3) the bodyworkers ability to tune into the clients processing of a sensation, stored memory or emotion, and create space for that change to occur. To a certain degree, a clients baseline awareness and understanding of his or her body will impact on how quickly and how easily he or she experiences the energetic and emotional changes brought about by Tui Na and acupressure during a therapeutic bodywork session. Some level of awareness, however, is critical to experiencing release and other corrective changes in the tissue, and to beginning the process of self-understanding. No matter where each of us falls on the path to developing greater self-understanding, engaging in regular therapeutic bodywork is a surefire way to lead us to self-awareness more quickly. Obtaining greater self-awareness will lead to greater self-understanding, acceptance and, ultimately, love. This Valentines Day, for a change, consider this idea a new starting point for understanding love.

ech toys topped last years hot Christmas gift list for many. From iPad minis to Surface tablets to Flips headphones to Martian G2G smartwatches, technology was and continues to be a big hit with a big price tag. While some gadgets are more about the fun factor, many are practical, too, saving you both time and money. Thats especially true in the area of financial institutions such as credit unions and banks, which offer great tools and technology to help you manage your money.
ensuring that your payments are made on time and saving you money on late fees while keeping your credit score in shape. You can also: Pay bills any time it works for you night or day. Save money on stamps. Save money on paper checks.
Direct deposit
Online banking
Though its been around for a while, even 10 years ago, online banking wasnt nearly as popular or as easy to use as it is today. You not only save the time and gas money it takes to drive to the credit union or bank, but you also can manage your account online in some (or all) of the following ways: View your accounts. Track your spending. Transfer funds. Make loan and/or credit card payments. Set up email and text alerts. Mobile banking. With mobile banking, you can do pretty much the same things as online banking, and a mobile app makes it even easier to use. Using your mobile phone makes it ultra-convenient, since you dont have to worry about a computer or Wi-Fi connection. You can simply do your banking any place you get a phone signal.
As long as your employer offers this service, with direct deposit you can skip the paper check and have your money automatically deposited into your account each pay period. Money is in the account so you dont have to spend time or gas to deposit a paper check. Its a great way to build up your savings account. What you dont see going in is money you wont be tempted to spend.
Auto pay
Most credit unions and banks offer this service as a convenient way to make loan or other payments. You can usually set up other automatic withdrawals and payments as well to pay bills such as the electric bill, cable bill or bills for other businesses where you make regular payments.
Bill pay
Online bill pay makes quick work of paying bills. Plus, you can usually schedule specific and recurring dates for paying bills,

Waiting for someone in the grocery line to write out a check is a rare find these days. According to a study by the Federal Reserve, as of December 2013, card payments, including debit and credit cards, comprised two-thirds of all noncash payments, while the number of check payments continued to decline. In fact, the convenience and time you save using a debit card instead of a paper check is considerable. The only word of caution would be to think of debit and credit card payments as cash spent,

and be sure to record those transactions in your check register in order to better keep track of your checking account balance. The use of technology in financial and banking circles will likely increase as we move into the future. With the New Year just beginning, its a perfect time to check with your credit union or bank to see what technology is available to help you save time and money and better manage your accounts.

he new year has arrived and many of us have hit the gym to try to get back on track after the holiday hustle and bustle. While most people think that the best way to burn off the holiday calories is to hit the elliptical trainer or bike for an hour, they are missing a very important component to weight loss, injury prevention and optimal health strength training. Strength training is often overlooked because many people believe that the fastest way to fat loss is cardiovascular exercise or because they are intimidated by the big weights in the weight room. Although cardiovascular exercise is great for heart health and burns calories while you are doing it, strength training will help you burn more calories throughout the entire day. A pound of muscle cells uses many more calories throughout the day than a pound of fat cells. By building lean muscle through strength training, you will burn more calories at rest, therefore increasing your resting metabolism. Strength training is great for preventing injuries. Many cardio

exercise lovers get in the trap of too much cardio and not enough strength training, which will put your body at greater risk of injury. Strength training helps build muscle, which supports bones, ligaments and tendons, and can protect from overuse injuries caused by repetitive motion. If you are not a regular runner, biker or swimmer, think about how strength training can help you in your daily activities such as mowing the lawn or shoveling the driveway. Strength training is great for bone health! Our bones stay strong through weight-bearing activities that cause stress to their structure. Activities like running and walking apply stress to the lower body but neglect the bones of the upper body. Adding in a total-body strength training program will ensure that all of your bones are being stressed in the right way, protecting against fractures as you get older. Strength training can be very intimidating at first because it is not as easy as just hopping on a stationary bike. If you look, you will find many resources to help you get started on a healthy and safe strength training regimen. Most health clubs and community centers offer strength training classes using a variety of different tools such as free weights and resistance bands. You can also consider hiring a personal trainer to build a customized program for your specific goals and to help ensure that you are performing the exercises properly.

edical professionals often warn that snack foods can be unhealthy, upsetting dieting plans and causing a person to consume more calories than is recommended. While a number of snack foods, particularly snacks that are laden with saturated fats, sodium and many calories, can be detrimental to your health, there are plenty of healthy snacks available to men and women who know where to look. Self magazine reports Americans consume 26 percent of their calories at times other than breakfast, lunch and dinner. Many fitness plans actually recommend regular snacking as part of a grazing mentality. Grazing, or eating several small meals per day rather than three large ones, can help keep metabolism primed and ready to burn calories. Grazing also enables a person to avoid overeating at any particular meal. But grazing on the wrong foods can be counterproductive. Thats why selecting the right snacks is important. Aim for snacks that are 100 calories or less. Hundred-calorie snacks can help fill you up and stave off hunger pangs. While there are plenty of prepackaged 100-calorie snacks available, you can easily make your own snack packs by being conscious of nutrition labels. Measure serving sizes of healthy foods into separate containers so youre less likely to eat more than is necessary. Fill up on fruits and vegetables. Produce can make a healthy snack because it is generally low in calories, which means portion sizes will be larger than other high-calorie foods. Many fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins and other nutrients, which are needed to keep a body healthy.
www.naturespathways.com
Many also make good sources of fiber, which can help you feel satiated longer between meals. Choose foods with healthy fats. Not all fats are bad. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats lower total cholesterol and bad cholesterol in the blood. Sources of good fats include nuts, olive oil, avocado, salmon, soy and sunflower oil. Skip foods that have high levels of saturated fats, which are mainly found in animal products. Trans fats are perhaps the worst fats to eat, as they are produced by hydrogenation to give them a longer shelf life. Avoid foods that contain hydrogenated oils. Opt for snacks that mimic the texture of unhealthy snacks. Sometimes you may crave something crunchy or a particular comfort food. Choose a crunchy whole grain cereal over potato chips. If you desire a cool, creamy treat, frozen yogurt has much fewer calories than ice cream. Pack on the lean protein. Lean sources of protein, such as slices of turkey, egg whites and soybeans, will fill you up and keep you feeling full longer than many carbohydrates. A snack of sushi can fill you up quickly. One piece of a California roll is just 30 calories and has less than a gram of fat. Keep healthy snacks handy. Always have a bag of healthy snacks handy in the event you get hungry. This way you avoid a trip through the drive-thru or a pit stop for a doughnut or another snack.

Celebrate Maggie-Gras
By Kathi Bloy
hen 6-year-old Maggie Lo Hendrick was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on Labor Day 2013, her aunt, Maggie Hendrick, went into action. Realizing that the family would need financial and emotional support in the months ahead, she began to think about putting together a fundraising event. When she sought advice about the details, including tax liabilities, her tax advisor suggested Community Benefit Tree (CBT). He knew people on the board of CBT and thought they would be our best shot, she said. I gave them a call and was amazed at the resources that were available. Pulling together extended family wasnt difficult. Everybody wanted to help. Were a bunch of people from different backgrounds that are connected for one reason: Maggie Lo, Maggie Hendrick said. None of us has done exactly this kind of event before. I think we could have done it without CBT, but it would have taken twice as long and been much more stressful. It would have been a massive headache and maybe there would have been more fights. Were all coming from different places. CBT has helped by providing training support, Maggie Hendrick continued. We dont have to worry about setting up a fund because they managed
that for us. They help us with the fundraising and well have a raffle license through them. Maggie Los mother, Becki Hendrick, said the diagnosis was a shock. Looking back, she said, Maggies not one to complain. In mid-July she started experiencing symptoms that were unexplained. She would have a fever or her stomach would really hurt or her back or legs hurt. The doctors would chalk it up to being constipated or having growing pains. They thought it was a virus. The Sunday night of Labor Day weekend she woke up in screaming pain and I took her to the ER, Becki Hendrick said. They did a blood test and sent us via ambulance to Childrens Hospital in Milwaukee. Thats where we actually found out she had leukemia. Her first week of treatment was at Childrens. Maggie Lo now receives chemo treatments at the pediatric oncology clinic at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay. Because she was at the standard risk for the leukemia returning and was responding well to treatment, we were able to do treatment in Green Bay so she could be at home, Becki Hendrick said. Shes gotten a lot of strength and energy back in the last few months. There is a 95-percent cure rate for this type of leukemia, so the prognosis looks good.

The Hendrick family, left to right, Alice (3), mom Becki, Maggie Lo (6), Gwen (9), dad John and Sam (1).
Meanwhile, life has changed for the whole family. John and Becki Hendrick, both teachers in Appleton, have taken intermittent leave under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), alternating two-month leaves to care for Maggie Lo. With three other children, Becki Hendrick said, I think its been hardest on our oldest, 9-year-old Gwen, because she is more aware of whats going on. She has become a lot more responsible and mature because shes had to do more things on her own. The Hendricks other children are Alice, 3, and their 1-year-old son, Sam. Even Alice sometimes has to do things on her own, Becki Hendrick said. She has become more responsible and independent and mature earlier than she would have naturally. One of the biggest challenges the family has faced is balancing letting Maggie Lo be a kid, play and have fun, and see friends and family with trying to keep her healthy. She has little to no immune system right now, especially when the treatments are more intense, Becki Hendrick said. I wish there was a dunk tank of sanitizer we could go in. But the schools where we teach have been really good about hand washing and hand sanitizing. The Maggie-Gras Celebration of Support will be held Saturday, March 22, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Tanners Grill and Bar in Kimberly. aint, palate and brushstroke; the movement of clay in hands; gentle music; a safe place; a trained clinician: These are components of art therapy, a powerful modality used in the effective treatment of eating disorders and other self-harming behaviors. What, exactly, is art therapy? Art therapy is a safe and accessible clinical tool that helps individuals replace unhealthy coping skills; identify and express feelings; learn to regulate impulsive, compulsive or perfectionistic behaviors; develop insight; and develop identity and/or social skills. In art therapy, art is broadly defined as the product of any creative process, including painting/drawing, sewing, tapestry, sculpture, use of nature, movement, drama-play and/or sound. The meaning of images or artwork created during the therapy process is held by the client and is not interpreted by the therapist. In fact, the creative process is emphasized not the final artwork.

There is no perfect image or right way to do the art. For these reasons, art therapy works powerfully even for individuals who solidly define themselves as nonartistic. Neurologically, art therapy works differently from traditional talk therapies. Consider this: How often are we split between what we think and what we feel? How often do we function well academically or professionally, but feel emotionally activated or immature? In contrast to traditional talk therapies, which are processed primarily in the outer, more logical areas of the brain, creativity fires in the lower and inner areas of the brain, including those linked to the central nervous system. This means that art therapy has both the ability to calm and the capacity to connect ones logic and emotions. How does art therapy work in the treatment of eating disorders? First, the creative process is demonstrated to reduce both heart and breath rates. This makes it a measurably effective coping skill to reduce anxiety or emotional intensity. Art is therefore useful in replacing disordered eating behaviors (such as restricting and purging), which typically evolve as coping skills used to numb or distract the individual from their feelings. Journaling, sewing, drawing and music-making are all have been found to have selfsoothing effects. Second, art therapy helps individuals learn to be present. Obsession with body image and diet are medicators that work as methods of distraction that bring the individual out of the present

moment and away from the emotional world. As music or imagery is created, the individual learns that he or she can be comfortable and safe in the moment and therefore more attuned to how he or she really feels. As unhealthy coping skills are replaced with healthy behaviors, the individual inevitably begins to connect more with their emotions. This is scary and uncomfortable when one has been in the practice of not feeling for any length of time. Art therapy has the tandem effect of de-activating the nervous system (calming) while also providing a vehicle for emotional expression. What color or textures are the feelings? What symbols or metaphors exist for the feelings, ideas or events? For individuals who use chronic medicating behaviors to distract from their emotions, art therapy becomes a language and a voice for feelings or events that are deeply buried and
unexpressed. Like any other self-harming or addictive behavior, disordered eating often evolves from underlying trauma or chronic stressors. Eating disorder patterns usually link back to early childhood events, including the death of a loved one, chronic stress or rivalry in the home, divorce, physical or sexual abuse, or other life-changing events. These are themes that are often too triggering or complex to be spoken at first, and are more easily voiced and explored through both art materials and visual images. In these ways, the creative process creates a gentle bridge to deeper therapeutic work. It also strongly supports other trauma-specific modalities, including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), Brainspotting, cranial sacral therapy, acupuncture and massage. Eating disorders are not about weight, they are about emotions. When a well-intended diet shifts into a distraction or obsession, the results can quickly become deadly. If you suspect that you or a loved one have an eating disorder, seek immediate help through online and community resources, a school counselor and/or a qualified counseling professional.

o you feel like youre running on empty? Just as your car or truck needs clean gas, clean oil, and a clean air filter to function properly, your body needs clean food. If you pour in the wrong kind of oil or gas thats loaded

engine completely fails? Will you drive to the first car doctor (rip-off mechanic) and get the latest prescription (car parts or diagnostics you dont need) and waste your money and your time, and ignore all common sense when it comes to proper maintenance? What ever happened to preventive maintenance? Its time to understand that your symptoms are simply your bodys way of telling you that youre running on empty and quite toxic. Clean food entails foods that are purely carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Not food-like substances that come from vending machines and drive-throughs. Here are five telltale signs that youve consumed some toxic food and your symptoms need more than just cover-up medicine; in fact, your body needs clean food starting today: 1. Inammation or edema: Are you retaining abnormal amounts of water? This could show up as weight gain. Do your hands and feet swell often? Are you consuming excessive animal protein, dairy or genetically modified wheat? What about refined sugars? Check the sodium levels in processed foods, especially ones you ate in the past six hours.

Nothing slows down a human body faster than trash food. If you eat nutrientvoid food, you will have no energy.
2. Lethargy or vertigo (dizziness):
Nothing slows down a human body faster than trash food. If you eat nutrient-void food, you will have no energy. If you are dizzy, this is usually an equilibrium issue in the inner ear, boiling right back to diet. Check your recent intake for MSG, aspartame, nitrates in meats and concentrated sweets. 3. Gut or bowel dysfunction: Not always, but most often gluten is mutant genetically modified organism (GMO) food glue and causes constipation. Gluten and artificial sweeteners can irritate your entire digestive tract and pollute your cleansing organs with synthetic toxins, which may never release. Your body lets you know right away when youve consumed these poisons. 4. Skin rashes, eczema or psoriasis: Check your concentrated sweets,
gluten and GMO pesticide-laden foods like corn and soy. Remember, the more processed food you eat, the more you break out with these skin conditions. Even typical medications like aspirin, cough syrup and ibuprofen can be overdone and cause headaches and rashes. 5. Headaches, migraines or brain fog: Did you just drink some unfiltered tap water (containing fluoride and bleach)? Did you just get a flu shot or a vaccine? Did you just eat something with aspartame in it? Did you just return from the dentist with a new mercury cavity filling? Did you just take some toxic pharmaceutical medication for anxiety, depression or ADHD? Your bodys immediate response (within six hours) to consuming something it does not want to process and cannot utilize for
nutrition is often a clear sign that if you continue to inflict the same damage to your system, eventually major system failure will occur. The biggest question is, Are you promoting disease or protecting yourself against it? If you are experiencing one or more of the five most popular categories of toxicity symptoms, there are simple fixes that begin right within your kitchen pantry and its time to dump the junk food. You also can get a personalized blood test to see which specific foods and ingredients are your personal poisons. Bottom line: In our busy environment, make sure youre not running on empty and take back your health!

our company should be concerned about the risk of environmental noncompliance in the IT recycling process. The earth wont be the only thing that suffers from an environmentally unsound IT recycling process. If your company doesnt recycle its used electronics according to all environmental regulations and best practices, it risks: Paying fines. Paying the cost of cleanup efforts. Endangering its image as an environmentally responsible company. Harming the health of its employees and the employees of its IT recycling partners.

If your company is like most companies, these are risks you would rather not take. But how avoidable are they? Ideally, you would like to avoid having your companys retired IT equipment shipped overseas illegally or abandoned in a warehouse somewhere. Reports like this are showing up with increasing frequency in the news, and the last thing you want is to have your companys name attached to any of them. But how can you know for sure what will happen to your IT assets once you hand them over to your recycling partner?
Some so-called IT recyclers offer a certificate of recycling as the only assurance their processes are environmentally compliant. What does that certificate represent? Think about how little effort it takes to generate one: just a computer, a printer and some time. That piece of paper is meaningless unless its backed up by something more substantial, like third-party industry certification for IT recycling.
www.naturespathways.com
Ideally, you would like to avoid having your companys retired IT equipment shipped overseas illegally or abandoned in a warehouse somewhere.
2. Ask for a tour
If your companys IT recycling partner has nothing to hide, it should have no problem letting you into its facilities and demonstrating its processes. If the vendor declines the tour, this should be a warning sign that it might not have U.S.-based facilities, or that it is aware its practices are not environmentally/health/safety compliant and it doesnt want your company to find out.
SATURDAYS
Your company is not the only organization that has struggled to verify the compliance of its IT recycling process. This is a common problem and in response to it, two certification bodies have emerged to help. Certification from e-Stewards, R2 or both shows that an electronics recycler has undergone a rigorous auditing process to ensure it follows the latest best practices for environmental standards and workplace health and safety, and that none of the material it processes will reach landfills or illegal overseas facilities. Neither certifications are easy to earn or maintain, so when a vendor has them, it shows the vendor takes environmental compliance very seriously and has spent the money and taken the time necessary to ensure standards are met on an ongoing basis.

ow loud is too loud? Some sounds are obviously too loud. We know this right away because these sounds hurt; we cover our ears and want to pull away. Other loud events, like music, are more difficult to judge. For example, a mother might say some of her sons music is too loud, mostly because she doesnt like it. But, if she is listening to music she likes, then loud might be just right! Any kind of music can be too loud, whether it is classical, rock n roll or punk. In fact, there are specific earplugs that
were designed originally for the Chicago Symphony for just this reason. If you are lucky and talented enough to be a professional musician, you may happen to spend hours of practice sitting in front of a trombone that is too loud. Most hearing protection makes everything sound funny. Musician earplugs keep the frequency response perfect, but turn everything down so musicians can practice and hear everything accurately, without damaging their hearing. A few decades ago, people listened to Walkmans. Walkmans could get loud, but were less likely to damage a persons
hearing because the batteries would die so quickly. Now, personal music listening occurs almost constantly and music can be listened to for hours and hours at a time. Hearing loss from noise is affected by two things: how loud the sound is and how long you listen to it. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulates safety in the workplace. OSHA regulations indicate that you can listen to a sound at 90 dB for eight hours without damage, but 95 dB is allowed for only four hours. For a reference point, normal conversation is 60 to 65 dB. household appliances, such as blow dryers, kitchen blenders and food processors, can range from 80 to 90 dB, while lawn mowers are commonly about 106 dB. To shield themselves from harmfully loud external sounds, many people can benefit from wearing inexpensive earplugs or earmuffs that can be purchased from a local hardware store. For children, earmuffs are often better because it is easy to see if they are on correctly. Commonly used yellow cotton earplugs can be inserted incorrectly quite easily and as a result, their benefit is not received. Custom earplugs are another available option. For those with small or differently
shaped ear canals, custom molds are an excellent alternative option. Many people find these custom-made products more comfortable, since they are crafted to fit their ears exactly and can be designed to accommodate the particular situation the user requires them for (hunting, motorcycle riding, listening to music, etc.). Consulting with your local audiologist is the best way to ensure a proper earplug fit. After looking in the ear canal, the audiologist will place a small cotton block into the canal. Next, impression material is gently placed on top of this. After the material dries (approximately one to two minutes), the impression is sent to a specialized lab where a manufacturer will make the desired type of ear protection. Ear plugs come in a variety of colors and designs and take two to three weeks from the time the impression is taken until they arrive back at the audiologists office for pickup. At that time, the audiologist will review proper use and care of the earplugs and you can be on their way within 15 minutes. Different ear protection is selected based on what the person needs it for. For example, if you are trying to wear earplugs under a motorcycle helmet, you will desire small plugs for comfort. These plugs also
are comfortable for sleeping. If you want musician plugs or custom earplug monitors (for listening to music), that type of plug can be ordered. Determining how loud is too loud is based on several factors, but chances are, if you are wondering about it, then the noise you are listening to is too loud and you will want to know your options for protecting your hearing.

t is often during times of extreme devastation when children first see how communities can join together to help one another. Such efforts may be a childs initial exposure to charity while highlighting the importance of putting another persons needs before your own. But children need not be exposed to charity solely during times of tragedy. Teaching children to be charitable is one of the ways to help them become good citizens of the world. By helping others, parents can instill early on lessons of kindness, empathy and compassion into their sons and daughters. Children who are ready and willing to lend a helping hand may grow up to be more appreciative of what they have in their own lives. Whats more, they may learn to be selfless while assigning less value to material things. Youngsters who repeatedly see their own parents and other role models doing good and lending a helping hand may be more inclined to repeat that behavior, and giving will be the norm for them rather than the exception. To mold charitable children, families can employ the following techniques. Start locally. There are people right in your own community or on the street where you live who can benefit from a helping hand. Ask an elderly neighbor if he or she needs assistance with shopping for groceries or could benefit from your child taking

in the garbage cans after pickup. Children can help shovel snow from sidewalks or do other age-appropriate tasks, such as place a carelessly strewn newspaper closer to a neighbors door. Volunteer as a family. The entire family can get together and spend time working at a community-sponsored carnival or cleaning debris from an area beach. Volunteer work may be available at your childs school, where families can plant gardens around the property. When volunteering as a family, not only is your entire family helping to do good, but youre spending quality time together as well. Make charitable donations. Let children see the solicitations for monetary donations that come in the mail. Read aloud the pleas for funds to help children and adults who may not have enough to eat or who may require medical care. This is an important lesson in humility and helps show children that not every person in the world is comfortable. Once kids have read about the needs of others, involve them in the donation process. They can assist with sorting clothing and toys they may no longer need and then help bag it up and donate it to an agency that takes collected items. Give throughout the year. Charity need not be limited to the holiday season. Inform children that many people need throughout the year, and that volunteering is a year-round activity. Match kids charitable fundraising. Encourage children to start their own fundraising efforts and match the funds they raise. Find companies that will also match the amount your children have raised. Set up a giving policy. Children can learn the importance of giving at an early age by dividing their allowances and financial gifts into different categories. They can put one-third toward savings, one-third toward spending and one-third toward donations. If children do not have a lot of money in a piggy bank, they can donate their time, which many charities need as much as money.

it comes to health clubs, Lake Part Swim & Fitness (LPSF) easily exemplifies multiple meanings of the term heart. With February being The Centers for Disease Controls American Heart Month, personal fitness and overall health are the focus of the programs LPSF offers. This month, small group training takes center stage. With only eight to 10 people per group, it offers many advantages. While the group sessions are still coached fitness, conducted by a personal trainer, they make training sessions more affordable while retaining personal qualities. Were offering a program this month with up to 10 people training as a group twice weekly with a trainer, and this includes nutrition and weight loss elements, said Jane Dias, co-owner/manager of LPSF with colleagues Felicia Christianson and Megan Collins. By combining the team support of small group training with some nutrition classes, we are focused on helping members get results whether thats a shrinking number on the scale, dropping a few pants sizes or simply making better food choices for a healthier lifestyle. Everything we do every single day is helping people to have healthier hearts.
hen
Strength in numbers
The social aspect of the small group training sessions is just as important as the training itself. The advantages are camaraderie, obviously, and the coaching of a certified personal trainer, plus holding each other accountable because youre a team working together, Dias said. And you get to know people, so youre making friends, like the buddy system. Since the trainer will make the group try new exercises and safely push them outside their comfort zones, the emotional support of a team setting helps to keep the I cant attitude to a minimum. Plus the more the merrier group training is fun! Additionally, because Dias, Christianson and Collins feel so strongly about the importance of personal training on overall health, they are now making training available to non-members as well. Theyre not alone in their thinking. Jennifer MacAdam-Miller of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reinforces their point on the effectiveness of this kind of training: The buddy system may be the answer for those whose idealism doesnt match their ability to persevere. Experts say that weight-loss and exercise partners provide a combination of competition, accountability and support that almost ensures success. MacAdam-Miller further emphasized the importance and success of the buddy system with research: In a recent study of married couples who joined health clubs together, Jack Raglin, an associate professor of kinesiology at Indiana University, found that couples who worked out separately had a 50 percent dropout rate after a year; whereas couples who went to the gym together,
regardless of whether they focused on the same type of exercise, had only a 10 percent dropout rate.
Comfort zone
Another aspect of heart at LPSF is evident in the social environment that goes along with the training. It not only draws people to Lake Part Swim & Fitness, it keeps them coming back again and again. The hardest part for most people is simply walking through the front door to join a health club, Christianson said about prospective members. The number one thing we tell people is to find a place where you feel comfortable. We encourage people that it doesnt have to be an overwhelming process. Come on in. Were going to hold your hand through this process. The heart of LPSF is also found in every staff members personal desire to help their members feel comfortable in a fitness environment as well as with the personal training. We dont want people to feel alone, Collins said. Its what makes a club setting ideal. Its what makes small group training or personal training a results-driven experience. And its why our group exercise classes all 80 weekly included in membership are so popular!
Of course, much of what LPSF focuses on is keeping members healthy and out of the hospital. Part of that involves promoting heart health awareness. Collins explained there are numerous things people can do for their cardiovascular health, which follow the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). According to the CDC website: Heart disease is a major problem. Every year, about 715,000 Americans have a heart attack. About 600,000 people die from heart disease in the United States each year thats 1 out of every 4 deaths. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. The CDC recommends the following preventative measures: Eating a healthy diet. Maintaining a healthy weight. Exercising regularly. Monitoring your blood pressure. Dont smoke. Limit alcohol use. Have your cholesterol checked. Manage your diabetes. Take your medications. Talk with your healthcare provider.

In an effort to accommodate both younger and older generations, Lake Park Swim & Fitness tailors its schedule to suit the availability of members. With over 80 group exercises to choose from weekly, they make classes available to all ages and all abilities. In this way, LPSF is keeping up with the times. Jeanne Faulkners article on QualityHealth.com reinforced the idea that many fitness centers like LPSF are developing age-appropriate programs for all demographics: Check in with most gyms today and youll find age appropriate exercise classes designed specifically for seniors and children, but also a wider variety of classes targeting adults in their 20s through 50s. Rock climbing and cardio-boxing are designed to appeal to the 20- and 30-somethings (though all ages are welcome) while Zumba seems to appeal more to 30- and 40-something women. Silver Sneakers classes are customized for the over-60 and specifically focused on flexibility, balance, and strength training along with aerobics. While the age groups at the club may vary, members are brought together by the sense of community that LPSF enjoys. We are truly a community between our members and our staff. We have coffee together in the lounges, Dias said. We have groups of members that do holiday parties outside of the club. They celebrate milestones, birthdays inside the club. The care and concern for those who are hospitalized or who have passed away is amazing.
The dierence
Every club has equipment, every club has trainers. LPSF has what some other clubs dont have: community support and a non-intimidating environment. They also have a really big swimming pool. We do offer a 25-yard lap/junior Olympic sized pool, Christianson said. Its ideal for the elite athlete, for anyone rehabbing an injury, or for the older adult who simply wants to walk in the water. These perks, along with free towels and coffee, locker room amenities, and over 80 classes to choose from weekly, make LPSF really stand out from the fitness center crowd. But the biggest difference, what really sets them apart from other clubs, is just how much the staff cares about the members. It starts with the owners. The heart of Lake Park Swim & Fitness is our desire, goal, mission of taking care of our members, Dias said. Knowing their names and their situations, supporting them in their times of needs, celebrating their times of successes; simply knowing them and being with them on their entire journey both inside and also outside the club. If you think youd like that kind of support on your journey, stop by Lake Park Swim & Fitness today. Check out the facilities and talk to the members and staff. Youre sure to find that the community there will take your fitness goals to heart.

Set goals
Goal setting is not as easy as you think. This is the hardest thing to do. Think about it: When we set our goals, they are huge. We think they can be done quickly and should be obtainable because we set them. Did you ever think of what actually goes into the process? Set yourself up for success, not for failure. Be prepared to ask yourself questions of how you are going to reach your goal. With every question, another question should follow. What do you want to do this year? Plan three months out. Goals are obtainable and take planning. They do not have to be huge. If we set them too high we defeat ourselves. Take pride in your small goals; with each step you will move closer to your main goal.
again. When you are not afraid to fail and try again, then you are committed to making it happen. Be proud of yourself when you pick yourself up and try again. Smile and say, Ive got this.
Focus
Commit
This isnt an easy thing to do. We fear commitment because we dont want to fail. Commitment is simply trying something new and sticking with it. It isnt the inability to slip up and not try again. Its the knowing you will fall off track a little and that it is OK to try
Take the time to focus on the little things that you will need to commit to in order to reach your goal. Do not focus on the main outcome or every little aspect at once. You will only overload yourself and steer away from your goal. Rather, focus on one thing per week or for two weeks. Your goal is not completed with one large leap. Instead, your goal is reached through many baby hops, and that is when you become successful.

Saying no
By Carrissa Pannuzzo
or many people, no is one of the most difficult words in the English language. This can be for many reasons, including a desire to avoid disappointment, feeling unworthy or confusion regarding healthy personal and relational boundaries. But once learned, the skill of saying no can be one of the healthiest and most liberating abilities one can possess. In fact, no should really be a word that comes naturally to us all. Saying no allows us to set healthy boundaries with ourselves and others. It communicates what we are capable of, what we are comfortable with and what we are responsible for, and establishes a fence around our personal integrity. Saying no can certainly be difficult, specifically for people pleasers, those who are shy or more passive, and those who are not especially skilled in social settings. And, it can be even harder to say no to people who do not respect others boundaries. These people will push and take until the other person is dry. They may even get angry when someone tries to say no. Here are some ways to deal with these takers and exercise your right to say no: 1. Decide where you stand on the issue or request. If you are not sure, let the person know you will think about it and get back to them when you have made a decision. 2. Give a short response. Do not feel the need to give a long explanation as to why the answer is no. The other person may try to talk you out of your decision if you go on for too long. 3. Specifically say no. This adds strength and removes uncertainty from your answer. 4. You may have to say no several times before the person realizes you really do mean no. Just repeat your original response until they get it. 5. If the other person keeps pushing, use silence or change the topic. You do not need to continue on the subject. 6. You can acknowledge the other persons disappointment; however, be sure not to say, Im sorry. You do not need to apologize because you have a right to say no. 7. Do not feel guilty. It is not your responsibility to solve anothers problems or make them happy.

partially. If you can only help out for a couple hours instead of all day, offer this option instead. 9. You are allowed to change your mind. A previous yes can become a no. The more you practice saying no, the easier it gets. Not everyone will be happy with your new boundaries but they will get used to them and begin to respect you all the more. For more on establishing healthy boundaries, see Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsends books, Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No, to Take Control of Your Life, Boundaries in Marriage: Understanding the Choices That Make or Break Loving Relationships, Boundaries in Dating: How Healthy Choices Grow Healthy Relationships, and Boundaries with Kids: How Healthy Choices Grow Healthy Children.

very four years, thousands of the best athletes in the world represent their countries in the hopes of bringing home a gold medal from the Winter Olympic Games. This years Olympics in Sochi promise to deliver some of the most incredible feats on snow and ice. While these physically gifted and extremely well-trained competitors will make many of their maneuvers on the ice and snow and in the air look easy, theyre not easily replicated. For those who are inspired by the Winter Olympics and want to channel their inner Olympic athlete, its best to strengthen your core first. Here are five simple exercises I recommend to my patients who are looking to decrease back pain or want to become more physically active:
Kneeling extension
Start on all fours with your hands directly below your shoulders and your knees directly below your hips. Tighten your core muscles while slowly lifting your right arm and left leg until both are fully extended. Hold for 10 seconds and slowly return to the starting position. Alternate for three times on each side.
Hip lifts
Lie on your back with your knees bent off the ground and your arms flat on the ground on either side. Rotate your pelvis and tailbone downward, tightening your core muscles as you push your lower back into the floor. Slowly lift your midsection off the ground while maintaining this position, using your legs, arms and shoulders to balance. Hold for 10 seconds and slowly lower into the starting position. Repeat five times.
With your back on the ground, rest your lower legs comfortably on a chair. Place your fingers behind your head and lift your chin to the ceiling, tightening your abdominal muscles and using them

so your spine remains aligned. Hold for 10 seconds, then slowly return to the starting position and alternate sides three times each. You might not win the gold, but these exercises can help strengthen your core and prepare you for an outdoor sports season of fun this February. Should you experience persistent back or muscle pain, a consultation with a family physician or a pain management specialist is recommended.

Referrals are welcome, but not necessary. Most insurance accepted.
Plank hold
While lying face down on the ground, tuck your toes into the ground and place your elbows on the ground on either side of your body. Keep your stomach muscles tight and slowly raise your body off the ground and hold in an elevated position with your bottom lifted as high as your shoulders to avoid strain on your lower back. Hold for 10 seconds and slowly lower to the starting position. Repeat five times.
Start in the same position as the plank hold. Rotate to one side, placing weight on your left arm and foot, while keeping your right arm at your side. Keep your hips from sinking to the ground by holding your abdominal muscles tight and elevating your hips

inter weather produces more than just colder temperatures and snow-covered landscapes. The longer hours of darkness synonymous with winter can promote feelings of lethargy and fatigue. People who leave the house in the early morning darkness, only to return home when the sun has set, often find themselves feeling tired. But changing your diet to include foods that provide energy may be just what you need to counter such fatigue. Energy levels are often affected by what we eat. If you choose foods that result in a mid-afternoon slump, it could be time to make some changes. The key is to select menu items that will provide a gradual stream of energy through the day, eliminating those highs and lows that can lead to dips in energy. Here are some smart food choices to fight fatigue: OATMEAL: This fiber-rich food provides a quick boost of energy from carbohydrates, but will not result in a sugar crash that is common with many breakfast cereals. The fiber in oatmeal will feed the beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract, helping to keep the digestion system healthy. This means you can easily absorb the nutrients in oatmeal and avoid constipation. PUMPKIN SEEDS: Researchers at the United States Agricultural Research Service found that people with magnesium deficiencies required more oxygen uptake during physical activity, which then brought on fatigue. Snacking on magnesium-rich foods, such as pumpkin seeds, will provide the body with the recommended daily allowance of magnesium. Aim for 310 mg of magnesium for women and 400 mg for men. LEAN PROTEINS: When enjoying proteins, opt for leaner meats and seafood that can be quickly digested by the body. Red meats marbled in fat require more energy to digest. YOGURT: The soft texture of yogurt makes it easily digestible by the body, providing a quick source of energy. But unlike other foods, yogurt has a good ratio of protein to carbohydrates, making it a long-lasting energy source. Yogurt also
54
Natures Pathways | February 2014
contains a bevy of healthy probiotics that promote healthy bacteria in the digestive tract while eliminating harmful bacteria. Recent research from the University of Toronto suggests that probiotics can help ease symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, among other conditions. This makes yogurt a good meal or snack to enjoy any time of the day. WHOLE GRAINS: When choosing carbohydrates, opt for complex carbohydrates, which can be found in whole grains, instead of refined carbs. The body digests and releases complex carbohydrates slowly, moderating blood sugar levels and keeping your mood stable. This helps the body maintain adequate energy levels. SPINACH: Fatigue may be a byproduct of an iron deficiency, which is a common cause of anemia. Red blood cells use iron to carry oxygen to cells. Without adequate iron, the red blood cells cannot do their job well, and mental and physical fatigue may ensue. Spinach is an excellent source of iron, magnesium and vitamin C. WALNUTS: Walnuts and other foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids can alleviate symptoms of fatigue. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that alphalinolenic acid found in walnuts can boost energy and relieve depression symptoms. DARK CHOCOLATE: Every once in a while, you may crave something a little sweet for a pick-me-up. But rather than selecting just any candy bar or snack, opt for something smart. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants and polyphenols. The chocolate helps boost the brain chemical serotonin, which can alleviate feelings of fatigue. Winter doldrums do not have to get you down. Selecting an array of healthy foods that provide maximum energy and mood-boosting properties can help to banish fatigue.

ts not that often that I treat myself. A few months ago, the thought of having a facial would have sounded to me like something only decadent society women do. But when a friend came to me raving about Rejuvenessence mediSpa after having had a facial treatment there herself, I suddenly found myself flirting with the idea: Is this something that I can do, too? My friend seemed to sense my hesitation and, being a good friend, she pushed me a little bit. You have to go! she said. Im glad I listened to her. A few days later, I gave Rejuvenessence a call. When making my appointment, I said I wanted a facial. Little did I know how many treatment choices there were! I discovered that those interested in facial and skincare treatments can choose anything from simple massages up to medical skincare treatments with their dermatologist and medical director. As I was pretty new to this sort of thing, I really didnt know where to start. However, Heather made my choice easy. She recommended a microdermabrasion facial, explaining that their unique Dermasweep skin resurfacing system makes Rejuvenessences version of this wellknown facial a one-of-a-kind. It sounded good to me. When I arrived for my appointment, Heather led me to a cozy room with a massage table. She invited me to get comfortable. I climbed onto the table and soon found that getting comfortable wouldnt be hard to do. The table was heated, and the molded shape conformed perfectly to the contours of my body. The blankets were soft and warm, and light clouds of steam misted my face. I felt so relaxed that, before I knew it, I was asleep. I awoke to Heathers return. She began explaining to me the process that I was about
56

to undergo, microdermabrasion, which involves removing the top layer of dead skin cells from your face to reveal the smooth, fresh-looking skin beneath. I told her I was ready, and she then began cleaning my skin with a Clarisonic brush, an electronic skin brush that looks a little like a small hairdryer. When she was through, Heather then massaged a refreshing cleanser into my face. The cleanser seemed to open up my sinuses and left me feeling even more relaxed. From there, I was escorted to the microdermabrasion machine. I was a little uncertain about what to expect, but Heather assured me that the treatment was totally pain-free. In fact, she informed me that it should feel good. She began running the machine over my skin, and it felt like a tiny vacuum running along my face and neck. When she touched my face afterwards, I could immediately feel the difference: My skin felt softer and fresher. Part of my treatment at Rejuvenessence involved a skin analysis, and after my microdermabrasion treatment, Heather applied a mask that she had chosen based on the results of this analysis. She applied the mask, and then proceeded to massage my shoulders, a welcome favor in just about any situation. As I melted under her touch, I wondered how Id ever gone without this kind of pampering before. But it just kept getting better. After Heather removed the mask, she applied a moisturizing skin and face cream. As this set in, I was treated to another massage this time it was to my arms and hands. When this was over, I felt like warm jelly. Heather offered me a glass of water, and the cool sensation brought me back down to earth. I looked in the mirror and what I saw delighted me: a fresh, young, healthy glow. I looked like a new person.
In the reception area, I thanked Heather for her work and asked about other services offered at Rejuvenessence. It had only taken one trip before I was hooked. She was eager to tell me about Microcurrent therapy, a painless electronic skin treatment system that is new to the area. She described it as a workout for your face. She explained how regular treatments leave the skin looking younger and firmer. I signed up right away. Its funny to me now when I think back to how, just a few months ago, my friend was coaxing me into a trip to Rejuvenessence. Now Im the one coaxing my friends. If youre looking for ways to make your skin look healthier and younger, or you just feel like pampering yourself with a relaxing facial or massage, give Rejuvenessence mediSpa a call. They have everything your skin could want, from simple creams and massages to advanced esthetic dermatological care and procedures. And youll come away feeling like a younger, fresher you. Go ahead and treat yourself! I think youll find youre worth it.

very Valentines Day, homes and businesses dress up their decor with cupids and hearts to celebrate a day all about love and affection. The heart shape has been used to symbolically represent the human heart as the center of emotion and romantic love. Hearts symbolizing love can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Those familiar with human anatomy realize that an actual heart bares very little resemblance to the ideographic heart shape used in art and imagery. Similarly, the human heart really has nothing to do with human emotions. Despite this, there are many interesting components of the heart, and a man or woman truly cannot love or live without one. The heart as an organ is relatively small in size. It is roughly the size of a fist and weighs only 11 ounces on average. Although diminutive, the heart is responsible for pumping 2,000 gallons of blood through 60,000 miles of blood vessels each day. It accomplishes this by beating 72 times a minute in a healthy adult. All of the cells in the body receive blood except for the corneas in the eye. The heart works harder than any other muscle in the body. In a fetus, it begins beating at four weeks after conception and will not stop until a persons time of death. Even then, sometimes the heart can be revived. A heart can also continue to beat outside of the body provided it has an adequate oxygen supply. Although many people refer to all of the blood vessels in their body as veins, theyre actually a combination of veins and arteries. Veins carry fresh, oxygenated blood to the body through arteries. The main artery leaving the left heart ventricle is called the aorta, while the main artery leaving the right ventricle is known as the pulmonary artery. Blood traveling back to the heart flows through veins after it has passed the lungs to pick up oxygen. The thumping noise that is heard while the heart is beating is actually
www.naturespathways.com
the chambers of the heart closing and opening as blood flows through. While the heart may not be the cornerstone of emotions, it can be affected by feelings. Studies have shown that a broken heart is a real occurrence, according to Live Science. Bad news or a breakup with a loved one can put a person at increased risk for heart attack. This type of trauma releases stress hormones into the body that can stun the heart. Chest pain and shortness of breath ensue but can be remedied after some rest. Conversely, laughter and positive feelings can be beneficial for the heart. Research has shown that a good laughing fit can cause the lining of the blood vessel walls called the endothelium to relax. This helps increase blood flow for up to 45 minutes afterward. Although having a big heart colloquially means that a person is loving and goes out of their way for others, physically speaking, a big heart is unhealthy. An enlarged heart can be a sign of heart disease and compromise the hearts ability to pump blood effectively. Left untreated, it can lead to heart failure. There is good reason to get amorous with a loved one on Valentines Day or other times during the month. Being intimate can provide a physical workout, in some instances doubling a persons heart rate and burning up to 200 calories. Thats the equivalent of a brisk 15-minute run. Also, a study of 2,500 men aged 49 to 54 found having an orgasm at least three times a week can cut the likelihood of death from coronary disease in half, according to The New England Journal of Medicine. The heart is an amazing organ responsible for sustaining life. Although it is not directly tied to love and emotions, without the heart such feelings wouldnt be possible.

sphalt shingles are the most common type of roofing material used in new homes and roof replacements. Approximately 22 billion pounds or 11 million tons of asphalt shingle waste is generated in the United States each year. Either way you look at it, thats a lot of shingles, and unfortunately the majority of those shingles are landfilled. Fortunately, a growing resource recovery effort has provided Wisconsin homeowners and contractors shingle recycling options. The largest recycling market for waste asphalt shingles is hot mix asphalt. Hot mix asphalt, often called blacktop, is the most commonly used flexible pavement in the United States. Blacktops impermeability allows water to run away from its surface area, and the pavement performs well in a variety of traffic conditions. Asphalt shingles are used in two ways in blacktop production: as a binder and as an aggregate. Research has shown that blacktop made with asphalt shingles has a number of benefits, including the reduced use of virgin aggregate, lower production costs and improved resistance to pavement cracking and rutting due to the reinforcement provided by shingle fibers. Recycled asphalt shingles also are used in cold asphalt or cold patch. As the name implies, cold asphalt is a non-heated material made of asphalt, aggregate and a solvent. Cold patch is commonly used in road repair and pothole work. It can be applied without heavy rolling machines. Workers simply shovel or pour the material onto the road surface and compress it by hand. The benefits of using recycled shingle cold patch include potential economic savings due to longer life, decreased maintenance costs and improved pavement performance, all due to the fibers recovered from recycled shingles. Another use for recycled asphalt shingles is as an aggregate in road construction. For this application, shingles are ground and screened to a certain size and mixed with gravel. Unpaved, rural roads may be covered using this material. When shingles are added, the resulting aggregate produces roads with less dust, less vehicle noise, less required maintenance and demonstrated longer life. Finally, another logical utilization of recycled asphalt shingles is in new roofing shingle production. Attempts have been made by certain manufacturers to incorporate recycled asphalt shingles into new

roofing materials. However, some manufacturers noted difficulty in meeting product specifications when using recycled asphalt shingles. While it goes without saying that another benefit of shingle recycling is saving landfill space, given the number of end uses for recycled asphalt shingles, landfilling them really is a waste of a valuable resource. According to Earth911, the shingle roof on an average American home can supply enough asphalt to pave 200 feet of a two-lane highway! The next time you need to reroof your home, ask your contractor to recycle the shingles. If you are a do-it-yourselfer, rent a dumpster from a company which offers shingle recycling. To ensure your shingles can be recycled, sort out cedar shake wood, miscellaneous construction materials and trash. About 4.5 percent of waste entering landfills comes from roofing material. Help reduce that percentage by recycling asphalt shingles on your next roof replacement.

ver the last two months, I wrote articles discussing trigger points what they are, how they occur and what effect they have on the body. A method of treatment to address trigger points that has been discussed is the application of dry needling. Nearly all individuals who have musculoskeletal aches and pains, whether acute (less than three months in duration) or chronic (greater than three months in
duration), may be candidates to have trigger points addressed with the dry needling technique. Of note, patients with significant needle phobia or significant anxiety would unlikely achieve therapeutic improvement using this technique. Precautions should be taken with patients in the first trimester of pregnancy, local lymphedema, metal allergies, cosmetic implants and local or systemic infections. a candidate for dry needling or if another technique would be more advantageous. Following is a letter from a patient who had received the dry needling technique as a part of her successful treatment: After 40 years of athletic wear and tear (and more than eight surgeries), my body was more than tired. It was screaming enough! Perhaps it was my fault; with each injury I would find some way to press on and enjoy life as I saw fit. By the time I hit my mid-40s, I needed to be seen by my physical therapist and a massage therapist almost weekly. I had overused and punished many of the healthier muscles in my body trying to compensate for my earlier injuries. When I finally sought help for a knee that had been bone on bone for the better part of 25 years, I was giving the surgeons a much altered limb, one that was drastically different than the strong, athletically toned leg of my college years. Likewise, the therapists were dealing with a leg, calf and spine that had, through adaptation, not been through a full range of motion in five or six years. And yet, my spirit and my will to work and regain my life had not diminished. My knee rehabilitation following a total knee replacement, as hard as I worked, found my progress stopped at a mere 90 degrees of bend. Years of limited motion and scarring led me to believe that my new knee, and the limited range, was all I was going to get until a physical therapist used a dry

needling technique to help address areas of tissue tightness and limited mobility that I had come to accept as my new norm. Immediately after the dry needling procedure, I gained 8 degrees of flexibility 8 degrees of motion that I could now use to further rehab my leg! I felt as if I have been given the opportunity to unlock my body and once again pursue the life I was meant to live! I have lived with so many injuries that my chief sin over the years has been that of ignoring the signals given to me by my body. Without the trained eye of a skilled practitioner, the chain of imbalanced movements would remain a mystery for me. My awareness with respect to my body has increased enough so I now know when to ask for help. I also have become aware of my responsibilities with regards to my own health. That being said, it is not uncommon for me to just feel stuck. I was in this mode not long after my

Locked and tight muscles were immediately set free! Scars were loosened, muscles relaxed and movement regained all after short and welldirected needling sessions. As I have noted in previous articles, it is the goal of a skilled practitioner to evaluate the whole body to determine areas of restriction and to assess for areas of asymmetry, range of motion loss and tissue texture abnormality. It is the role of the skilled practitioner to use the tools in his or her toolbox to abolish those identified restrictions and return the musculoskeletal system to optimal health.

February zzle
By Dulcie Bosi-Schmidt

here is a saying among gym professionals this time of year: Things will be back to normal come February. This of course is referring to the influx of well-intentioned New Years resolution-ers who hit the gyms every January. If you are finding yourself among those who are no longer attending the gym regularly (or as often as you vowed you would), you are not alone and all hope is not lost! This does not mean you cannot or will not achieve your goals and dreams. It just means that all your dreams may not come true in a gym. Its OK because there are other ways to achieve better health and wellness! First of all, way to go for having good intentions when it comes to your well-being! Not everyone does, so you are headed in the right direction. Secondly, kudos for trying something new in order to achieve a different outcome. For various reasons, this resolution wasnt quite right for you. However, youve learned a valuable lesson this resolution wasnt quite right for you. Now its time to try something new! You may be thinking that you have tried everything already. This would be true if youve tried wellness coaching. Coaching is the last resolution youll try before you do, do, do. Wellness coaching lets you be you and do whatever it is you really want to do

Dietary ber
By Grandma Rose (Rosalie Misco)
ietary fiber is a carbohydrate that is very important for your health. Yes, fiber is a carbohydrate! The human body makes the enzymes needed to digest carbohydrates. Some carbohydrates the body cannot digest are called fiber. There are four types of fiber. They include: 1. Soluble fiber, the gelatin-like fiber that absorbs water. It is found in dry beans, and in some fruits and grains, like barley. 2. Insoluble fiber, which includes wheat bran, oat bran, apple peelings and other fruit and vegetable peelings. 3. Resistant starch fiber. This is found in unground whole grains like rye, barley, wheat, corn, slightly green bananas and cold potatoes. Grinding the grains reduces the resistant starch fiber. 4. Cellulose, which is found in most plants, including wood. It is the most abundant form of fiber on the earth. The human body cannot use cellulose in any way. It is often used by food processors as filler. Cellulose is not harmful to the human body, however when used as a filler, it replaces some of the nutrients, making the food to which it is added less nutritious. Because cellulose is so abundant, it is cheap and makes food to which it is added less expensive to produce.
Most of us do not consume enough ber in our diets. Thirty-ve to 50 grams of ber a day is ideal.
Soluble, insoluble and resistant starch fibers lower cholesterol, do not cause weight gain or raise blood sugar, prevent hunger, assist digestion, help elimination and prevent colon cancer. Resistant starch fiber added to foods actually helps with blood sugar and weight control. Diets high enough in fiber, which is found abundantly in whole unprocessed foods, are indeed very healthy. Most of us do not consume enough fiber in our diets. Thirty-five to 50 grams of fiber a day is ideal. Start slowly when increasing fiber in your diet. The body soon gets used to the higher fiber diet. If you feel discomfort from adding fiber, that is a sure sign your diet was too low in fiber. Grandma Rose, owner of Natural Expressions 100% Whole Grain Bakery, is an expert on fiber and carries high-fiber foods like whole barley, whole rye berries, oat bran, ground flax seed and resistant starch fiber. She can help you learn to use whole foods that are naturally high in fiber to lower blood sugar and lose weight. Her classes can be found at www.naturalexpressions1.com.

s a clinical psychologist and pole dance instructor, I appreciate ways that my worlds collide. Experience shows that pole exercise is a profound coping mechanism. This months article presents an opportunity to discuss building resilience in women who have endured trauma. The consequences of trauma can be devastating and often the method to effectively deal with the resulting emotional pain can be unclear.

To understand how pole dancing can serve as a coping strategy for women, first we must understand what trauma is and its effects. Trauma refers to the deep emotional pain caused by physical, sexual and mental abuse. Once trauma has occurred, there is a domino effect of negative consequences. Without adapting effective coping strategies, these consequences become symptoms that can persist for years. The symptoms of trauma can include feelings of guilt, loss of control, difficulty trusting others, anger, low self-worth, destructive coping strategies, and sometimes depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. Women who have been traumatized often develop false beliefs about themselves. They buy into the belief that they are to blame for what has happened, unworthy of being treated with respect and unable to achieve happiness. They struggle to find significance and see the world as a harsh and unfair place. Pole dancing offers a way to discover that they are responsible for developing a sense of purpose and satisfaction. Pole exercising is empowering. With statistics reporting that 1 in 6 women have experienced an attempted or completed sexual assault, and 1 in 4 have been exposed to domestic violence, the likelihood of trauma is greater than most
people realize. One of our aerial dance students shared her story: After I was sexually assaulted, I felt totally lost. I thought people wouldnt believe me. I was afraid to make real friends or date anyone nice. I settled for bad guys. I felt guilty and I began to see myself as damaged. I would never have experiences like normal people, and I didnt deserve to be happy. Good things were not in the cards for me. I was miserable. I was angry at the world, and everything made me cry. I was totally overwhelmed and alone. Sometimes the only way to get relief was to numb the pain with alcohol. I spent 15 years like this, until one day I was finally ready to ask for help. I stumbled upon pole dancing and I was amazed by dancers strength and grace. I signed up for classes and it completely transformed me. It was challenging, yet fun. I didnt know how strong I was. Climbing to the top of the pole and hanging upside down was movement I envied, but never believed I could do. I saw myself as worthwhile. I began to understand that having been assaulted does not define me. I had the power to change my life. I became enthralled with the amazing

art form that is aerial dance. It worked better than any other form of exercise ever had, and more importantly, it made me believe I deserve to be happy. It gave me something to be passionate about, instead of being haunted by my assault. I never get tired of achieving new tricks and spins. And it was all me, making it happen. Once pole proved to me that I could live a normal life, things really changed. I finally told my family what happened, and they accepted me! I got control of my feelings and my life finally began. I owe it to pole dancing. I cant believe the healing power I experienced and I am eternally grateful. Pole dancing is a journey. We begin unsure of our skills and coordination. With each class we see progress unfold and we recognize our beauty. Mastering new moves creates immense joy and we feel empowered. I love to watch ladies come to life in the studio. It is as if negativity is left at

the door and the lights get a little brighter. This kind of personal growth breeds resilience. The feeling of being hijacked by trauma fades to the background. Pole dancing proves to be a healthy and effective strategy for women to leave their pasts behind and to become the best versions of themselves.

iora tissue and towel products give consumers exactly what theyre looking for softness, strength and absorbency with products that are just right for their family and their budget. In October of 2013, Fiora introduced significant product improvements to most of its tissue and towel lineup. Fiora tissue is now softer, stronger and more absorbent, while Fiora towels now come in three-ply sheets that are right-size for less waste. With roll sizes that give consumers far more than leading double rolls, Fiora tissue and towels are still one of the best values on retail shelves. Additional product improvements include: Fiora Regular Bath Tissue and Scented Bath Tissue are 7 percent thicker, so they are softer, stronger and more absorbent. Plus, at 330 sheets per roll, they provide twice the sheet count of the leading double roll. Fiora Premium Bath Tissue is softer, thicker and more absorbent than before, and at 230 sheets per roll, thats still 39 percent more than the leading premium double rolls. right-size sheets thats more absorbency and less waste. Fiora Towels are the first three-ply paper towels on the market. The Fiora brand was born from a vision to redefine the way tissue products are made and sold in the U.S. Its team is on a mission to challenge the status quo and give U.S. consumers more choices. Fiora understands that as the economy is changing, so are consumer priorities. Thats why the brand is constantly observing the world and marketplace, working to find solutions that are right for consumers everywhere. Fiora is marketed by Oasis Brands, a company that believes everyone can be empowered to make a difference, no matter how large or small, in order to make this world a better place. Thats why Oasis Brands is committed to giving back to neighbors in the communities where Fiora is sold. Fioras bright colors and upbeat outlook serve as a reminder that when times get tough, we can all get tougher by aspiring to a brighter future and finding the happy in whatever circumstance we are in looking forward instead of back, and drawing inspiration in everything we do.

co-friendly lifestyles arent just for adults. Encouraging kids to go green at a young age can set them up for a lifetime of making decisions with the environment in mind. The following are just a few ways parents can impart a sense of responsibility to the environment on their youngsters. Lead by example. Many kids try to mimic their parents behaviors, and moms and dads can take advantage of that by making sure kids see them as they recycle, conserve water or make other eco-conscious choices. If kids want to know why youre separating trash or opting for tap water over bottled water, explain to them the positive impact that such behaviors can have on the health of the planet. Encourage eco-friendly hobbies. Todays youngsters have a host of technology at their disposal, and parents know full well that such access can be both good and bad. While technology can enhance learning in the classroom and beyond, gaming systems and other electronic devices have made it easy for kids to forgo outdoor activities in favor of more sedentary hobbies. Many medical researchers believe that such hobbies are contributing to higher rates of childhood obesity. But they also can harm the environment. Gaming systems, whether played on televisions, computers or handheld devices, use a substantial amount of energy. Parents who encourage more eco-friendly activities, such as reading or playing outside, can get the best of both worlds, as kids will be getting out and about and embracing activities that dont harm the planet.
www.naturespathways.com
Ride bicycles more often. Reducing fuel consumption is one of the most effective ways to reduce your carbon footprint, and even though kids cant drive, that doesnt mean they cant pitch in to conserve fuel. Children who attend school close to home can ride their bikes rather than taking the bus or hitching a ride with mom or dad. Explain to youngsters the impact that such a choice can have on the environment, and ride bikes with your kids whenever possible, be it on trips to the park or to visit friends and family members. Many kids love to ride their bikes, and they might like it even more if they understand the positive impact that such a hobby is having on their planet. Teach kids to reuse products. Waste is a significant environmental issue, but reusing products is a great way to cut back on waste. Items that would once be tossed into the trash after serving their purpose can be repurposed when tackling projects around the house, and kids can get in on the act, too. Rather than purchasing store-bought decorations for holidays like Halloween or Chanukah and Christmas, reuse old products to craft homemade decorations. Birthday gifts or items exchanged during the holidays can be wrapped in old newspaper instead of store-bought wrapping paper. Many products that would otherwise be discarded can be reused, and kids might enjoy finding new ways to make use of old items.

t may or may not be hard for you to trust a psychologist or other health care professional. Whatever the case, effective therapy depends on building teamwork through mutual trust and respect. Experiencing abuse or neglect early in life makes it hard to trust anyone, and hard to even feel safe. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is largely about losing whatever sense of safety in the world you have, following trauma. In the Veterans Administration hospital system in California, where I did my internship, combat is the best known cause of PTSD. Here in Wisconsin, the most common cause of PTSD is motor vehicle accidents. But it can be shocking to find clients who had never felt safe and couldnt imagine feeling safe due to childhood abuse and neglect. The most important parenting jobs are to offer unconditional love and acceptance, comfort and protection. Without these basics, people grow up feeling worthless, angry and afraid. Most clients when asked will say they feel safe in a therapists office. This is often an effort to be a good, cooperative client. People who have experienced early abuse and neglect seldom feel safe until they address the issue honestly. Some aspects of how people

feel in a therapists office can be addressed. Things like the lighting being too bright or too dark. Is the therapist too close or too far away? Too much eye contact or not enough? One of my clients had been abused by family loudly calling attention to her appearance with ridicule so that she wanted to be invisible. Another had been molested by an uncle sneaking into her bedroom in darkness and

she wanted the therapy room to be bright. When doing hypnosis, its traditional to expect the clients to close their eyes. This may be impossible for someone who has been abused, so a therapist might suggest that the client keep his or her eyes open and unfocused. Another struggle many people have lies in trusting themselves after years of keeping family secrets or being told that they are too sensitive, too imaginative and too silly, or even evil. Its confusing and disorienting. Your inner truth is at odds with what others insist is the truth. Sometimes, the mistrust of ones self is to the point that people worry about their sanity and are afraid the therapist will see them as crazy. Another aspect of trust lies in questions about who this therapist is, what his/her personal and professional experience is, and will he/she understand my background and needs? When I came back to Wisconsin from Montana, I was a community psychologist serving all ages in a rural county. My first patient was a welder whose house had just burned down. His clothes showed evidence of the fire. He wanted to know what made me think I could understand a working stiff like him. So I let him know my dad was a factory worker with a sixthgrade education and mom had a 10th-grade education and stayed at home. As a psychologist, Im okay with answering reasonable questions if it helps establish trust. Speaking of questions, therapists ask a lot of those, especially in the first session. If there are questions you arent ready to deal with yet, let your therapist know. Your therapist might talk a bit about the methods he or she uses in that first session, but there might not be time for a lot of detail. Your therapist should be able to offer a variety of approaches, such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing), EFT Emotional Freedom Technique), energy psychology, existential psychology or hypnosis so that together you can select the best approach.

t is a tale as old as time, once thought lost as most ancient arts were. Apprenticeship is generally the best form of trade education. Traditionally, we attribute apprenticeships to medieval blacksmiths, leather workers and carpenters; families that could not afford to raise their children would send them to a master craftsman to be raised as his apprentice. This lost art of education is slowly beginning to resurrect in todays society. Apprenticeships are on the rise, and we are finally noticing more of this kind of education option, as well as more programs assisting in apprenticeships. Recent studies counted 800-plus apprenticeable careers in the United States alone. Taking in students not only teaches them a trade, but nurtures a passion, instills wisdom and truly gives guidance toward complete mastery of that trade. Tobin Campbell, a salon and spa owner who currently has an apprentice, discussed what its like to be a modern day master: I really embrace the apprenticeship program. Its great, because you dont seek it. You see something in someone and feel this need to take them in, teach them every single aspect of the craft and watch them grow. Apprenticeships are never planned. You get someone who truly believes in you and you share a mutual trust and belief in each other, which is awesome. You get to give everything you know to someone. I love it because the teaching never stops. There is no graduation. Yes, there is a point where the apprentice is ready to take a chair of his/her own and take on

their own clientele, but we are never ever done growing or changing. There is always more to learn from one another. You can go off script and teach out of order, because every individual receives things in different ways. Its a challenge. Its a special gift I get to pass on. Apprenticing remains the best form of training for skilled craft workers in barbering, carpentry, metal work, leather work, etc. It truly is the lost art of education and it is refreshing to see it being kept alive by our modern day masters.

Bilberry
(Vaccinium myrtillus)
ilberry is a relative of the blueberry, and its fruit is commonly used to make pies and jams. It has been used for nearly 1,000 years in traditional European medicine. Bilberry grows in North America, Europe and northern Asia. Historically, bilberry fruit was used to treat diarrhea, scurvy and other conditions. Today, the fruit is used as a folk or traditional remedy for diarrhea, menstrual cramps, eye problems, varicose veins, venous insufficiency (a condition in which the veins do not efficiently return blood from the legs to the heart) and other circulatory problems. Bilberry leaf is used for entirely different conditions, including diabetes.
The fruit of the bilberry plant can be eaten or made into extracts. Similarly, the leaves of the bilberry plant can be made into extracts or used to make teas.
Some claim that bilberry fruit improves night vision, but clinical studies have not shown this to be true. There is not enough scientific evidence to support the use of bilberry fruit or leaf for any health conditions.
Bilberry fruit is considered safe when consumed in amounts typically found in foods, or as an extract in recommended doses for brief periods of time. Long-term safety and side effects have not been extensively studied. High doses or extended use of bilberry leaf or leaf extract are considered unsafe due to possible toxic side effects. Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care. For tips about talking with your health care providers about complementary and alternative medicine, see NCCAMs Time to Talk campaign.

ACUPUNCTURE
Healthy Living Acupuncture Sarah Atkinson 55 Stafford St., Plymouth 920.893.8796 www.healthylivingacu.com Acupuncture is a medical treatment that has evolved from Chinese medicine using noninvasive treatment methods. I move qi (pronounced chee) to inuence the patterns of illness, pain and disease with very thin stainless steel needles. Common inuences of qi disharmony are physical and emotional stress, poor diet, accidents and other excessive activities. When these occur, the body becomes unbalanced; but with acupuncture, it bounces back to a state of health! The National Institutes of Health and World Health Organization recognize acupuncture as effective in treating: addiction, emotional problems, arthritis, asthma, carpal tunnel, digestive complaints, pain in tendons, joints and muscles, trigeminal neuralgia, UTI, fertility, menopause, sinusitis and sleep disturbances.
