GETTING STARTED
Adobe Photoshop CS6 is a popular image editing software that provides a work environment consistent with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop and other products in the Adobe Creative Suite. his tutorial is an introduction to using Adobe Photoshop. !ere "ou will learn how to get started, how to use the interface, and how to modif" images with basic editing skills.

GETTING STARTED
1. 0egin b" opening Adobe Photoshop CS6. 5n a PC, click Start 6 Programs 6 Adobe 6 Photoshop CS6, or click on the shortcut on the desktop. 5n a 1ac, click %o 6 Applications 6 Adobe Photoshop CS6 6 Photoshop CS6 shown in 7igure #, or click the icon in the Dock.
Setting up "our document correctl" from the start will make "our 9ob much easier as "ou work through "our pro9ect. his will re:uire some advanced planning. 7or e+ample, if "our final output will be a brochure, "ou ma" need to set up "our document to be hori4ontal and double;sided. o create a new document, click 7ile 6 8ew. his will open the Document Setup dialog bo+ <7igure '=.
!ere "ou will be able to name "our file, set up the correct page si4e and orientation for "our document. 5ptions include, but are not limited to$
Page Size and Orientation Change the page si4e b" t"ping in new values for width and height. Page si4e represents the final si4e "ou want after bleeds or trimming other marks outside the page. In the Preset dropdown menu "ou can find such common si4es as letter, legal, tabloid, etc. "ping in e+act values for !eight and >idth gives "ou more control over the si4e and orientation of "our page. Resolution 3esolution is the number of pi+els on a printed area of an image. he higher the resolution, the more pi+els there are on the page, the better the :ualit" of the image. !owever, high resolution increases the si4e of the file. he standard recommended resolution for printed images is #),;&,,, for >eb images it is -'. Color Mode Choose a color mode that will best fit "our pro9ect. 7or e+ample, when making a graphic for a web site, choose 3%0. >hen making an image for print choose C1?@. Background Contents Choose the background$ white, color or transparent. >hen "ou have entered all of "our document settings, click 5k. Opening an image from a disk If the image "ou have is saved on a disk or to the computer, select 7ile 6 5pen, and then navigate to the disk driveAfile where "our image is saved. Choose the image file and click 5pen. At this point, "ou ma" want to save "our image under a different name so that "ou can alwa"s have the original to fall back on in case of a mistake. o save "our file, select 7ile 6 Save As and t"pe in the new name of the file in the dialogue bo+. 4

Menu Bar If "ou look at the top of the screen "ou will see the 1enu bar <7igure &=, which contains all the main functions of Photoshop, such as 7ile, 2dit, Image, (a"er, Select, 7ilter, Anal"sis, &D, Biew, >indow, and !elp. Toolbar 1ost of the ma9or tools are located in the oolbar for eas" access. The Image he image will appear in its own window once "ou open a file. Image Name he name of an" image that "ou open will be at the top of the image window as shown above. Palettes Palettes contain functions that help "ou monitor and modif" images. 0" default, palettes are stacked together in groups. hese are the palettes that are usuall" visible$ Color, Ad9ustments and (a"ers. If none of the palettes are visible, go to >indow in the 1enu bar and choose the palettes "ou need. 5
% Palettes
0elow is the description of the most commonl" used palettes in Adobe Photoshop CS6. Palettes used for more advanced image editing will be covered in the Adobe Photoshop CS6 utorial ; Intermediate. Color S!atches St"le he Color palette <7igure *= displa"s the current foreground and background colors and 3%0 values for these colors. ?ou can use the sliders to change the foreground and background colors in different color modes. ?ou can also choose a color from the spectrum of colors displa"ed in the color ramp at the bottom of the palette.
In the Swatches palette <7igure )= "ou can choose a foreground or background color and add a customi4ed color to the librar".
he St"les palette <7igure 6= allows "ou to view, select, and appl" preset la"er st"les. 0" default, a preset st"le replaces the current la"er st"le. ?ou can use the st"les in the palette or add "our own using the Create 8ew St"le icon.

#istor" he !istor" palette <7igure -= stores and displa"s each action performed allowing "ou 9ump to an" recent stage of the image alteration. he alterations should be created during the current working session. After saving or closing the document, the !istor" palette clears all the contents. 2ach time "ou appl" a change to an image, the new state of that image is added to the palette. It is important to know that once "ou click on an" of the previ; ous stages, all the changes that were made after it will be lost.
$d%ustments he Ad9ustment la"ers palette give "ou the abilit" to appl" an effect to a group of la"ers in Photoshop, and then "ou can edit that effect later, while preserving the original la"ers.
&a"ers (a"ers let "ou organi4e "our work into distinct levels that can be edited and viewed as individual units. 2ver" Photoshop CS6 document contains at least one la"er. Creating multiple la"ers lets "ou easil" control how "our artwork is printed, displa"ed, and edited. ?ou will use the (a"ers palette <7igure /= often while creating a docu;ment, so it is crucial to understand what it does and how to use it. A= (a"er Bisibilit" ; he e"e shows that the selected la"er is visible. Click on or off to see or to hide a la"er. 0= (a"er (ocking 5ptions ;Click the checkered s:uare icon to lock ransparenc", click the brush icon to lock the Image, click the arrow icon to lock the Position, and click the lock icon to lock all options. (a"er (ock ; he icon shows when the la"er is locked and disappears when it is unlocked. Click the little black triangle to see st"le options. 9)(a"er 1ask ;Allows "ou to hide certain parts of the la"er, which can then be revealed b" using the paintbrush and the white paint color to e+pose portions of the la"er. 10) (a"er Set ; his option helps to organi4e images with multiple la"ers. Click the icon to create a folder for several la"ers. 11) Create 8ew 7ill or Ad9ustment (a"er ;!ave the same opacit" and blending mode options as image la"ers and can be rearranged, deleted, hidden and duplicated in the same manner as image la"ers. Click the icon and select an option to create a new fill or ad9ustment la"er. 12) Create 8ew (a"er ;Click this icon to create a new la"er. 13) Delete (a"er ; o delete a la"er, select a la"er in the (a"ers palette and drag it to the trash can icon, or select a la"er and click the icon.
