Step by Step instructions for applying the Theis method Using Excel and PowerPoint 2007 ( !

E"#0$
This handout goes through the Theis method for homework problem 4 of lesson 13/14. Go to the class web page and download the lesson 13/14 homework problem set and the Theis data type curve excel spreadsheet. http //www.agls.uidaho.edu/bae4!"/14#$ell#%ydraulics/module#14#&.htm The method is broken down into five main steps 1. 'reating the (Type chart) &. 'reating the (s curve chart)

3. 'reating identical scales for the (s curve chart) and the (Type 'hart) 4. *sing +ower+oint to overlay the (s curve chart) and the (Type chart) !. 'alculating Transmissivity ,T- and the .torage 'oefficient ,.- using the intersection point
/ach of these steps will be described in detail below.

1. 'reating the (Type) 'hart

.tep 1 0nsert two header rows and column headings in the (u) and ($,u-) data worksheet. .elect the (type curve) worksheet and insert two new rows at the top of the worksheet. ,.elect the (%ome) tab then find the (0nsert) button. +ut the cursor in cell 11 and then from the pull down menu select (insert sheet rows). .elect this button twice to insert two rows-. 1dd labels to each column heading. Type in the letter (u) in cell 1& and the letter ($,u-) in cell 2&. .tep & 'reate the u vs $,u- (type) graph. 3irst highlight the entire block of data 13 2144. Then select the main (0nsert) tab and then select the (.catter) button and from the pull down menu select the (scatter with straight lines and markers) graph. This should create a graph in your worksheet. /xcel will always assume that the first column represents the hori5ontal (6) coordinates of the graph and the second column represents the vertical (7) coordinates of the graph. This is the correct assumption for this data. .tep 3 0t is important in the Theis problem to move this chart to its own separate sheet. To do this first select the graph with the left button on your mouse and then click the right button on your mouse and select the option called (8ove chart). .elect the (9ew .heet) button and type in a name such as (Type chart). .tep 4 'onvert the 6 and 7 axis to logarithmic scale. 3irst select the chart then select the (:ayout) tab. 9ow you can right click on one of the axis and select (3ormat 1xis) or go to the upper left corner of the :ayout window where it has a pull down menu which probably says (+lot

area); click on the downward arrow then select either the (%ori5ontal ,value- axis) or the (<ertical ,value- axis). Then click the (3ormat selection) option directly below this window. 7ou should now have a window opened entitled (3ormat 1xis). 'heck the box in this window called (:ogarithmic scale) then click (close). =epeat this step for the other axis. .tep ! 1dd gridlines. .elect the chart; then select the (:ayout) tab and click on the (Gridlines) pull down menu. 0n this menu select (+rimary %ori5ontal Gridlines) then select (8a>or and 8inor Gridlines). ?o the same thing again for the (+rimary <ertical Gridlines). .tep 4 =emove the chart legend. ?o this by selecting the legend and then press delete.

&. 'reating the (s curve chart)

.tep 1 'reate two continuous columns of time versus drawdown data. .elect the (?ata) worksheet. %ighlight 11 0& then press the right button on your mouse and select (copy). Then select cell 11&; press the right button on your mouse and select (+aste .pecial). This will open up the (+aste .pecial) window. 0n this window check the (Transpose) box then click (ok). .tep & 'opy the remaining data and paste it below the data in .tep 1. %ighlight 23 04; copy; and use the paste special transpose option again pasting the data below the previous block into cell 1&1. =epeat this same step for the last block of data 24 04. .tep 3 Type in the pumping rate and the distance to the well information provided by the problem. 0n cell 1@ type in (+umping =ate ,A- B). 0n cell 2@ type in (!""). 0n cell '@ type in (gpm). 0n cell 1C type in (?istance to well ,r- B). 0n cell 2C type in (&""). 0n cell 'C type in (ft). .tep 4 The s curve in the Theis method plots (r&/t vs s) where r is the distance from the pump in feet units and t is time since pumping started in days. 0n this step you will create a column for r&/t in units of feet and days. Go to cell '1& and type in (r&/t ,ft&/day-). Go to cell '13 and type in the following formula (B,D2DCE&-/113F4"F&4) ,9ote the 4"F&4 converts minutes to days-. The value for this cell will show up as (G?0</"H) since you are dividing by 5ero. 7ou will ignore this value in your analysis. 9ext select cell '13 and double click on the little black box in lower right hand corner of the cell. This should copy this formula down to the end of the column. .tep ! 0n this step you will create a column for (s). Go to cell ?1& and type in (s ,ft-). Then got to cell ?13 and type in (B213). 9ext select ?13 and double click on the lower right hand corner of the cell to copy down the formula as in .tep 4. .tep 4 9ow you have the data to create a (r&/t vs s) chart. %ighlight block '14 ?34 and follow steps 3 through I from the ('reating the Type 'hart) instructions above. 9ame this chart (s curve chart).

3. 'reating identical scales for the (s curve chart) and the (Type 'hart) 0n the Theis method you are reJuired to overlay the (. curve chart) on the (Type chart) and find a match point. 0t is essential that both these graphs are at the same scale in the x and y direction.

.tep 1 :imit the range of the xKaxis on the (s curve chart) so that chart focuses in on the data. 0n this problem the r&/t data ranges from 1"";""" ,1e!- to 1"";""";""" ,1e@ft&/day. To focus the chart only on this range then select the axis then press the right button on the mouse and select (3ormat 1xis). 'lick the (3ixed) button next to the 8inimum value. Type in (1e!) in this box. 9ext click the (3ixed) button next to the 8aximum value. Type in (1e@) in this box. ,note we rounded this maximum value up to the nearest order of magnitude-. 0t may be easier to read to convert the xKaxis values to scientific notation by selecting the (9umber) tab in the (3ormat 1xis) window. .tep & The axis of the (Type 'hart) should be formatted to match the same yKaxis values as then sKcurve chart and the xKaxis should have the same scale ,not necessarily the same values- as the xKaxis in (s curve chart). =ight click each axis of the (Type chart) to get to the (3ormat axis) window. The yKaxis should be set to range from ".1 to 1" >ust like the (s chart curve) and the xKaxis should be set to the four orders of magnitude where the $,u- values are within ".1 to 1". 3or this problem this xKaxis range is from 1eK3 and 1. .tep 3 0n order to make this charts identical in scale select the xKaxis; open the (format axis) window using the right button of the mouse; then select under the (<ertical 1xis crosses ) option the (1xis <alue ) button and enter in the value (1eK3) in the box. 1t this point the si5e of the (s curve chart) and the (Type chart) should be identical. 9ow would be a good time to save the spreadsheetH 4. *sing +ower+oint to overlay the (s curve chart) and the (Type chart) .tep 1 2efore you overlay each chart you must first remove all background color from one of the charts. $e will remove the background color of the (s curve chart). Goto the (s curve chart) then right click the chart outside of the x and y axis and select (3ormat 'hart 1rea). *nder the (3ill) tab select (9o 3ill) button and (close) the window. 9ext right click the plot area ,inside the boundaries of the x and y axis- and select (3ormat +lot 1rea). 1gain select the (9o 3ill) button and close the window. .tep & The actual overlay procedure will be conducted within power point. Lpen power point and remove all title formatting from the power point slide. 7ou can do this by right clicking the slide then selecting (layout) and choosing the (2lank) option. .tep 3 Go back to excel and goto the (Type curve chart). =ight click the chart and select copy. Then go back to power point; select the (%ome) tab; click the (+aste) pull down menu and select (+aste .pecial) then select (+icture ,/nhanced 8etafile-) .tep 4 =epeat step 3 for the (s curve chart).

.tep ! 7ou should now be able to see both charts on top of each other. 1t this point it is helpful to recolor the (s curve chart) picture so that you can better distinguish one chart from the other. =ight click the (s curve chart) picture that you >ust pasted into power point and select (3ormat +icture). *nder the (+icture) tab select the drop down menu next to (=ecolor). .elect one of the (?ark variations) then (close) this window. .tep 4 7ou should now check to make sure each picture is si5ed identically to each other. .elect the (s curve chart) picture then use the arrow keys to line up the charts on top of each other. 0f the charts arenMt the exact same si5e then you will need to drag one or two sides of the picture to make them match. ,9ote To make finer ad>ustments hold down the control key at the same time while moving the chart with the arrow keys..tep I Lnce you confirm that both charts are the same si5e you now should move the (sKcurve chart) so that the (r&/t vs .) line completely covers the (u vs $,u-) line. This may take some fine tuning with the arrow keys to get them laid out >ust right. .tep @ Lnce you have both lines overlapping each other you need to find an intersection point where you can read the coordinates of a point both in the (s curve chart) and in the (Type chart). This point does not have to be on the line. Lne way to easily read off the coordinates is to use the drawing tool in power point to create a point right at this intersection point. *nder the (%ome) tab in +ower+oint select the oval shape and draw a small oval in the slide. 8ove this oval over the intersection point. .tep C 7ou should now write down the ,r&/t; s- and ,u; $,u-- coordinates of this intersection point. 0t may be necessary to move one chart over while you read the other chart. !. 'alculating Transmissivity ,T- and the .torage 'oefficient ,.- using the intersection point .tep 1 Go back to your excel spreadsheet where your data is located. Type in (u B) in cell 3@; enter in your (u) coordinate in cell G@N type in ($,u- B) in cell 3C; enter your ($,u-) coordinate in cell GCN type in (r&/t B) in cell 31"; enter you (r&/t) coordinate in cell G1"; type in (ft&/day) in cell %1"N type in (s B) in cell 3 11; enter your (s) coordinate in cell G11; and type in (ft) in %11. .tep & 'alculate T and .. Type in (Transmissivity ,T- B) in cell O1". Type in the formula (B114.4F2@FGC/G11) in cell P1"N type in (gpd/ft) in cell :1". Type in (.torage coefficient ,.- B) in cell O11. Type in the formula (BG@FP1"/,1.@IFG1"-) in cell P11.
