Welcome to Delphos! Our city is located in Northwest Ohio along the US30 corridor. US30, previously known as Lincoln Highway, was the first trans-continental highway in the United States and helped Delphos prosper. The Miami-Erie Canal was also instrumental in the development of Delphos and runs through the heart of our city. The same work ethic and perseverance that it took to build the canal and the Lincoln Highway is still evident in Delphos today. Our forefathers worked in the face of much adversity and many hardships to establish this wonderful place that we now call home. That is why we are all very proud of Delphos and of our heritage. Our churches, schools, businesses and organizations are second to none and stand as a testament to our founders. Whenever our citizens are called on to lend a hand, there is always an abundance of volunteerism and good will toward many worthwhile causes. Delphos has also positioned itself for future progress with our new reservoir and water treatment plant and our state-of-the-art membrane waste water treatment plant. We invite you to learn more about our city, so please call, e-mail, or visit our web site, and see why Delphos is known as Americas Friendliest City. We look forward to meeting you! Thank You! History
Delphos has the distinction of being situated in two counties. The Miami and Erie Canal divides it into two nearly equal portions. The part east of this canal lies in Allen County, and the part west is within Van Wert County. In 1840, when the first vote was taken in Washington Township, only 10 votes were cast, and Thomas W.

Bowdle was elected justice of the peace. The first plat of the town was made by Ferdinand Bredeick, on the west side of the canal, and the Rev. John Otto Bredeick, coming a couple of years later, laid out the addition on the east side of the canal. John was a Roman Catholic priest, and reserved a large plat of ground for church pur-

poses. He gave this as a free gift. For a number of years, early Delphos was known as East Bredeick and West Bredeick. There were a couple of other little settlements, which were known respectively as: Section Ten and Howard Town. The two former being settled by Germans and the other (See History page 19)

Delphos home of stargazer Leslie Peltier

Leslie Peltier was born on a small farm east of Delphos on Jan. 2, 1900. Growing up on a farm surrounded by forests and bordered by the Auglaize River, Leslie quickly acquired an appreciation and love of nature and the natural world. His introduction to the night sky occurred at age five when his mother introduced him to the Pleiades on a crisp, clear, winter night. A book from a kindly librarian brought the rest of the universe into focus and Leslies quest for knowledge of the night sky took off. As a teen Leslie earned $18 for a mail order telescope by picking 900 quarts

of strawberries on his fathers farm, earning two cents per quart. The 2i refractor arrived a few weeks later and 64 continuous years of night time observing began. Four years of sweeping the night sky for comets finally came to fruition on Friday, November 13, 1925. Leslie came upon a fuzzy something in a cluster of stars. He focused in on this something and saw it had the trademark tail of a comet. Exhilarated, Leslie carefully plotted the location and telephoned the Delphos telegram station. Finding

it closed and his only option the signal tower at the Pennsylvania Railroad station, Leslie raced toward Delphos in the dark on his bicycle. The telegram of his find to the Harvard College Observatory was answered a week later with the news that he had, indeed, discovered a new comet. Merry Go Round Observatory In November 1933 ,Leslie married Dorothy Nihiser. The Peltiers set up their household first in Leslies uncles house and later in a small house in Delphos. It was in 1937 that Leslie used his skill as a designer at the Delphos Bending Company to design and build his ground-breaking Merry-GoRound observatory. For the first time an entire observatory rotated to follow the stars. This new observatory followed the Peltiers to their new home, Brookhaven, in 1948. In 1959, Stanley Peltier, Leslie and Dotties youngest son, was a student at Miami University in Oxford. During renovation the universitys observatory was scheduled to be razed. Stanley convinced the university that his father could use the observatory and its 12i refractor telescope. Within a few months, the observatory was erected about 100 yards north of the Peltier home at Brookhaven. For the next 20 years the observatory would scour the night sky and host thousands of interested stargazers and school children. Leslie Peltier died of a heart attack in 1980. His death was mourned by all across the astronomy world. His hometown of Delphos honored his life with a memorial sun dial, above, on the grounds of the public library, where he served on the board for more than 30 years.

He said he did not want a Catholic town, as that would make the people selfish and narrow. He wanted all classes and all creeds to commingle. The post office occupied a small room built on a platform of the lock between the gates of the canal, on the Van Wert County side. Amos Clutter was the postmaster in 1847. The first hotel was opened in the spring of 1845. It was built by Morgan Savage, and was named Travelers Rest. The second was built by James Graver, in the same year, and was called the Ohio House. When the Ohio & Indiana Railroad, a part of the Pennsylvania Companys main line, was built in 1854, much of the iron for its construction was brought down by the canal from Toledo.
