Benjamin Menor: Using His Responsibility to Empower His People with Rights

Anthony Menor

Senior Division Website Project

My website project encompassed an overall thesis that between the mid 1900s and 1970s, Benjamin Menor was responsible for reforming a discriminating society in Hawaii, defending fairness as an American Supreme Court Justice, inspiring opportunity as an attorney, and upholding democracy as a politician, eventually motivating a movement of Filipino success stories and new rights. I was originally considering a topic that pertained to unionism and labor, because I was accustomed to this subject. I did a project on the creation of labor unions last year and went to districts. Eventually, however, I opened my mind up to a deeper possibility for my project. I wanted to have a new and more intimate experience, so I picked a project about my grandfather. I knew he was very well respected for his achievements and conveniently they related to labor and unions in some aspects. I never met him, but really respected him and felt that I should honor him and deliver this message about how important he was. I ended up participating in history day because it was apart of the class curriculum. I went to many places to find my resources. I went to various libraries such as the Mililani High School Library, as well as the UH Manoa Library. It was a good experience researching in this manner and I benefited from it. I also went searching on the Internet using many search tools. To create a more authentic project, I also went to people in interviews. My most valuable resources would be the interviews (for its authentic element) and the resources by the Filipino historian Belinda Aquino. Her expertise enriched her sources and helped me a lot. I feel that as time went by with my project, I became more engaged. I gained more ideas about how to construct my website and found more and more importance in telling this story. Deciding what made it into the website wasnt easy, but I made sure it was relevant and meaningful in some way,

especially when there was a word count. I put my entry together by working off of what was on my original research paper. I had the sources and the information so I was just trying to bring it to life on my website, with each paragraph somewhat representing a page. I needed to keep it organized. I certainly dealt with and resolved problems with a narrow selection of primary sources that focused on Benjamin. My topic relates to the theme, because, as I constantly say again and again, he had a responsibility to empower his people with rights and now we have rights to do the same. This has been very valuable as Ive become much more prideful as a Filipino and think this is important to history and to others as it is quite inspiring and gives the history of Filipinos richness and positivity.
