(30 minutes) Teacher Overview: Teacher should be well acquainted with playing the piano as well as leading vocal warm-ups with a choir. Teacher must also know Solfege as well as the Curwen hand signs. Teacher must be able to sing and play the song Do-Re-Mi. Teacher must have video cameras set up to record student leaders. Must have student iPads available with the 8mm app. Objectives: Students will lead the class in singing a warm-up. Students will use Curwen hand sign posters to see and reinforce their memorization of each sign. Students will use the 8mm app to record each other performing the Musical Hopscotch. Content Standards: Sub-Strand 1.1 Read, write, and perform simple rhythmic patterns, using eighth notes, quarter notes, half notes, and rests. Sub-Strand 1.2 Read, write, and perform simple patterns of pitch, using solfege. Sub-Strand 2.2 Sing age-appropriate songs from memory. Instruction: The students take their places on the risers and the teacher begins with a Soto Voce exercise. Then, the teacher selects volunteers who would like to lead the class in an exercise. These students are video recorded from two cameras located on each end of the choir. The videos will be uploaded onto the class website where the students can direct their families to see them conduct. Then, the teacher plays the clip from The Sound of Music, Live! that contains the song Do-Re-Mi. Eight students in the front row will be given the Curwen hand sign posters to hold up when their respective syllable is sung. While this is going on, each student will be performing hand signs along with the video. Next, selected students will take turns using an iPad with the 8mm app to video record students performing the Music Hopscotch. Students may choose a filter to use for their turn. Finally, a few more students lead the class in a Soto Voce exercise while being video recorded.
