A Warehouse Management System (WMS) can be built through a bespoke development or by


cho0sing various standard packages available in the market based on the organizational needs.

This module of the training program discusses the standard package vendors in WMS space and
tries to list out some of the standard WMS use cases functions.

Manhattan is recognized as the market revenue leader among the specialty WMS vendors. It is
one of the few public non-ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) supply chain software companies.

 Manhattan has three versions of WMS: one each for the IBM iSeries platform, “open”
platforms of Windows and UNIX, and Warehouse for Windows.

 Manhattan provides the best-in-class yard management functionality.

 Provides detailed ASN (Advance Ship Notice) information along with a supplier portal
for manually capturing this information.

 Integrates inbound information into WMS logic to enable cross docking and labour
planning

 Configurable rules enable the assignment of shipments to the best dock door available
based on user-defined parameters.

 A graphical representation of the yard shows location status, trailer status, and
visibility into truckload contents.

 Within the WMS, there is visibility into QC (Quality Control) processes, and the product
can easily manage the inbound or outbound inspection work.

 Can control both lot controlled and serialized inventory

 Provides a strong wave building capability

 Provides strong configuration capabilities for setting up VAS procedures

 Strong shipping capabilities in areas such as document management/ rate management


etc.

 HighJump provides a robust yard management capability.

 Provides detailed ASN (Advance Ship Notice) information along with a supplier portal
for manually capturing this information.

 Inbound visibility is incorporated into warehouse management logic to facilitate cross-
docking and labor planning.

 A graphical representation of the yard shows location status, trailer status, and
visibility into truckload contents.

 Recommends a door based on the putaway class of the inventory on the trailer and the
compatibility of the trailer with the dock door.

 Has strong inventory management features

 Wave planning is a standout feature with a user interface that is both intuitive and
extremely flexible
 Quality control is more oriented to outbound control rather inbound control

WM Process, and Dispatcher.
RedPrairie is a pioneer of leading labor management functionality..

 RedPrairie offers a strong yard management capability, with extensive functionality


around inbound visibility and ASN capture.

 Inbound visibility is incorporated into warehouse management logic to facilitate cross-


docking and labor planning.

 Appointment scheduling is more limited in the package

 Configurable rules enable the assignment of shipments to the best dock door available
based on user-defined parameters.

 A graphical representation of the yard shows location status, trailer status, and
visibility into truckload contents.

 Quality control is strong, with flexible sampling plans. Users can manually update the
sampling plan set for a supplier or item, based on QC results.

 Provides strong inventory control

 Provides strong Wave planning capability , with extremely flexible UI for building wave

 Catalyst's yard management is being re-platformed to a web based application, which


will lead to a strong yard management functionality

 In addition to providing detailed ASN information, Catalyst provides a supplier portal


for manually capturing this information.

docking and labor planning.

 Configurable rules enable the assignment of shipments to the best dock-door available
based on user-defined parameters.

 A graphical representation of the yard shows location status, trailer status, and

 Catalyst's quality control capabilities are provided through the vendor's supplier-quality
module, which is more geared to manage compliance than quality.

 Provides standard set of inventory control capabilities. There exists less flexibility in
defining product attributes

 Provides basic and advanced Wave planning capabilities

 Has strong shipping capabilities on the basics but the transportation oriented
capabilities are in a separate module leaving fewer capabilities within WMS

 Can support a returns process with the exception of refurbishment

 Converted to service oriented architecture and web services platform with the
conversion of its yard management solution

 SAP SCM 5.0 provides a solid yard management capability, with extensive features for
capturing and providing inbound information.

 In addition to providing detailed ASN information, the vendor provides a supplier portal
for manually capturing this information.

 Inbound visibility is incorporated into warehouse management logic to facilitate cross-


docking and labor planning.

 Provides information that enables a user to determine optimal dock-door selection.

 List-driven visibility is provided into location status, trailer status, and visibility into
truckload contents. Extensive filters are provided for searching and viewing this
information.

 Quality control is provided through a separate module within its product suite. At the
same time it limits the visibility into QC from a warehouse perspective.

 Provides strong inventory control functionalities

 SAP SCM 5.0 provides workflow support for value added services

 Has very strong shipping capabilities

 Manages the complete returns process including refurbishment and can manage recalls
by item and location

 Labour standards and productivity improvement is an area of future improvement


opportunities for SAP

Oracle offers customers a WMS module within its E-Business Suite (EBS), J.D.Edwards
EnterpriseOne, and Oracle Retail WMS acquired from Retek.
 Oracle EBS does not currently provide yard management, but the application can be
configured to provide basic check-in/checkout functionality.
 Can manage inbound and outbound dock door assignments with limited functionality
Provides a strong QC control and standard inventory control capabilities.
 Wave building capability provides a flexible UI for selecting orders to include with a
wave, but is less flexible in supporting a wave building process.
 Receiving control is robust but cross docking facilities are more limited
 Oracle’s value added services capabilities are limited
 Provides basic shipping capabilities. Transportation oriented shipping features are
better managed through Oracle’s transportation module.
 Provides extensive recalls and returns capability except for managing refurbishment
 Does not provide labour management within WMS
