PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

Sunday, January 12, 2014

Turn around and believe that the good news that we are loved is better than we ever dared hope, and that to believe in that good news, to live out of it and toward it, to be in love with that good news, is of all glad things in this world the gladdest thing of all. Amen, and come Lord Jesus. - Frederick Buechner Vision Statement Grace Covenant will be reborn through faith in Christ for the glory of God alone. By submitting to Jesus Christ as the head of the church, our community will find new life in Him who is renewing all creation. Neighbors of every stripe from college students to retired professionals, hardened skeptics to committed believers will fill Grace Covenant to hear the Good News that God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that all who believe in Him may not perish but have eternal life. In response, we will train our desires, thoughts, emotions, and actions towards serving God so that He might transform us into grateful disciples of Jesus Christ who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
- from our 2012 Vision Statement

Hearing Aids and Large-Print Hymnals are available from the ushers. Our worship service is broadcast live on WLES 590 AM and streamed live on its website, http://wles590.com/. We are grateful to have you join in worship with us this morning. We are an historic Presbyterian church with a singular mission: to train grateful disciples of Jesus Christ who are doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with our God. May you be blessed through worship and fellowship this morning.

WORSHIP NOTES
French Romantic composer Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) was the organist of Saint Sulpice, Paris, for 63 years (1870-1933). Widors compositional style was greatly influenced by the organs built by Aristide Cavaill-Coll, who pioneered a new organ that was "symphonic" in style. Widor adopted the multi-movement plan of the orchestral symphony, translated it to the organ, and established the organ symphony as a genre. His ten organ symphonies number among the most famous works of French symphonic organ music at the end of the nineteenth century. Turning to plainchant for melodic material, Widors Symphonie gothique (1895) incorporates the Christmas Day Introit Puer natus est throughout the piece. Todays prelude, the second movement of the Symphonie gothique, is one of Widor's most beloved pieces. Matthew Owens (b. 1971) is Organist and Master of the Choristers of Wells Cathedralperhaps one of the most beautiful of the great English cathedrals. Owens joyful new setting of the traditional English words of The Holly and the Ivy combines dancing cross-rhythms, exuberant melodic writing, and a sparkling organ part. Charles Callahan (b. 1951) is one of America's leading organist-composers. Todays postlude is the final movement from Callahans Suite in G. The work includes four movements, each full of variety and solemnity, that could be performed independently or as a suite.
