in Eng. 1 Structure of English (54 hrs.) CTE Goal The College of Teacher Education (CTE) aims to develop future elementary, secondary and technology school teachers who are imbued with ideals of humanist, with the sense of respect for the advancement of Philippine life and culture and with a genuine desire to facilitate learning and be conveyors of knowledge and values in all disciplines with excellence and global competitiveness. Description of the Course The course follows a structural approach in teaching Basic English grammar. It begins with morphology, the basis on which word structures are formed and grammatical meaning conveyed; and then proceeds by identifying sentence constituents (words, phrases, and clauses) according to grammatical form, function, and position. Scope This course is designed to develop the students ability to use the meta-language of grammar with ease and explain the form, meaning, and use of the elements of grammar. Course Objectives By the end of the course the students must be able to: 1. Identify sentence constituents as belonging to various word classes through examining their forms 2. Analyze the relationships of constituents to each other through grammatical function 3. Identify constituents as occupying specific places within sentences by illustrating grammatical position. Course Requirements 1. Regular class attendance 2. Class involvement 3. Presentation of individual or group activities and exercises 4. Passing grades in major examinations/quizzes 5. Submission of research works in second language teaching Grading System The criteria for grading as are follows: 60% major examinations (prelim, midterm, semi-final, and final) 40% class standing (10% project and presentations, 10% quizzes, 10% class participation, 10% attendance) ____ 100%
