DONN DXSF Suspension Systems for Plasterboard Ceilings

The USG DONN DX Screw Fix range represents a major breakthrough in plasterboard ceiling construction and is another example of USG's excellence in innovation and system engineering. The USG DONN DX Screw Fix range is a pre-engineered ceiling suspension system created to reduce the design and installation difficulties associated with plasterboard ceilings. Flat Plasterboard Ceilings The pre-engineered components of the USG DONN DX Screw Fix range can be quickly connected to form attractive, rigid plasterboard ceilings. The system eliminates the labourintensive practice of connecting furring profile to channel profile. In contrast to conventional plasterboard suspension systems, the USG main tees with pre-indexed cross tee hole locations significantly reduce time spent measuring cross member locations. Transitions No other suspension system gives you the flexibility to make easy transitions from soffits, flat to curved plasterboard ceilings. Transitions from plasterboard to acoustical ceilings are also easily accomplished. Additional Information This technical brochure will guide you through the details of the USG DONN DX Screw Fix range. Accessory selector
The following information will help you select and use the appropriate accessories. Many of the accessories are multifunctional. Transitions from soffits, curved, or flat surfaces can be easier with the use of accessories. DGTC-90 / Transition Clip DGTC-90 / Transition Clip / Field Modified

The Transition Clip securely joins two tier grid components, regardless of face width, at a 90 angle. Bend down tabs secure the clip to the grid. Screws are required to provide a structural connection.

The Transition Clip has a slotted bend line to facilitate connecting grid members that are not in line.

DGSC-180 / Splice Clip

DGSC-180 / Splice Clip

The primary purpose of the Splice Clip is to join two field cut to length in-line main tees, either straight or curved.

Another common use of the Splice Clip is joining two grid tees that are intersecting off module, such as a utility opening. The link joining the bend down tabs on the clip is cut allowing it to be folded on the slotted bend line.

DGC4 / DGC6 / DGC8 / Compsso Clips

Three Compsso Trim Clips are available for DXSF to match 100mm, 150mm, or 200mm Compsso trim. These clips are suitable for varying thicknesses of plasterboard - see USG Technical Department for details. The two portions of the clip are pivoted to accommodate Compsso Trim DGTC-90 at any angle in relation to the grid. Transition Clip

The USG DONN DX Screw Fix suspension system is the best choice for designing and building soffits. Soffits can now be built at a much lower cost than with metal stud construction. Soffit suspension system components The soffit suspension system components are identical to the components used in flat surface areas. Soffit notes In some instances, rigid hangers, bracing, and grid components have been omitted or truncated for clarity. For additional information, please contact technical services. When constructing soffits, bracing of the plasterboard suspension and/or additional rigid hangers may be necessary to ensure stability and structural performance during and after plasterboard attachment. The maximum vertical soffit height is 1200mm with cross tees spaced 600mm on centre. Intermediate cross tees are not necessary when soffit dimensions do not exceed 600mm. When used in soffit construction, all Transition Clips are to have a minimum of 4 screws for attachment.

Frequently asked questions

1. What makes the DXSF system so fast to install compared with traditional furring systems? The system is based around the DONN DX exposed grid system which is acknowledged worldwide as the fastest installing grid available due to the DX clip. DXSF systems have all holes pre punched to take cross tees, therefore all setting out of components is measured and controlled by the holes. Once initial set out is established, everything else is automatic. In addition, the cross tees connect by a simple push fit action so there are no wires or clips needed to connect main runners and cross tees. This makes installation and progress significantly faster, with whole ceiling areas being gridded out without interruption, prior to fitting of boards. 2. Can DXSF systems be used in fire protecting ceiling constructions? Yes. Whilst we cannot cover every possible circumstance with DXSF systems, testing has been carried out at Warrington Fire Research in conjunction with various boards to provide 1 hour structural fire protection in accordance with BS 476: pt 23. Please consult USG Technical Services for full details of these tests.

3. How can DXSF systems accommodate the size variation and tolerance of boards? Gypsum boards can be supplied up to 6mm under the specified length. DXSF grid is manufactured to much tighter tolerances, therefore there is potential for a mismatch at some point. In the worst case, with boards on bottom tolerance and assuming an 1800mm long board, there would be a problem fixing the end of the board into the tee after three lengths of boards are installed, or every 5.4m. The simple solution to this is to cut the board back to the centre line of the previous cross tee and use this as a new datum line. There will be very little extra material wastage and the time taken to cut the board is much less than having to readjust furring channels to accommodate the intolerance of board sizes, meaning installation time is still reduced. Of course where the boards are not up to the maximum tolerance, this equation is reduced accordingly. For example, if the boards were supplied 3mm under size, this action would be required only after every six board lengths, or every 10.8m.

14

?
4. Do boards need to be installed to line through with cross tees and main runners? No. Try to think of the DXSF grid as having the benefits of an exposed grid in respect of installation speed with the benefits of a metal furring system in respect of versatility. Board fixings should be as recommended by the board supplier and are the same for the DXSF system as they would be for a metal furring system. Typically, an 1800 x 900mm board has lines of fixings along its length at 450mm centres. The DXSF system allows cross tees to be installed at 450mm centres to take these fixings. All fixings are into the cross tees; there is no need to fix into the main tees, therefore board edges do not need to line up along the DXSF main runners. Likewise a 2400x1200mm board is installed typically with lines of fixings at 600mm along length. The DXSF system can also allow for cross tees at 600mm centres thus satisfying this. Again the board edges do not need to line up with the main runners. However, if this is a requirement for some reason by the board supplier, this can obviously be accommodated with this grid layout. 5. Can DXSF systems be used to create plasterboard borders with exposed grid ceilings? Yes. As the DXSF system is based around the use of the DX clip, all clips and cross tee holes are identical to our DONN DX24 and DX15 exposed grid systems. This therefore makes the creation of plasterboard borders very easy indeed with the DXSF grid simply splicing to the DX24 or DX15 grid automatically. Details of these junctions are covered on page 11 of this brochure. 6. Can DXSF systems accommodate a change in direction (for example the turn of a corridor or an L shaped room) Yes. Using the accessories available with the system (DGSC-180) it is very simple to splice a tee at 90, or indeed any angle, to allow changes in direction of the main runners. Details of this are covered on page 10 of this brochure. 7. What is the maximum recommended spanning distance from a main tee to the wall channels when setting out? The first main runner parallel to the wall should be no more than 600mm from the wall. The first hanger on the main runner should be no more than 450mm from the perimeter.

8. Is there a benefit in cost or time using 1800 x 900mm boards over 2400 x1200mm plasterboards? The size of board to be used may be dependent upon a number of factors, none of which are dictated by the DXSF systems. DXSF systems can accommodate both board sizes equally well and the installation of the DXSF system is effectively the same either way. If a particular board recommends fixings to be at 600mm centres rather than 450mm centres, this would result in DXSF cross tees being installed at 600mm centres, thus resulting in a saving in terms of material and cost. 9. Can DXSF systems be installed vertically? Is there a maximum vertical elevation recommended? Yes. Using the accessories available with the system (DGTC-90) a vertical junction can be created. This is designed to create and construct bulkhead details quickly and with the minimum of fuss. Details of this are covered on pages 12 and 13 of this brochure. It should be noted however that DXSF systems are intended to be used as a ceiling system and should not be used as a wall lining, therefore the maximum vertical elevation should be limited. This will vary depending upon individual circumstances. Please contact USG Technical Services to discuss. 10. Can DXSF systems be used in an external application, i.e. under canopies? No. Whilst DXSF systems are manufactured from Hot Dipped Galvanised steel, they are designed to be used in internal applications only. 11. What is the maximum board weight that can be carried by DXSF systems? Can DXSF systems take 2 layers of board? The maximum load bearing capability of DXSF systems is dictated by the installation configuration but uniformly distributed loads of up to 39.7 kg/m can be carried by DXSF systems. More information on this is contained in the specific system pages of this brochure. Please contact USG Technical Services to discuss high loading applications. 12. Can DXSF systems be suspended on wire hangers? The recommended method of suspension for DXSF systems is to use a rigid HDG angle section. This is primarily to provide vertical resistance when screw fixing boards up to the grid. Wire hangers would not provide the vertical resistance required to fix the boards and are therefore not recommended.

13. Can DXSF systems incorporate lighting? Yes. Modular recessed lights can be easily supported on the bulb of the DXSF tees. Using the accessories available with the system (DGSC-180) it is very simple to splice a tee at 90 to provide a framework for the light fitting.

14. Can DXSF systems be adjusted once installed? One of the advantages of DXSF systems is the use of the DONN DX clip which allows the cross tees to be demounted and removed from the installation without the need for cutting or specialist tools. If the installation needs to be adjusted for any reason then this feature allows demountability and reconnection as required. 15. What warranty is offered on ceilings incorporating DXSF systems? USG is only able to offer a warranty on the materials and products manufactured and supplied by USG, therefore a system warranty including the board and finish is not possible. USG will offer a limited product warranty of up to 10 years on the DXSF system, however, which will be based upon the circumstances of the individual project. Please contact USG customer services to discuss.

16. Why should we use DXSF systems instead of traditional Metal Furring? USG believes that the use of DONN DXSF systems can greatly reduce installation time over traditional systems in many different project applications. DONN DXSF systems offer these advantages of speed and simplicity in particular on projects where smaller rooms, corridors and short spans are prominent, i.e. Apartments, Housing, Student Accommodation, Schools, Hospitals and many more. The DONN DX clip allows fast and accurate installation without the labour intensive practice of connecting furring sections to channels and with fewer components required to complete an installation. No other system offers the flexibility to create bulkheads, upstands and transitions from plasterboard to acoustical ceilings quickly, easily and with standard components. ISSUE 3, July 2008
