NUMERICAL
CENTRALIZED
BUSBAR PROTECTION
RELAY

APPLICATION

GRB100 is a numerical low impedance
differential relay for busbar protection.
The relay can be linked with a local PC or a
remote PC through a communication port
located on the front and rear of the relay.

GRB100 provides the following features.
Percentage restraint characteristic to
ensures stability against external fault
arising from CT errors
Countermeasure for CT saturation
caused by d.c. offset current
High sensitivity, high speed operation
(less than 1 cycle)
Circuit breaker failure protection
(option)
Independent fault detection element
(option)
Centralized installation
Easy extension for future feeders
(Up to 32 feeders)
Automatic monitoring
Menu-driven human interfaces
Communication interface
(IEC 60870-5-103)
Metering and recording of all feeders

GRB100 can be applied for various busbar
systems
Single busbar
Double busbar
One and a half busbar
Four buscoupler busbar
Ring busbar
Busbar with transfer bus

GRB100 has Central Unit (CU) and Bay Unit
(BU) to allow centralized installation.
The central unit performs protection
calculations, such as differential calculation,
scheme logic processing, recording, relay
setting and display. The bay unit is a terminal to
acquire analog data from each CT and convert
this to digital data, for transmission to the
central unit through optical cable. It also
receives the trip command from the central unit
and issues this trip command to the circuit
breaker.
The centralized installation is shown in Figure
1.

- Two channels (feeders) are available for one BU.

GRB100 provides the following protection
schemes.
Busbar protection
Circuit breaker failure protection (Option)

The busbar protection contains of two current
differential elements.
a) Check zone element to detect fault on any
busbar.
b) Discriminating zone element to discriminate
the faulty busbar.

Applying these two elements, GRB100 offers
very reliable protection for various types of
busbar systems.

Figure 2 shows a typical application to a double
busbar system. DIFCH is the check zone
element which covers all busbars. DIFZA and
DIFZB are the discriminating zone elements for
busbars A and B respectively.

The undervoltage elements UVSFA, UVSFB,
UVGFA, and UVGFB are provided for each
busbar as fault detection elements (optional). In
this application, a faulty busbar is detected by
the operations of check zone element, the
discriminating zone element and undervoltage
elements.
A CT or CT secondary circuit failure does not
cause false operation in this system.

RELAY FUNCTIONS

Check Zone and Discriminating
Zone Elements
The check zone element (DIFCH) and
discriminating zone elements (DIFZA - DIFZD)
are based on the current differential principle
and have a normal differential characteristic for
the small current region and a percentage
restraint characteristic for the large current
region as shown in Figure 3.

CT saturation in external faults is a serious
problem for busbar protection. GRB100
overcomes the CT saturation problem by using
the CT saturation detection function. When an
external fault occurs, a very large erroneous
current may be caused by CT saturation.
However, once the CT saturates, there is a
short period of several milliseconds of non-
saturation between the saturation periods in a
cycle. By detecting this non-saturation period,
the current differential element can be blocked
to prevent false operation arising from CT
saturation.
Figure 4 shows the inclusive block diagram of
the current differential element.
Figure 5 shows the scheme logic with check
zone, discriminating zone and fault detector
element in the double busbar system.

Breaker Failure Protection
(option)
When an overcurrent element remains in
operation after a tripping signal is given to a
breaker, the breaker is judged to have failed, and
a 2 stage CBF sequence is initiated. The first
stage issues a re-trip command to the breakers.
If this also fails then the command to backtrip
adjacent breakers is given. The overcurrent
element with high-speed reset time is used.
GRB100 has two kinds of timer for Breaker
Failure Protection. One timer is used re-trip,
Another timer is used CBF trip.

Fault Detector (option)
GRB100 can enhance security against false
tripping due to a failure in CT or CT secondary
circuits by the provision of a fault detector in the
form of a check relay with circuits that are
independent from other circuits:

The fault detector incorporates the following two
fault detection elements.

Undervoltage element for earth fault
detection
Undervoltage element for phase fault
detection
Undervoltage change detection element
for Circuit breaker failure protection

Current Transformer Requirements

The GRB100 does not require the use of
dedicated CTs nor the use of CTs with an
identical ratio. The GRB100 can share the CTs
with other protections and the different ratios are
adjusted by setting.
The general CT requirements are set for the
through-fault stability which comes up when any
CTs saturate under very large through-fault
currents. To ensure correct operation of the
GRB100 for such through-fault currents, the
factor Ks of each CT is required to satisfy the
following conditions:
Ks 1 when Tc 140ms
where,
Ks = ratio of CT knee point voltage to CT
secondary probable voltage under the
maximum through-fault current
= Vk / {(R
CT
+ R
L
+ R
B
+ R
O
)(I
F
max / CT
ratio)}
Tc = d.c. time constant of primary circuit
Vk = knee point voltage of CT
R
CT
= resistance of CT

secondary

winding
R
L
= loop resistance of cable between CT and
relay
R
B
= ohmic load of GRB100 bay unit (i.e. 0.1
ohm for 1A rating and 0.012 ohm for 5A
rating)
R
O
= ohmic load of other series-connected
relays (if any)
I
F
max = maximum through-fault current
For example, if the following parameters are
given:
Vk = 800 V, CT ratio = 1,200/1, R
CT
= 5.0 ohm,
R
L
= 3.0 ohm, R
B
= 0.1 ohm,
R
O
= 0 ohm (i.e. no series-connected relays)
and I
F
max = 40kA
then the factor Ks is calculated as:
Ks = 800/{(5.0 + 3.0 + 0.1)(40,000/1,200) }
= 800/270
= 3.0
This shows that the GRB100 operates correctly
for all the faults under the condition that the d.c.
time constant of the primary circuit is less than
140ms.

METERING AND RECORDING

Metering
The following items of power system data are
constantly measured and displayed on the LCD,
local PC, and remote PC:
Currents (phase, phase to phase,
symmetrical components)
Differential current
Voltages (phase, phase to phase,
symmetrical components)
Frequency

Currents, voltages and differential current are
indicated as primary or secondary values.

Event Record
The most recent 96 time-tagged events are
stored. Events recorded are as follows.
Tripping
Alarms
Change of binary input signal
Change of relay setting
Relay failure

Fault Record
A relay trip initiates fault recording. Time-tagged
fault data can be stored for the 8 most recent
faults. Fault record items are as follows.
- Date and time
- Faulted phase
- Tripping mode
- Current and voltage data in pre-fault and post-
fault (phase, phase to phase, symmetrical
components)

Disturbance Record
The relay can record up to 32 analog signals and
32 binary signals. The disturbance recorder is
initiated by operation of the current differential
element or relay tripping.

In respect to analog data, the three-phase
voltages and currents are recorded.

Pre-fault recording time is fixed at 300 ms, and
post-fault recording time can be set from 100 ms
to 500 ms. The maximum number of stored

records depends on the post-fault recording time.
In the case of a post-fault recording time of
500ms, up to 3 disturbance records can be
stored. The recorded number of the recorded
data is displayed on the LCD.
The recording time and maximum number of
stored records can be extended by adding an
optional memory device.

Calendar and Time
The calendar and a time are provided for the
time-tagging of recorded data. Synchronization
with GPS (Global Positioning system) is
achieved via the IRIG-B port or linking with the
Relay Setting and Monitoring system (RSM) via a
rear mounted RS485 terminal.
