Presidents Letter:
Greetings and Happy New Year! The Guild kicks off the New Year with Jim Sobels solo exhibit at CCAS! Dare to be Different, New Directions New Challenges will run from January 3, to January 30, 2014, and will be a retrospective of his work. His exhibit will include sculpture/art in stone, clay, metal, found objects, wood, mixed media, apoxy, assemblage-collage, painting, and digital design that encompasses a broad spectrum of emotions, themes, and ideas. The Gala Reception will be Friday, January 10, 2014 from 5 7 PM. Please join us at the reception to celebrate Jim and his marvelous art! Make a night of it and enjoy one of the many fabulous Cape Coral restaurants after the exhibit. A simulated live tour can be found on Jims web site at the conclusion of the exhibit: www.sculpturebysobel.com. We head into the New Year with a brand new approach to critiquing our work. As you know, after the standards vote in November, a group formed to explore our options moving forward. The group includes: Sue Archer, Louis Ford, Angela Aradia, Al Liccardi, Jacqui Smith, Kathy Erickson, Tania Begg, Alice Melzer, Toni Ory, Trudy Edlebeck, Alex Chung, Gloria Winer, and Nancy Giffin. They have already spent a great deal of time and effort, and are taking this task extremely seriously. One of the main developments has been to establish a voluntary peer review process where members can bring in pieces to be reviewed and discussed. This process will have clearly-defined and transparent parameters, and will be designed to provide constructive criticism and growth for participating artists. It will also help our members decide which pieces to enter into exhibits, if they are interested in exhibiting. We have conducted a mock review, which was very successful, and we are all encouraged that this process will work well. A Peer Review Committee has formed out of this group, and Sue Archer and Louis Ford have agreed to Co-Chair. The Board of Directors and I are extremely pleased with the progress we are making. Id like to thank Jacqui Smith for her tireless efforts and commitment to improve the old standards process and now the new peer review process. I've heard from many members who commend her on the excellent job shes done to make them feel prepared and calm as they approached prior standards reviews. Many of these people voted to keep the old standards process in tack specifically because Jacqui made their experience such a positive one! That is a great testament to her as standards Chair, and we are so grateful to her for helping us down this path that we are now on. I'm appreciative of the fact that she immediately volunteered to work towards an improved method of quality control and for remaining on the Peer Review Committee! Her presence and participation provide important continuity and background information that is much needed. Her contributions to the Guild have been great and are continuing into the future. Thank you so much, Jacqui! We will conduct our first peer review at the January business meeting on Saturday, January 18. We already have four people for this peer review, and we will be conducting another peer review in March. If you are interested in participating, please contact Sue Archer or Louis Ford. The number of people who will be critiqued will be limited to four in order to provide the time necessary to fully evaluate their pieces. Each person will be limited to three pieces. Also at the January meeting we will be breaking into small groups according to media to discuss what factors and guidelines should be used to address each media. I hope we will have a strong showing of support for this endeavor, and I agree with Louis when he predicts that people will be vying for an opportunity to have their work critiqued once this system is up-and-running and they see how educational and informative it can be. Many thanks to Sue and Louis, as well as the entire committee, for their commitment and dedication to this effort! Our Webmaster, Nancy Giffin, has been working on our website, which looks fabulous! Our new web address is: www.swflfinecraftguild.org. Nancy is continually updating the site. If you have any suggestions, please let her know. She has also created a new email address for the Guild: [email protected]. If you would like photos of your art work posted on the web site, please send them to Nancy. Please join me in thanking Nancy for all of her hard work on the site! Also, Nancy has volunteered to fill the spot on the VP Committee left vacant when Dee Cooper accepted the Treasurer position AND has joined the Peer Review Committee! Your efforts are greatly appreciated, Nancy! We enjoyed another fun-filled Dirty Santa Gift Exchange at our December meeting, which was well-attended by Guild members, guests, and new members! Thank you to all who came and contributed to the refreshment table and the gift e xchange. Im already looking forward to next years party! Warmest wishes to you and your families for a happy and prosperous New Year, Lorraine

THE GUILDS EXHIBIT AT THE SWFL COMMUNITY FOUNDATION: The Guilds Exhibit at the SWFL Community Foundation continues through January. The reception on November 22 was well attended and well received. The staff at the Foundation repeatedly commented on how impressed they were at the quality of our art work. When your work sells, you will be notified, and you may replace it at any time; just ask for Jacqueline Ehlers when you drop off your replacement piece(s). Removal for this exhibit is Thursday, January 30 from 9 AM 12 Noon. Many thanks to the Art Council and the Community Foundation for this excellent exhibit opportunity! CRAFT BASH: This season's Craft Bash will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2014, from 9 AM - 4 PM, and the workshops will be: Silversmithing, Fused Glass, Raku and Horsehair Firings, Weaving, Mosaics, Bead Weaving, Nantucket Baskets, Doll Making, and Stained Glass. Trudy Sampson will give a Stone Sculpture demo during the lunch hour, which will be a BYO brown bag lunch. Guild members and CCAS students receive discounts on workshops. Reserve your spot today by calling 574-0802. Workshops fill up fast so act quickly! There will be another raffle of art work made by Guild members. We are in need of donations of art work for the raffle. The raffle will benefit our scholarship fund! Flyers have been distributed. Please use them to invite as many people as you can. There is a post on Facebook about Craft Bash and as it gets closer, there will be a Facebook event created. Please share both of these to help spread the word. It just takes two quick clicks to share an event or a post and it helps tremendously to get the word out. We are still in need of two people to help with parking. Please let June Bennett know if you can help. Teachers, please have your sample projects and supply lists to Cher by December 30. MEMBERSHIP UPDATE: The Guild now has 92 members! That is the largest number we have had in recent years! Anna Marie Jacobi tells us that many years ago we had 128 members, most of whom were fiber artists. Our goal now is to break that record in 2014! We can do it if everyone works hard and keeps recruiting in the forefront of our minds! Regularly priced membership

renewals of $35 and $50 for individual and family memberships respectively, are due on or before January 1, 2014. You may mail your check to Kathy Erickson at any time: P.O. Box 511602, Punta Gorda, FL 33951. You will need your 2014 membership cards to enter Coconut Point as well as Guild and Art Council shows. Kathy will give you your membership cards at Guild meetings. Remember to keep your Yearbooks up-to-date by adding contact information for new members as they are published in the Newsletters. CO-OP ART GALLERY UPDATE: January Receiving is Monday, January 13 from 10 AM 1 PM, and the Reception is Friday, January 17 from 5 7 PM. Effective January 6, the Gallery will be closed on Mondays. This will make the scheduling of gallery sitters easier, it will provide opportunities for meetings to be held, and it will allow more time for receivings, installations, and rearranging the Gallery as refreshed items come in. The Guilds November commission on sales was $1,742.40! Congratulations to everyone who sold and who contributed to this total. While December sales figures will not be finalized before this newsletter is published, sales are well ahead of December, 2013! Remember, in order to participate in the Gallery, you must be a member of the Guild for three months and you must attend two business meetings. If you have any questions about the Gallery, you may contact our Art Council Delegate, Naldyne Light. ART COUNCIL UPDATE: The January Art Council meeting will include an important Workshop on Goals and Planning, led by Anne Dalton, Esq. The meeting will be held on January 14, 2014 at Keiser University at the Forum on Colonial Blvd. in Ft. Myers, and will be hosted by Arts of the Inland. Their meeting starts at 9:30 with a social half hour and business meeting from 10 11 AM, after which the Art Council meeting will begin. It will be an important meeting since the first goal of the Officers is to find a permanent place for the Co-op Gallery and for the Art Council. As always, Guild members are encouraged to attend. We all will benefit if the Art Council finds a permanent home, and we all should help in any way we can. Lunch will be provided by the Art Council!! METAL DISPLAY STANDS: The metal artist who created Louis Fords display stands is Byron Wood of Metalsmith Designs, Inc.: 12581 Metro Parkway #17, Fort Myers, FL 33966; Email: [email protected]; www.metalsmithdesigns.com; www.byronmwood.com. Phone: 239-936-6720; Fax: 239-561-0286; Cell: 239633-3469; It is best to call ahead and make an appointment, but feel free to stop in any time as you may be able to catch him. He will make custom display stands for your work at a reasonable cost, and will make one at a time, or a larger number. Thank you, Louis, for sharing this information with us! DING DARLING UPCYCLE ART FESTIVAL: Ding Darlings Upcycle Art Festival will hold a scaled-down upcycle event on April 16, 2014. Twenty-five artists will display their work in the nature center with artwork for sale, and there will be an undetermined number of artists with one piece on display and eligible for awards and

prizes. Set-up and the reception will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2014. The application/jurying fee is $30, with 10% of sales to be donated to Ding Darling. All booths and displays will be inside or under cover on the outside of the main building. Acceptance in the art show will be on a first-come-first-served basis under the guidelines of the show (60% recycled art materials.) The art show will be a trial for an upscale upcycle art show in 2015. If you are interested, please contact our Ding Darling Chair, Toni Ory. CCAS GUILD CASE: The Guilds display case is located in Building 2 of CCAS. CCAS retains 30% of the sales, so work should be priced accordingly. Contact Jeanne Kostrub to reserve your spot. The gallery hosts a reception every month during season, and the January reception will be held on Monday, January 13 from 4:00 6:30 PM. This month gallery alumni artists return with their work. Come join the celebration! ALLIANCE FOR THE ARTS: We will be partnering with the Alliance for a day of art demos on Saturday, March 15, 2014! More details will be distributed soon, but we are excited about this endeavor. Members who volunteer to demo will be able to sell their work at the same time. This will be held in conjunction with the Alliances Green Market, so there will be a large number of people in attendance. We are hoping to have our business meeting after the event on the Alliance grounds in the Edwards Building. We need to think of a good name for this event. Some initial thoughts are Made by Hand and The Art of Fine Craft. Please put your creative thinking caps on! Many thanks to Rose Young, our Alliance Chair, for her hard work in this regard. VOLUNTEER UPDATE: Please consider the following list carefully, and remember that a spouse or family member can be your stand-in for volunteering! If your family member has any of the qualifications for or interest in any of these positions, we would appreciate their help. Volunteer opportunities are constantly changing, so be sure to discuss them with Phyllis Rieser, if you have any questions. In addition to the Alliance event above, the volunteer positions currently available are: Craft Bash 2014: We still need people to help on the day of Craft Bash with parking control. There are four entrances that need to be manned. Please let June Bennett know if you can help. Its a fun day and a great way to get your volunteering in for 2014. Craft Bash is scheduled for Sunday, January 26, 2014 from 9 AM 4PM. We also need donations of art work for the raffle that will benefit our scholarship fund!!! Recruiting Committee: Our Recruiting Chair, Edie Limbright, has two people on her Committee now! Petra Kaiser and Zdenka Fiala have joined the Committee, and will work with Edie on this important job. Please be on the lookout for potential new members for the Guild. Pick up business cards and/or email addresses for people you think are good candidates, and give the information to Edie so she can contact them. Remember, we can ALL help with this effort, and many of you have recruited new members recently. THANK YOU for that, and keep up the good work. We should all be constantly on the look-out for new members, whether they be friends, fellow students, fellow sitters at Coconut Point, neighbors, and for our teachers, students in your classes. If you are interested in joining the Committee, contact Edie. Advertising Chair and Committee: The Board has developed an advertising brochure as a tool to assist in obtaining sponsors and advertisers. This brochure will be finalized and distributed to all members shortly. We can begin this process even before we have an Advertising Committee in place if each of us makes an effort. The brochure will be completed soon and will be distributed to all members. Please help with this important job! The Advertising Committee will use the phone and/or email to solicit ads for our web site and newsletter. The membership could be instrumental in providing ideas for potential advertisers. We have a flyer that could be utilized which outlines the costs of our ads. Once

Judge: Barbara Snyderman CCMI FOOD DRIVES: Collecting food and other supplies for the homeless and hungry is an important aspect of our charitable status, and is extremely important for our community. You may visit CCMIs web site for ideas of food and other items to donate: www.ccmileecounty.com. You may also contact Sandi Krym, our Community Outreach Chair. We need to move away from the idea that we simply clean out our pantries looking for expired items. If you would not eat it, please do not donate it! When you are shopping at the grocery store or warehouse store, spend a few extra dollars to buy an item or two that is really needed: a large box of cereal, a bag of rice, or cans of beans would go a long way towards helping those in need. Pet food is also a great thing to donate since helping people keep their pets is one of the many fantastic services that CCMI provides our community. We collect food at every Guild meeting! Please help. Lets make each months donations even bigger than the last! LONG TERM PLANNING: Please be thinking ahead, as we have the following Guild exhibits coming up in the future: Visual Arts Center (VAC), Goff Gallery, Punta Gorda, January, 2015 (no theme yet); Cape Coral Arts Studio (CCAS) February, 2015 (no theme yet); Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center (SBDAC) July, 2015 (no theme yet).

Please like both the VAC and SBDAC on Facebook. We are always looking for exhibit venues and themes. If you have any thoughts, please share them with Lorraine Capps or a member of the VP Committee. We will also have the next Art Council Spring Show open to all Guild members in February of 2016. Our eligible winners from our exhibits will participate in the Councils Winners Circle Show in March of 2015. Pertinent dates for these exhibits can be found in the Art Council newsletters, and will be published here as they get closer. Check the Art Councils web site, newsletters, and brochure for other art leagues exhibits that are open to all Art Council members. FEBRUARY MEETING CHANGE: Our February meetings will be held on the SECOND Saturday of February: Saturday, February 8, 2014. The Board meeting will be held at 10:30 AM, and the Business meeting will be at 12:30. Mark your calendars! Anne Dalton, Esq. will be speaking after our Business meeting on Artistic Integrity and the Law, the notion that artists should receive residuals for their work when it re-sells similar to the royalties that writers receive when their work re-sells. Come learn about this and other artistic integrity protections for your work in a return workshop with Anne, a creative arts attorney and Patron of the Guild who has been representing artists, photographers and others for 35 years. You wont want to miss this informative and interesting presentation!

THIS SEASONS REMAINING GUILD EXHIBITS: Please plan for our remaining exhibits of the season!

LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST: Congratulations to Scamp and Skitter Krym for making the pages of the 2014 Bad Cat Calendar! Their adorable photo is on Friday, March 28 and is reproduced below. How cute are they? Sandi and Phil have no idea who Dave and Jessica are, since the captions are added by the publisher. These are two very large and in-charge boys!
