SCIENCE CLUB PROGRAMME

South Peninsula High schools science club is about discovering new things, exploring the world around us and experimenting with the world around us.

Our vision:
Is to see learners grow and develop not only with an analytical approach to things or tasks but also to observe things around them and ask questions, research and build knowledge on topics of interest. Inquisitive minds create our future Shandr Dreyer The science club operates as a real society involving much student input and it consists of a body of members who ensure the successful running thereof. Term 4 The annual visit to the aquarium will take place New developments Our school has recently rebuilt many of our old prefabricated classrooms and one of them is now our new and improved Civil Engineering Trac Lab.

The Visit to the Planetarium and the Iziko Museum Term 1 Getting started again was the feel to the first term for the co-ordinators and members of the board. Between settling in and reminiscing about the long vacation wed all just come from, we managed to organise and plan our first outing successfully. Students had a tour of the museum and we also experienced what taxidermy is about. Taxidermy is where actual sculptures of animals are made either with parts of its preserved body or artificially made hair, eyes, teeth, etc. Animals made by a taxidermist completely resemble the real life version of the animal, making it much more effective. We also watched a lesson inside the planetarium and learnt something new about the stars around us and how to locate them.

The visit to the MTN Science Centre Term 2

Term two has come and it has gone and for the Science Club it has been a good term as we stabilised the plans for the year. We also reflected on the different aspects surrounding our second excursion. For this term the co-ordinators decided to take the students to the MTN Science Centre in Century City Canal Walk. As with many of the current societies at our school, a lot of time, effort and hard work go into maintaining an evergrowing society. We spent some time planning, debating and finally deciding when, where and how. Our choice was the Science Centre. Our excursion took place on the 22 June 2009.On Monday morning the last money was collected on a first -comefirst served basis, as students requested that payment in that form would be easiest for them as many students were interested in attending the event. There was a set figure for the number of students that could attend. The response from the student body was overwhelming as more than fifty students had come prepared to accompany the Science Club. Personally I can definitely say on behalf of the Science Club body that it was a new learning experience as we now dealt with certain aspects of public relations and financial management. In the end 33 students were taken as coordinators stuck to the conditions that were set, in terms of student numbers. We boarded the bus and were off to our destination. On arrival in Canal Walk students were ecstatic and also very well behaved. On arrival at the entrance of the Science Centre we were welcomed by our co-ordinator for the time period we spend there, who gave us the guide to what we would do. The group of students had about a half an hour to explore all the gadgets and mini tasks that were on the floor. The co-ordinator then led us to the practical room where we would now interact with electricity and magnetism. We made an electric motor using a compass wire and a battery.
