Abbé Siéyès was a leader of the Third Estate who advocated for their rights and power against the monarchy in France. He argued that the Third Estate had been "nothing" under the political order but should be "everything". King Louis XVI had his royal title removed by the will of the French people and was tried as "Citizen Capet", which was the name used for him at his trial before he was sent to the guillotine in 1793. Maximilien Robespierre was a key leader during the Reign of Terror in France, executing many opponents, before ultimately being executed himself by his growing list of enemies.
