2009-2010 TECHNOLOGY UPDATE

Bryan Tayman – ext. 22870

Welcome to a new school year! I look forward to working with all of you again this year!

1. STUDENT PASSWORDS:
o Student Password Cards are in your mailbox. Please distribute to students on day one!
o Angela Leese (Lab 140) will still collect signed student handbook pages.
o Password works for: Novell, Wikispaces, Moodle, Compass Learning, Google Docs.

2. PRINTERS and PRINTING:

PRINTING:
o Go into your APPLICATION LAUNCHER and use the SET DEFAULT PRINTER icon.
o Remember you can print to both sides of the paper on the following printers. Just click the
properties button on the print window. You will see settings for 2 sided printing if its available.

 2nd Floor Teachers Only
 2nd Floor Xerox Room
 Lab 239 (Fast Forward Lab)
o You can also Print to the Copiers!
o Print to the “Cute PDF Writer” to covert any print job into a PDF document. Great for
“printing” internet pages, converting word docs for posting on web pages, etc.
o Call helpdesk (20870) or Use helpdesk icon to get new ink for printers.

3. K12 GRADEBOOK-
GRADEBOOK Are you ready to go?
o See Guidance Office (Paula Smith) if classes are missing or incorrect.
o Contact Tayman (22870) or email me if you have questions on how to use it.

4. PHONE SYSTEMS -
o Doug is in charge of all phone systems. Contact him if you need your voicemail or homework
hotline reset. Directions should come from him.

5. WIRELESS COMPUTER NETWORK:

o We are now wireless throughout all the EHMIS. If you have a laptop, you can roam through
building (meetings, copyroom room, workshops, etc.) without ever losing your G drive.
o The name of the wireless network is MSAP. You may need to tell your computer to connect to it
once in a while. The icon to do this is down near the clock icon.
o Brief training session will be provided this afternoon in room 141.
141.

6. CEILING MOUNTED PROJECTORS

o Just about every room of EHMIS now has a ceiling mounted projector! New ceiling mounted
projectors have no sound capabilities at this time – speakers will be getting installed soon.
o Making it work (Desktop Version):
Version) You will need a “Y” splitter and a RGB cord long enough to
reach from computer to wall box. Connect the RGB cord to wall box and one end of the
splitter. Disconnect the RGB cord connecting your monitor to the computer an plug that into
the other end of the splitter. Finally, connect the splitter itself to blue port on the back of your
computer, where the monitor had been connected before.
o Making it work (Laptop
Laptop Version):
Version) You will need a RGB cord long enough to reach from
computer to the wall box. If you have a short cord, throw a small student desk (Request from
Marlene Clark) near the wall box. When your ready to present, just move your wireless laptop
over to the desk and connect the RGB cord. You may need to press the function key and a F#
button (varies depending on laptop model) to get the picture to display.
o Brief training session will be provided this afternoon in room 141. 141.

7. SENIOR TECH AIDES – Stationed in lab 141. They are here to assist teachers and students visiting the
labs and complete projects for staff in additional to completing an online curriculum in Moodle.
o Justin Weaver and Tiffany Mangold

o Lab Sign Out sheet are still online
Be sure sign up for specific times during the day and notify the staff through an MSSTAFF email
should you no longer need the lab time you signed up for.
o Tech Equipment (see below) is also on here.
o Schedules overlap!!
overlap Be careful when requesting time. If someone has time reserved ahead of
you, please email them and work out a solution AHEAD of time. I would say whoever signed it
out first gets priority unless a deal is struck.
o Clean Up Afterwards – Angie is only half time, Shannon is gone. Please clean up after yourself,
clear any paper jams, in printer, and turn of Ceiling Mounted Projectors.
o Sign Out Tayman – Next to Computer Lab link on Building Resources Page is Tech Coach link.

11. MORNING SESSIONS – Get things done and keep ahead of curve! Performance based, not show and
tell! I see three “strands” emerging as I look ahead:
o Main Focus: Choose tech that best supports your curriculum and 21st century skills integration.
o Administrative Requirements: teacher web pages, looking at data to differentiate, and district
initiatives (surveys, etc.)
o Living in a digital world: Current technologies and trends, how to’s, cells phones, etc.

Here is the meeting schedule. I will alternate each week between groups. I will start second cycle.
o Day 1: Science / Exploratory 1
o Day 2: Math / Exploratory 2
o Day 5: Social Studies / Exploratory 3
o Day 6: Learning Support / LA

I would like to meet in Lab 141 for the tech meetings. I want the first session with me to be a goal setting
session for our group so I blend into what you are doing during that time. I do not want to kill your
current subject area mojo.
