Transcultural or intercultural philosophy had its precursors in diverse thinkers such as Johann Gottfried Herder and Antonio Gramsci. In recent times, Michel Foucault and Emmanuel Levinas explored the concepts of the other, alterity, and difference. Edward Said, Orientalism Derek Parfit, On What Matters, described by Peter Singer as "the most significant work in ethics since Sidgwick's masterpiece was published in 1873".
