Model Question Paper

Sub code:- 06EE44

Answer any five full questions, selecting at least two from each part

PART A

1 a. State and explain Gauss’s law. (6)

b. Derive an expression for ‘E’ for an infinite line charge (7)
c. For equal charges ‘+Q’ coulombs each are placed at the corners of a square. Find the
charge to be placed at the centre of the square such that all the charges are held in
equilibrium. (7)

2 a. Explain the term

(a) Electric potential (6)
b. Find the expression for capacitance of a co-axial cable (7)
c. Calculate the work done in moving a 4 C charge from P1 (1,0,0) to P2 (0,2,0) along
the path y = 2-2x , z=0 in the field (i) E = 5x ax N/m
(ii) E = 5x ax + 5y ay N/m

3. a) Give interpretation of Laplace and Poison’s equation. (6 )

b) Find the potential function and capacitance between two parallel plates using laplace
equation. (7 )
c) Calculate the numerical values for V and rv at a point in free space if
V=(2wy)/ r2 (7 )

4 a) State and explain Biot-savart’s law. (7)

b) Explain scalar and vector magnetic potentials. (6)

c) The magnetic field intensity in a region is H = x ax + 2yz ay – x az , Find current
density at the origin. (7)

PART B

5. a) Define polarization and explain its significance.

b) Obtain expression of inductance of long solenoid or toroid.
c) A solenoid with N1 = 1000, r1 = 1.0 cm and l1 = 50 cm is concentric with a second
coil of N2 = 2000 , r2 = 2.0 cm and l2 = 50 cm. Find the mutual inductance assuming
free space conditions. Assume m to be constant.

6. a) Derive Maxwell’s equation in point and integral form. (7)

b) Explain Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction for both static and dynamic
conditions. (6)
c) For the diagram shown below find voltage drops across each resistor. (7)

7 a) Compare the wave propagation in free space and dielectrics. (8)

b) Define skin effect or depth of penetration (6)
c) A plane wave is propagating in z direction in a non magnetic, non conducting
medium of er =4. Electric field ‘E’ has an RMS value of 2mV\m. Calculate RMS
value of magnetic field H and its direction and its direction and the wavelength at the
frequency of 50Hz. (6)

8 a) Explain the reflection of uniform plane waves at normal incidence. (7)

b) Explain standing wave ratio. (6)
c) A uniform plane wave in air partially reflects from the surface of a material whose
properties are known. Measurements of the electric field in the region in front of
the interface yields a 1.5m spacing between the maxima with the first maximum
occurring 0.75m from the interface. A standing wave ratio of 5 is measured.
Determine the intrinsic impedence of the unknown material. (7)
