Introductory Preface
There is great uncertainty among Bible scholars as to the dates in this period. The dates we have given
here are those found in the margin of many Bibles. They were calculated by Archbishop Ussher, of Armagh,
in AD 1650-1654, and first put into Bibles in 1701. While they are based on the statements of Scripture they
are not a part of the inspired word. James Ussher (1581-1656) was an Irish biblical scholar, who established
a long-accepted chronology for the Old Testament. Of Ussher’s numerous writings the most important is
the Annals of the World (2 vol., 1650-54; trans. 1658). In that work he established his biblical chronology,
with the creation fixed at 4004 BC, a date widely accepted and included in the page margins of many
editions of the Authorized, or King James Version. As a rule the dates given in the margin of our Bibles are
based on his chronology.
The date of creation is stated to be 4004 BC. This date is in great controversy and the debate boils down
to the “Old Universe” or the “Young Universe.” There are those who believe that the Earth is in excess of
three and one half million years old. If this is the case it could be proven. The difference between 3.5 million
and 6,000 years is dramatic and; indeed, makes a great contrast. Before the Moon landing and the first
human walk on the Moon, it was estimated that the Moon would be covered with stellar dust that had
accumulated over 3.5 million years . NASA built the Lunar-Lander with steps to allow the astronaut to step
down onto the surface of the Moon with about 3 feet of this dust. These steps did not go all the way down
to the Moon’s surface and the un-expecting astronaut had to leap down. They found only 3/4 of an inch of
dust on the surface. Using the math that NASA used to estimate three feet of dust would have been
accumulated in 3.5 million years we can gather that the Moon is less than 10,000 years old and most likely
only 6,000 years old as the Bible would teach and Ussher told us in the mid-seventh century.
A simple summary of the years would show the fact of the “Young Earth.” From the creation of man till
the flood (Gen. 1-7) [Everything dates from the creation of Adam. Beyond him all is wrapped in dark and
impenetrable mystery. In order to determine the Length of time from Adam’s creation to the flood we have
only to add the ages of the antediluvian patriarchs--Adam, Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch,
Methuselah, Lamech, Noah – at the births of their first sons, and add to this the age of Shem at the flood,
and we find that it was 1656 years (Gen. 5:3-32; Gen. 7:6).] – 1656. Add to this the number of years from
the deluge till the gracious call of Abram (Gen. 9-12) [We have already seen that it was 1656 years from
the creation of Adam to the flood. Now in order to find how long it was from the flood To the death of Terah,
we must add to the two years from the flood to The birth of Arphaxad, the ages of the patriarchs – Arphaxad,
Salah, Eber, Peleg, Reu, Serug, Nahor – at the births of their first sons and To this the years that Terah
lived, and we have four hundred, twenty-seven years (Gen. 11:10-32).] – 427. Then from the call of Abram
till the law – 430. Then the years from the exodus and the law till the foundation of Solomon’s temple – 479.
The years from the founding of the temple till the destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar – 426. And
lastly th years from Jerusalem’s destruction ‘till Christ’s coming – 586. The total comes to the sum which
is established by Ussher – 4004.

 Dr. Terry Wayne Preslar (1947- )

Dr. Terry Wayne Preslar has pastored First Baptist Church of Mineral Springs, North Carolina for over
30 years. It is his second call with two and one half years having been served at Howie Baptist Church of
Waxhaw, North Carolina. Brother Preslar and his wife are happily married with five children, with the
youngest being eighteen years old and eight grandchildren. He is an old fashion Baptist Preacher with firm
convictions and a passion for souls.
The Editor organized Mineral Springs Baptist Mission late in 1975. Since then Pastor Preslar has worked
in this calling. He works with the “Preaching Mission” of the church, at the rest-home several times each
month and three services each week in the pulpit at First Baptist. Given the occasion he preaches on the
street and in prisons. He teaches Bible College Classes in Monroe in the Gospel Schools of the Bible in
Monroe N.C. and writes Sunday-School material for several classes. He preaches several revival meetings,
speaks in mission revivals and Bible conferences and attends a number of campmeetings each year. He can

people need a preacher...)
