Reflection Letter

The letter provides an overview of the student's work in an English course with three units of assignments. In Unit 1, the student learned job application skills including improving a cover letter and resume. In Unit 2, the student researched and wrote a recommendation report for a classmate's potential job opportunities. This helped develop research and decision making abilities. In Unit 3, the student independently created an informational brochure for the American Red Cross, though challenges arose with time management and limited space. Overall the course helped business and professional writing skills, though some assignments could still be improved.

2320 P.O. Box 6050 Fargo, ND 58108-6050 Dear Assessment Readers, The following reflection letter is designed to give a brief overview of my work while taking English 320: Business and Professional Writing during the fall semester, 2013. The semester was broken down into three units with associated assignments, which will be explained below. UNIT 1: Job Application The primary focus of this unit was to learn how to successfully search and apply for a potential job. I found these tasks to be quite helpful and was able to use the knowledge gained from these assignments toward improving and updating my current cover letter and resume. We were required to create several documents to include a cover letter, traditional resume, and scannable resume. While these assignments went well overall, I would still like to revisit my traditional resume and attempt to rewrite some sections in order to include more relative experience, without increasing the overall length of the document. I found it necessary to remove several pieces of information while remaining cognizant of acceptable standards. UNIT 2: Recommendation Report This unit required us to research and develop a recommendation report regarding three potential job opportunities of a fellow student. This assignment required a large amount of research into not only the other students job selections, but the students themselves. In order to create an effective recommendation report, we needed to learn as much as possible about their personal and professional goals. This was achieved through a questionnaire that allowed us to gain invaluable insight into our clients needs. We then researched each prospective company, along

with the communities in which they were located. We compiled as much pertinent information as we could in order to create a comprehensive and relevant recommendation report along with transmittal letter. This assignment allowed me to further develop my research abilities, while expanding on my ability to make more informed decisions in the future regarding my personal and professional life. UNIT 3: Independent Project This unit entailed selecting a project of our choosing, drafting a proposal for the project along with a grading rubric and progress report. The project itself required us to work on our own while utilizing sound time management skills. I chose to create an informational brochure for the American Red Cross directed towards college students in order to help educate them on what the Red Cross does, and how they might be able to help. I found it challenging to include the desired information due to limited space, yet feel I was still able to produce a quality brochure that achieved my goals. I also ran into some scheduling challenges with regards to work, yet was able to make the necessary adjustments to complete the project on time. Upon further review I would strongly consider some formatting and font adjustments to help make the brochure more visually appealing, while making room for additional important information.
