Concept involve
Stereotypes A stereotype is a simplified assumption of a group based on prior assumptions. Stereotyping may not always be negative, such as female drivers are reckless, but it may also be positive, such as women are soft-hearted. However, stereotypes may lead to faulty beliefs, which then lead to prejudice and discrimination. People stereotype one another, based on a conceptual perception that they have once came across. In order to make sense of the world, it is important to sort information into categories. But, once it is formed, categories are the basis for normal prejudgment and it is difficult to avoid. This process of categorization applies to the social world as well, as we sort people into groups based on factors such as, sex, gender and age. In this situation where Hui Yong (the new student) came in class for the very first time, he stereotyped the girls as committed, hardworking girls. This is because, people make assumptions of females by being hard working and smart. So, Hui Yong, like everybody else, thinks that the girls are excellent people to work with. Such assumptions and beliefs, set an early age, are often the hardest to shake. Therefore they all started hanging out together, and became good friends. But, what Hui Yong did not know was that, not all girls are smart and hard working. In fact, the girls gave him 1001 reasons on why they did not finish the assignment. This made Hui Yong rage in anger. Because Hui Yong had already made a stereotype of these girls to be hard working girls, therefore he ignores all of the things that do not make them hard working. Which then leads to, focusing only to the time when he sees them being hard working and thus, prove that the assumptions were true. First impression First impression is a very important element when meeting with new people. Especially between attractive people and less attractive people. This is because people always assume that what is beautiful is good. They expect people who are beautiful and attractive more interesting, fun to be with, and socially skilled than less attractive people. Physical appearance is very important when meeting strangers. It is said that physical beauty has been shown to have a pervasive influence on our perceptions and evaluations of other people. Most people understand that you cant judge a book by its cover, but when you have only a few minutes to introduce yourself to someone, it is vital that the cover accurately represents the lie within. A first impression does not tell a persons whole life story, but is the only information a stranger has to judge their early feelings towards a person. First impressions are like filters, and thats how people form an image of you. Based on a situation like Hui Yongs, he took the initial information of the girls. By how they talked, body language and also how they responded to each other. Next, based on the initial information that he already has about the girls, he formed an impression of what the girls are like and how they would behave in the future. According to this situation, the girls seemed easy to talk with, very outgoing and fun. Finally, Hui Yong has made a filter of these girls. The problem with filtering initial information is that, people only seek

information that is consistent with their first impression therefore will ignore behaviors that do not fit their first impression of you. Perseverance effect Perseverance effect is an effect where by people tends to hold on to the newly formed schema. Once a schema is formed, it is hard for the person to change. Therefore, sometimes it may be difficult for people to let go of their schemas. Generally, people tend to cling to initial schema or beliefs even after receiving new information that may be contradicts or disconfirm their schema or beliefs. In the video, the new foreign student (Hui Yong) form a schema after meeting the three girls, Karen, Felicia and Sofia which is known as first impression. Then, he stereotyped the girls as committed, hardworking girls. When a stereotype is form, perseverance effect occurs. Hui Yong tends to ignores all of the things that do not make them hard working and committed. He believes in the three girls that they have something more important to do. Confirmation bias Confirmation bias is tendency of people to favor information that confirms their schema, beliefs. In other words, people tend to believe information that support their schema and belief but neglect information that oppose the schema and belief. In the video, Hui Yong believes the three girls will finish the work despite the excuses they made because he has made a schema about the girls. The halo effect The halo effect is a type of cognitive bias in which our overall impression of a person influences how we feel and think about his or her character. Essentially, our overall impression of a person or persons, impacts our evaluations of said persons specific traits. Generally, the halo effect also refers to the tendency for people to rate attractive individuals more favorably for their personality traits or characteristics compared to those who are less attractive. In other words, one positive attribute will cause us to attribute other positive qualities to an individual. In the video, the three girls: Karen, Felicia, and Sofia introduce themselves to the new foreign exchange student, Hui Yong when he enters class on the first day of school. To him, initially, they seem friendly. Moreover, the three girls also capture his attention more than anyone else in class because of their physical features. Delighted to have made some new friends, he starts to form bonds with them and hang out with them often. As weeks pass, the teacher for one of their modules assigns the students a group project. The three girls discuss among each other and invite Hui Yong to join their group, knowing that he is a new student and would probably do all the work. Hui Yong, assuming that the nice classmates he has made friends with have accepted him as one of their own, accepts without a second thought. He thinks that since they have been nice and friendly to him all this while, they would also be responsible and play their part in the project. Therefore, the theory relates to Hui Yong in such a way that he assumes that the three girls would be responsible and hardworking due to the fact that they are relatively more attractive and friendly.

The actor-observer bias The actor-observer bias refers to a tendency to attribute ones own actions to external causes (situational attributions), while attributing other peoples behaviors to internal causes (dispositional attributions). Essentially, people tend to make different attributions depending upon whether they are the actor or observer in a certain situation. For example, in a situation where a person experiences something negative, the individual will often blame the situation whereas when the person experiences something positive, he or she tends to take credit for it. This applies to Hui Yong when it comes to the group project. Due to the unwillingness and uncooperative teammates, he did not receive a good grade for his project. Being the smart student that he is, he finds it unacceptable. He is also upset by the fact that his group members did not do anything to help him. He blames the bad grade on the three girls. Hence, according to the actor-observer bias theory, Hui Yong is making a dispositional attribution towards the failure of his project, which is that the girls are lazy and irresponsible. Counterfactual Thinking Counterfactual thinking refers to imagining different outcomes for an event that has already occurred, which means thinking about an occurrence that might have been. Counterfactual Thinking is usually associated with bad or negative events. In the video, the new foreign exchange student, Hui Yong experience upward counterfactual thinking because the three girls (Karen, Felicia and Sofia) didnt did their work for the assignment. In the end of the video, Hui Yong was frustrated and angry and he flips the table. He thinks that if he didnt team up with the girls, he would finish the assignment earlier. Theory of cognitive dissonance Leon Festinger states that when an attitude is not in keeping with a behavior then there is a dissonance relationship. He also states that a dissonant relationship requires a third consonant element to reduce the degree of dissonance. In the video, Hui Yong, the new foreign student experience dissonance relationship. He wanted to finish the assignment (Cognition) but his teammate, Sofia, Karen and Felicia has not done their part of the assignment so Hui Yong cannot compile and finish the assignment (Dissonant Element). In this case, Hui Yong didnt have a consonant element to reduce the degree of dissonance. Therefore, he gets angry and flips the table.
