ESB Entry Three Reading (Part One) You are going to read a text about volcanoes. For paragraphs 21 - 24, match the headings below (A - G) with the paragraphs. There are TWO headings which you do not need. The first heading has been done as an example. Volcanoes Example: G. Volcanoes and the Gods Today, volcanoes are studied by scientists, but in the past, people thought that volcanoes belonged to the gods. Hundreds of years ago, the people living on the island of Vulcano near Sicily believed that the island belonged to the Roman god, Vulcan who made weapons of war for the gods, Jupiter and Mars. On the Polynesian Islands, people believed that when a volcano erupted, it was the angry voice of Pele, the beautiful goddess of volcanoes. 21. Today, people do not believe volcanoes belong to the gods, but sometimes they name volcanoes after important people. Some are named after American presidents. Mount Adams in Washington was named after the second President of the United States, John Adams. Sometimes, volcanoes are given the names of people who were important to the local area. Mount McLoughlin in Oregon, USA, was named after Dr. John McLoughlin. He was an important businessman who created jobs for the local people and wealth for the area. 22. Volcanoes are known for the damage they cause. In Martinique in 1902, when Mont Pele erupted, the town of St. Pierre was completely destroyed and nearly 30,000 of the 65,000 people living there were killed. The town of Armero in Colombia was destroyed and more than 23,000 people were killed during the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in 1985. Volcanoes can cause other natural disasters such as tsunamis. They can also create problems for travellers. In April 2010, some airlines had to cancel flights due to a volcano erupting in Iceland. This meant many people were unable to fly home from their holiday. 23. In spite of this, there are some advantages to living near a volcano. Rock from volcanoes produces very good land for growing food. Some of the best rice-growing 6

areas of Indonesia are close to volcanoes. Volcanoes also produce new areas of land. The Kilauea Volcano has added nearly 220 hectares to an island in Hawaii. 24. Volcanoes can also make money for local areas. In places where volcanoes no longer erupt, many minerals, such as gold, silver, lead and copper, are found. These are used to make jewellery, building materials and cleaning products. The heat from inside volcanoes can create enough electricity for a city, such as San Francisco in America. Local tourism also benefits from volcanoes. The famous Yellowstone National Park in America has over 3 million visitors every year. Spa baths are sometimes found near volcanic areas, for example in Iceland and New Zealand. These resorts attract many visitors each year.

ESB Entry Three Reading (Part Two) You are going to read a text about Childrens Day festivals around the world. For questions 31 35, choose the correct answer A, B, C or D. Childrens Day Festivals There are many festivals around the world. Some of the most popular are Christmas, Easter and Mothers Day. Many countries have a festival dedicated to children. The International Childrens Day festival is held on June 1st every year. There is also a Universal Childrens Day in November, which is recommended by the United Nations. It is thought that Mexico was the first country to celebrate a day for children in around 1910. This is held on April 30th and around 50 countries join the festivities on this day each year. Many countries have their own special day to honour children, however. In Germany, Childrens Day celebrations were introduced in 1950. In tho se days, Germany was divided into two parts, east and west, and was not a united country. East Germany held the festival on June 1st and West Germany on September 20th. The celebrations were also different. In the east, children received presents and schools held special events. In the west, the festival did not have the same importance. Since the two parts of Germany came together in the 1990s, the festival has been held on the same day and has become more popular. In Japan, Childrens Day is an important festival. In 1948, the government decided to make it a national holiday. It is now a special day held to respect children and their happiness, and is celebrated on May 5th each year. This was originally the date of a festival for boys only. On Childrens Day, families fly flags outside their homes and display dolls of famous Japanese heroes inside. Rice cakes filled with sweet bean paste are usually eaten. There are also many events around the country. For example, in Tokyo, the capital city, the Kids Olympics are held. Both children and adults can take part in races and games. Thailands National Children's Day is celebrated on the second Saturday in January. There are many special activities for children. They can visit zoos and travel on buses without having to pay any money. However, there are other types of events on offer. Many government offices are open to children and their families, including Government House, where children can visit the Prime Minister's office. In Thailand, Childrens Day activities try to make children understand how important they are to their country and the responsibilities they have. These examples all show that although Childrens Day festivals are celebrated in different ways around the world, they all honour children.
