Problem Set # 5: σ'3 Δσ σ'1 Cc Cr σcon log (σ'e) σ'e σ'3/σ'e Δσ /2σ

The document provides information from a laboratory test on an overconsolidated clay sample including consolidation test results and triaxial test data. It also includes the results of an oedometer test on a clay sample. The student is asked to determine the Hvorslev parameters φe and ψe from the triaxial test data, and to calculate the compression index Cc, recompression index Cr, preconsolidation pressure Pp, and overconsolidation ratio OCR using the oedometer test results.

Problem set #5

Solving for the value of e and e:

The results of an oedometer test in a clay specimen having e0 = 0.965 are summarized in table below.
For the given data, determine the value of Cc and Cr, and the preconsolidation pressure Pp using the
modified strain energy method. If the sample was retrieved from a depth of 10m below the ground
surface of which the saturated unit weight of soil is = 13 kN/m3, and the water table is located at the
ground surface, determine the overconsolidation ratio. (OCR)

From the given equation of the line shown above:

Cc = 0.0728 (it is the slope of the blue line)
Cr = 0.0125 (it is the slope of the red line)
To get the value of Preconsolidation Pressure, Pp:
Pp = 280.164 kPa
In solving for the OCR, current stress that the soil is experiencing should be determined.
From the given: sat = 13 kN/m3 and depth of 10m, we could determine the current stress.
