Determining Courses
Choosing Courses
Make sure to go through the student handbook for your major. The best thing to do is to schedule an appointment with your advisor to determine which classes you will need to register for in advance. An advisor will be able to help you answer questions and concerns you may have. An advisor will be able to give you a sheet with the classes for your major that you will need to take. The sheet will list required courses and electives. Consult the sheet with your advisor and plan your semester.

Professor Evaluations
Use the list of required courses in order to select them on my.unt.edu. Utilize rate-myprofessor to find overall ratings of your professors before registering for your classes. Also, find fellow students who have already taken a course taught by the teacher for a personal experience you can reference when making your decision.

Analyze Course Load

Always analyze your course load before finalizing your schedule. UNT recommends between 14 and 17 credit hours for most students. This course load recommendation is used when all of the required courses for a major are taken at UNT within the fall and spring semesters. This average of 14 to 17 credit hours is estimated to keep students on track for their expected graduation date. To ensure that your expected graduation date is concurrent with the average student, it is recommended that students take some classes during the summers. Likewise, some students find that taking some of their core classes in community college helps keep course loads lower in the spring and fall semesters. For the best way to keep on track is to design an outline for required courses. This is further described in the next section.

Outline Future Classes

When registering for classes, remember to register early so that your pre-selected classes can be taken in a timely manner. The series of steps below will help you locate your classes so that you may create a functioning outline for your college career. This outline will help you when registering for your courses before each semester and will ensure that you graduate on time, given that you have taken all of the courses with acceptable grades.

Finding Required Course Lists

1. Find a list of courses required for your major by going to: http://catalog.unt.edu/content.php?catoid=3&navoid=161

2. Once directed to the given webpage, find and select the major and minor that you wish to pursue.

18

3. The given example will be given for a student pursuing Biology BA major and a French minor.

4. Once you have clicked on your major or minor, view all of the required courses and write down all course names along with their course numbers and subject abbreviations. While doing this, click on each course to view any prerequisites for the course and take note of these.

19

5. While completing this transcription, find and click on General University Requirements to view which core courses are required for the university.

6. Once directed to list of core courses, choose which classes are currently of most interest to you, while still following the instructions for the required course list, and write down their course abbreviations, number, and name on the same sheet. Take note of any prerequisites.

20

7. Take note of any extra requirements for specific fields you attend to apply for.

8. Use the list that you have created and generate a list similar to the one below. Note that this list is subject to changes due to modified interests or the unavailability of 21

courses. For instance, a traditional BA Biology major student will take both CHEM 1410 and BIOL 1720 during their first semester. Because CHEM 1410 becomes quickly unavailable, this student had to revise their plan and take CHEM 1410 and CHEM 1420 during the summer of 2014. The list below was made with Microsoft Excel and was color-coated to show the complex requirements of the BA Biology major coupled with a French minor. Green check marks show that the class has been registered. The green outline around the Summer 2013 semester indicates that the course has been completed. The yellow box around the Fall 2013 semester indicates that the courses are currently being taken.
