In all the years working on this blog I've seen a lot of sustainable houses, but none with an environmental integration as amazing as this one. Sustainable houses usually focus on having the minimum energy expenditure, or construct them with the use of recycled materials, but the environmental impact is also a very important feature in order to design a green building.
Fading in the mountains, this 3 bedroom house is virtually invisible when is viewed from different angles. And that is precisely what Mickey Muenning had in mind, he is the creator of the project. The 74 years old architect thought about the environment impact when he designed the green roof, seeding it with grass seed and plants of the same area. The difficulty of building on the coast of California, due to the strict regulations of the USA, did'nt stop Muenning from executing his project, quite the reverse in fact, they seemed to inspire the design of the home to accommodate it on the beauty of the landscape. Before digging into the ground, geologists and archaeologists examined the area, and an expert in botany analyzed the endemic spices of the environment to look for the endangered ones. After they have built the house, landscape designers planted a mixture of natural local species, and another parts of the building were plated with a layer of manzanita, very resistant to the environment and windproof. Energetically the house is also very well designed, it has solar panels for power management. a roof of 2030 inches of soil is responsible for isolating the house from the sun, reducing the energy costs. In fact, the actual residents say that they have reduced their energy consumption drastically by almost the half. And because the design of the home is very low, it is protected from the strong winds, that can go up to 150km/h, usuals at the coastal zone.
