WARNING

POWER SUPPLY / AC POWER ADAPTER

Only use the voltage specied as correct for the instrument. The required voltage is imprinted on the power adapter included. Use the specied power adapter only. Using the wrong power adapter can result in overheating or damage to the instrument. Check the electric plug periodically and remove any dirt or dust which may have accumulated on it. Do not place the AC adapter cord near heat sources such as heaters or radiators, and do not excessively bend or otherwise damage the cord, place heavy objects on it, or place it in a position where anyone could walk on, trip over, or roll anything over it.

WATER WARNING
Do not expose the instrument to rain, use it near water or in damp or wet conditions, or place containers with liquids which might spill into any openings. If any liquid such as water seeps into the instrument, turn o the power immediately and unplug the power cord from the AC outlet. Never insert or remove an electric plug with wet hands.

DO NOT OPEN
Do not open the instrument or attempt to disassemble the internal parts or modify them in any way. The instrument contains no user-serviceable parts. If it should appear to be malfunctioning, discontinue use immediately.

FIRE WARNING
Do not put ammable items, such as candles, on the unit. A combustible item may fall over and cause a re.

CAUTION
Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of physical injury to you or others, or damage to the instrument or other property. These precautions include, but are not limited to, the following:

POWER SUPPLY / AC POWER ADAPTER

When removing the electric plug from the instrument or an outlet, always hold the plug itself and not the cord. Unplug the AC power adapter when not using the instrument, or during electrical storms. Do not connect the instrument to an electrical outlet using a multiple-connector. Doing so can result in lower sound quality, or possibly cause overheating in the outlet.

HANDLING AND MAINTENANCE

When cleaning the instrument, use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use paint thinners, solvents, cleaning uids, or chemical-impregnated wiping cloths. Do not place the instrument in an unstable position where it might accidentally fall over. Do not rest your weight on, or place heavy objects on the instrument, and do not use excessive force on the buttons, switches or connectors. Do not use the instrument/device or headphones for a long period of time at a high or uncomfortable volume level, since this can cause permanent hearing loss. If you experience any hearing loss or ringing in the ears, consult a physician.

CONNECTIONS
Before connecting the instrument to other electronic components, turn o the power for all components. Before turning the power on or o for all components, set all volume levels to minimum. Also, be sure to set the volumes of all components at their minimum levels and gradually raise the volume controls while playing the instrument to set the desired listening level.

ALWAYS TURN THE POWER OFF WHEN THE INSTRUMENT IS NOT IN USE. Misa Digital Instruments cannot be held responsible for damage caused by improper use or modications to the instrument.

WHATS IN THE BOX

The Misa Digital Instruments Kitara package contains several items. Please make sure that all items are included in your box. If any are missing, contact the dealer that sold you the Kitara.

Kitara Digital Guitar

Cleaning Cloth Use this to clean Kitaras screen and body.

AC Adapter Please make sure you only use the supplied AC adapter with Kitara. Do not use any other AC adapter as it may cause damage to the unit.

KITARA DESCRIPTION

Touchscreen Indicates the current playing mode and various conguration settings of Kitara. Neck Each of the 144 note buttons designates a musical tone. The default tuning is the same as a regular guitar. Strap hooks To attach a guitar strap to the strap hooks. (note: strap hooks can be swapped for left-handed users)

Power button Hold for 2 seconds to power on/o Kitara.

USB port Connect USB cable (included) to your PC to allow le transfer or rmware update. Headphone jack Connect to headphones. AC Adapter connection Connect the AC adapter provided, to this port and your wall power supply. Audio line out Connect an audio cable to external speakers or any audio interface. MIDI-out Connect to an external MIDI device.

SETUP
Attach the Kitara strap to both strap buttons.

How to connect to Kitara

Left-Handed Mode Kitaras default orientation is for right-handed players. To switch Kitara to a left-handed orientation: -Unscrew the strap buttons from their current position. -Screw the strap buttons into the holes on the opposite side of Kitara. Access the conguration menu, then the system menu, and select Left-handed. The screen should immediately ip to accomodate.

The conguration menu is divided into the following sections: Volume Slider Controls the master output volume Preset Window Load Kitara presets. BASIC OPERATION
TOUCHPAD MODE
When rst switching on Kitara, the instrument will default to Touchpad Mode. The screen will be blue.

In Tap Mode, the general operation is the same as in Standard Play Mode, except that notes on Kitaras neck immediately plays regardless of any ngers being pressed on the touch panel. It is useful for the two-handed tapping technique. The Touchpad, Strings and X/Y ball control are a dierent colour in Tap Mode.

Pressing on a string will play the corresponding note, similar to a guitar string on a traditional guitar.Press a note key on the neck to increase the tone pitch of of the string block.

The conguration screen lets you set many parameters that aect how Kitara works.

CONFIGURATION MENU - PRESETS SCREEN

All the control and synthesizer settings on Kitara are saved in Presets. This includes: 1. Synthesizer voices 2. Eects parameters 3. On-board synthesizer control assignments 4. MIDI string conguration 5. MIDI control assignments 6. String tuning This means dierent presets can have dierent tunings recalled instantly, and you can build presets that are congured specically for external MIDI devices. Once you build and save the conguration, you wont need to recongure again. To load a preset:

CONFIGURATION MENU - SYNTH / MIDI SCREEN

The Synth / MIDI screen provides the interface to designate synthesizer voice assignments, string tunings and MIDI conguration. Each of the six strings on Kitara is assigned a row. For example, the settings of the low E string are the rst row from the bottom:

To change the string tuning: Press the forward and backward arrows to adjust the starting tone of the string. Each tone is assigned a note (from A to G#) and a number indicating the octave.

Each string can be assigned to either the onboard synthesizer or an external MIDI device. This allows you to control the onboard synthesizer and multiple external MIDI devices simultaneously by assigning each string to a separate device. To assign a string to the onboard synthesizer: Press the Synth button . One or more voice assignment boxes should be visible . Press an empty voice assignment box to create a new voice for the string (see Voice screen section below). To assign a string to an external MIDI device: Press the MIDI button . The MIDI channel selector should be visible . Select the desired MIDI channel corresponding to your external MIDI device using the arrows.

VOICE SCREEN
A voice is an individual waveform that makes a distinct sound. Each voice has a shape, and a set of parameters that can be used to modify the sound. Each string on Kitara can play up to ve voices simultaneously. As an option, you can also assign a voice to play through an FX block.

CONFIGURATION MENU - EFFECTS OVERVIEW

The Kitara onboard synthesizer contains two eects blocks (FX1 and FX2). Each eects block includes Compression, Distortion, Modulation, Delay, Reverb and EQ eects. Each string on the Kitara can be routed through either FX block. Let us use the compressor as an example:

COMPRESSION
The Kitara onboard synthesizer contains a compressor eect. A compressor is used to reduce the volume of loud sounds and amplify quiet sounds.

DISTORTION
The Kitara onboard synthesizer contains a distortion eect. Distortion makes the audio signal dirtier or warmer.

MODULATION
The Kitara onboard synthesizer contains various lter modulation eects including phaser, anger, tremolo and chorus. It is better to listen to these eects than try to describe them!

The Kitara onboard synthesizer contains a reverb eect. Reverb gives the audio a sense of space, to simulate a room environment. Reverb is a global eect (not per FX Block).

CONFIGURATION MENU - MIXER / EQ

This screen is divided into two sections: mixer and EQ.

MIXER
The Kitara onboard synthesizer contains two mixers, one for each FX block. The mixer is used to set various parameters of the signal after the signal has been processed by your preselected eects.

EQ
The EQ (Equalizer) is used to increase or decrease the level of certain frequencies in the audio signal. This is the nal stage of the signal chain.

CONFIGURATION MENU - ASSIGNING CONTROLS TO SYNTH OR MIDI PARAMETERS

In Play Mode the user has access to several controls via the touch panel. These are: 1. touch x 2. touch y 3. drag x 4. drag y 5. ball x 6. ball y 7. variation Synth Parameter Assignment All voice and eect parameters accessible in the conguration menu can be controlled by any of the above controls. For example, you may wish to control the Distortion eects Drive parameter to increase or decrease as you touch on the touch pad from one side of the screen to the other. In other words, you want to assign the Distortion Drive parameter to the touch_x control. To do this: 1. Open the Conguration Menu. 2. Select Distortion. 3. Locate the Drive parameter. Press the text label Drive underneath the slider. A new menu should appear.

MIDI Parameter Assignment Kitara can control external MIDI devices. A MIDI device listens on a particular channel from 1 to 16, and its controls are assigned Control Change (CC) numbers. For example, your MIDI device may have a Distortion Drive knob assigned to CC16. (Please see your MIDI devices instruction manual for more details on its particular conguration.) In this example, you can assign any of Kitaras controls to this knob as follows: 1. Open the Conguration Menu. 2. Select Synth/MIDI screen. 3. Press the MIDI Controls button. 4. Press the New button.

4. Select touch_x once to select it. 5. You can optionally press the Inverse button to reverse the direction of the control 6. Press touch_x once again to conrm. The menu should close and the Drive text label should be red. Now the location of your touch will aect the Distortion drive.

ADVANCED MIDI CONFIGURATION

The Kitara controls its internal synthesizer in a complex and very unique way. By default, the Kitara will not be able to control your external MIDI synthesizers in the same way without some conguration rst. This conguration is quite complex and varies depending on the exact MIDI equipment you are connecting to. Nonetheless it is vital that you understand the concepts and follow the steps below if you want the Kitara to control your external equipment the same way it handles the internal synth.

ADVANCED MIDI CONFIGURATION

STEP 2
You must set your external MIDI synthesizer to have voices open on 6 MIDI channels (corresponding to the channels assigned above). Please consult the user manual of your MIDI device if you have any trouble doing this. NOTE: Make sure you do not set your synthesizer to Omni mode this means it listens to all MIDI channels but treats them as a single channel.

If you have set up your device correctly, you should be able to press the Kitaras neck buttons on all six strings and hear notes played.

If you only hear notes played on one string, it means your synthesizer is only listening on one MIDI channel. You should check your user manual and try again.

STEP 3
You must enable the legato function of your external MIDI synthesizer. This is necessary to achieve pleasant sounding hammer-ons etc. Please consult the user manual of your MIDI device if you have any trouble doing this.

SUPER ADVANCED MIDI CONFIGURATION

STEP 4
The Kitara has the option to control the envelopes of the sound in a special way so as to be more realistic and allow for slides etc. We do this by introducing a control called stop_sound. By default, the Misa Kitara operates in Compatibility Mode which isnt so great. If you want a string to truly operate like the onboard synth, you need to congure a stop_sound control for it. A stop_sound control is a MIDI CC control that turns the sound of a channel o. It does not turn the note o, it merely mutes it. The MIDI specication denes Channel Volume as MIDI CC #07. Open the Advanced Conguration Screen. Open the Synth/MIDI Screen.

Press the MIDI Controls button to show the MIDI Control screen.

Press New.

Under control Type, choose stop_sound.

Select the string number you want to control.

Choose the Control Number in this case #07.

For Value, choose the default value you wish to set the Channel Volume (usually 127 is ne).

Press OK. You may wish to repeat this process for the other 5 strings, depending on your setup. If your external MIDI device has been congured correctly, you will notice you only get a sharp attack sound when you tap the touch panel. And when sliding notes, the sound is much smoother. NOTE: If the above does not work for you synthesizer, it is possible it does not respond to the Channel Volume CC #07 message. In this case, please consult your user manual for an equivalent control number that will work and substitute it in step 7 above.

MIDI TROUBLESHOOTING

1. Some synthesizers such as the Yamaha Motif make it possible to play the same note more than once on a single channel. This is incorrrect behaviour when used in conjunction with the Kitara. To solve this problem, you must enter the voice conguration menu and set Key Assign Mode to single. 2. If you are using stop_sound controls and you nd the sound is fading out unless you continuously tap the touch panel, it is because the sustain level (ADSR) of your synthesizer is set very low, or to zero. You should increase this value to a level that suits the particular sound. 3. If your synthesizer is only outputting maximum one note in total, even though you press buttons across multiple strings, it means you have set the synthesizer to an incorrect mode. Most likely omni mode. Omni mode means your synthesizer will receive input from all MIDI channels and treat them as a single channel. As described above, the Misa Kitara requires 6 individual channels one per string to function properly. You need to switch o omni mode, and enable your synthesizer to listen on six MIDI channels. Sometimes (for example, in the case of the Yamaha Motif) this requires setting individual synthesizer voices to each of the channels.

This section covers some of the issues that can occur with Kitara, and the troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve some of the occurances yourself. Use of force, objects or any heavy-handed items on the product is not necessary during troubleshooting. MISA DIGITAL INTERNATIONAL WARRANTY

What is the Misa Digital Warranty? Important: To qualify for warranty service and to activate this Limited Warranty you must register your Product by connecting your purchased Kitara to a PC/MAC computer via USB, which will connect to Misa Digital's registration platform and where you will be required to input and submit your product information and certain personal details. Misa Digital reserves the right to refuse to provide warranty service if you have not registered your Product accordingly. For consumers who are covered by applicable consumer protection laws or regulations in their country of purchase or country of residence (if dierent) this Limited Warranty is in addition to all rights conferred by such consumer protection laws or regulations. This warranty gives you specic legal rights, and you may also have other rights that vary by country, state or province. This Limited Warranty is governed by and construed under the laws of Hong Kong.

1. LIMITED WARRANTY
Misa Digital warrants the Kitara neck and body (the "Hardware Product") against manufacturer defects in materials and workmanship, arising under normal use of the Hardware Product, for the period of one (1) year from the date of purchase ("Warranty Period"). If such a defect arises and a valid claim is received within the Warranty Period Misa Digital will, at its sole option, either: 1.1 1.2 1.3 Repair the Hardware Product defect; or Replace the neck of the Hardware Product, up to a maximum of 1 free replacement; or Accept the return of the Product and refund its purchase price.

Misa Digital reserves the right to apply any fees or surcharges for repairs where necessary. This Limited Warranty applies only to the Hardware Product. It does not apply to any non-Misa product or software that may be packaged or sold with the Hardware Product. Software distributed with the Hardware Product is not covered under this Limited Warranty and you should refer to the licensing agreement accompanying the Software for details regarding its use.

2. CONSUMABLES
With regard to any of Misa Digital's consumable items that are purchased for use with the Hardware Product including (without limitation) cables and adapters (and excluding any software), Misa Digital warrants such items against manufacturer defects in materials and workmanship, arising under normal use of the items with the Hardware Product, for the period of 60 days from the date of purchase. If such a defect arises and a valid claim is received, Misa Digital will, at its sole option, either: 2.1 2.2 Replace the relevant item; or Accept the return of the item and refund its purchase price.

3. EXCLUSIONS
Misa Digital does not warrant that the operation of the Product will be uninterrupted or error-free. Misa Digital is not responsible for damage or loss arising from failure to follow instructions relating to the Product's use. This warranty does not apply: 3.1 3.2 3.3 3.4 3.5 3.6 To defects caused by wear and tear or due to the normal ageing of the Product; To damage caused by accident, misuse, abuse, contact with liquid, ood, re, earthquake or other external causes; To damage caused by servicing performed by any person not authorised by Misa Digital; To cosmetic damage such as scratches or dents or broken plastic on ports due to normal wear and tear; or To any unauthorised opening of the Product; or If the product seal on the back of the Kitara has been defaced, tampered with, damaged or removed.

4. SERVICE BY USER
You should not open the Hardware Product. The Hardware Product contains no user-serviceable parts and opening the Product may invalidate this warranty.

5. LIMITATIONS
To the extent permitted by law, this Limited Warranty is exclusive and in lieu of all other warranties, remedies and conditions, whether oral, written, statutory, express or implied. To the extent permitted by applicable law, Misa Digital specically disclaims any and all statutory or implied warranties including warranties of merchantability and tness for a particular purpose. If Misa Digital cannot lawfully disclaim such warranties then to the extent permitted by applicable law all such warranties will be limited in duration to the duration of the express warranty. Except as provided in this warranty Misa Digital will not be responsible for any direct, special, incidental or consequential loss or damage including but not limited to loss of use, loss of revenue, loss of actual or anticipated prots, loss of the use of money, loss of anticipated savings, loss of business, loss of opportunity, loss of goodwill or reputation and loss of or damage or corruption to data. Misa Digital's maximum liability shall not exceed the price paid for the product. The foregoing limitation does not apply to death or personal injury claims or any statutory liability for intentional and grossly negligent acts and/or omissions.

HOW TO OBTAIN SUPPORT

Before seeking warranty service it is recommended that you utilise the online support information located at www.misadigital.com. If the Product is still not functioning after making use of these resources then please contact our customer support team at [email protected]. Please ensure you have your Product serial number and proof of purchase, and have registered your Product with Misa Digital's registration platform by following the steps explained in the Limited Warranty. Our support team will assist you with resolving the problem. If the Product needs to be returned to us for repair or replacement our support team will provide you with a Returns Merchandise Authorisation (RMA) number and information on where to send the defective product. Upon receipt of the returned Product we will test it and if the Product is found to be defective we will arrange for a repair, replacement or refund within 28 working days together with a reimbursement of the reasonable postage costs incurred by you in sending the product to us. We will refund any money received from you using the same method used by you to pay for your purchase. Returns will not be accepted without a valid RMA number. You must obtain an RMA number before sending any Product to us and we do not accept responsibility for any Product returned without a valid RMA number. Any product returned to us which is found not to be faulty, or which is returned without a valid RMA number, will be returned to you at your cost and risk. If you have data stored on the product then you should protect this against possible operational failures. It is your responsibility to keep a separate backup copy of any data. Any data stored on the product may be deleted in the course of warranty service. Your product or a replacement product will be returned to you as it was congured when originally purchased at its factory settings.

WHAT IS NOT COVERED?

This Limited Warranty is conditioned upon proper use of the product by the user. This Limited Warranty does not cover: (a) Damage caused by improper installation or improper connection to any peripheral (b) Damage caused by an external electrical fault (c) Damage from use of parts not manufactured or sold by Misa Digital Technology Limited (d) Product purchased from anyone other than a Misa Digital authorized dealer (e) Modications to product not approved in writing by Misa Digital Technology Limited (f) Equipment that has the serial number removed or made illegible (g) Normal cosmetic and mechanical wear (h) Damage or loss during transit to an Authorized Misa Digital Repair Center or to Misa Digital Technology Head Oce ( i ) Units that are purchased from unauthorized dealers will not be covered under the Misa Digital Limited Warranty.
