Optical Access Networks: Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON)

INTEC_design developed a complete ITU-T compliant 1244/622 Mbps front-end chip set for GPONs including high performance burst-mode transmitters and receivers.

Four innovative GPON burst-mode (BM) chips were developed by INTEC_design: a BM-LD (laser driver) to be used at the ONT, and a BM-TIA (TransImpedence Amplifier), a BM-LA (Limiting Amplifier) and a BM-CPA (Clock Phase Alignment) forming the OLT front-end.

With rapidly growing customer bandwidth requirements facing heavy cost restrictions, GPON is expected to prevail as a leading optical access technology and to eliminate the bandwidth bottleneck in the last mile. A wellconceived GPON (ITU-T G.984.x standards) matches unprecedented performance with flexible FTTx (Fiber-To-The-x) network configurations. GPON offers efficient gigabit transport for "triple play" suites of voice, video, and data services with guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS). The 1.25 Gbps burst-mode chip set and the GPON system were developed within the Flemish IWT project SYMPATHI and the EUfunded FP6 IST GIANT (GIgaPON Access NeTwork) project respectively.

A world-first GPON test bed was built at the INTEC_design lab. Four GPON burst-mode chips were characterized and integrated into a GPON ONT-OFE and an OLT-OFE sub-system. Intensive validation was carried out successfully over a point-to-multipoint upstream optical link at 1.25 Gbps. Valuable contributions were provided to the ITU-T via Alcatel-Bell, for standardization of the GPON Physical Media Dependent (PMD) layer. The experiments show that the BM-TX and the BM-RX comply with the ITU-T G.984.x recommendations. Excellent front-end performance provides a high optical power budget for GPONs. The results obtained are the first of their kind published in IEE / IEEE journals and conference proceedings.
