Planning for Inquiry differs from Guided Discovery or Integrative model. Inquiry problems, hypotheses, and data used to test them comes from students, try to design lessons so that you provide enough guidance to keep the process moving. Most Inquiry lessons are ongoing; they often require more than a single class period Inquiry lessons are designed to help students to be self-directed. Identify inquiry question or problem and specify your learning objectives Plan for data gathering
Identify Question- Teacher or (ideally) the students identify a question that the students will attempt to answer Generate Hypotheses- Students generate hypotheses that attempt to answer the question. Gather and Display data- Students gather data related to the hypothesis (es) and organize and display it so it can be analyzed. Assess hypotheses and generalizeThe teacher guides a discussion of the results and the extent to which they support the hypotheses, and students generalize results based on the assessment of the hypotheses.
Assessment is taken in the discussion between teacher and students about results of the hypotheses. Students can be asked to justify their conclusions Data theyve collected can be graded in order to assess their understanding of the concept they were expected to learn.
Students acquire experience with the Inquiry process Students would acquire a deeper understanding of equations and graphs. The students ability to discuss their understanding is helpful and beneficial for both students and the teacher; allows students to get past the process of memorizing their way through math as the book puts it. It also is able to be used in different content areas, offering a better chance of retaining the information by the students if it gives them the opportunity to critical think and analyze the question/concept theyve been asked to examine.
The Inquiry model allows students the opportunity to experience the scientific model and to analyze thoroughly the concept they have been assigned to learn. Students are able to generate a hypothesis based on the question the teacher can provide, gather information related to the hypothesis the students have made and then the teacher discussing the results of the hypotheses made by the students and the supporting information that justifies their results.
