CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): Understand similarity in terms of similarity transformations. 1. Given two figures, use the definition of similarity in terms of similarity transformations to decide if they are similar; explain using similarity transformations the meaning of similarity for triangles as the equality of all corresponding pairs of angles and the proportionality of all corresponding pairs of sides. 2. Use the properties of similarity transformations to establish the Angle-Angle (AA) criterion for two triangles to be similar. Prove theorems involving similarity. 3. Prove theorems about triangles. Theorems include: a line parallel to one side of a triangle divides the other two proportionally, and conversely; the Pythagorean Theorem proved using triangle similarity. 4. Use congruence and similarity criteria for triangles to solve problems and to prove relationships in geometric figures. Big Ideas: Similarity of shapes Congruence The Pythagorean Theorem
Unit Goals and Objectives: To be able to recognize and show similarity/congruence of shapes (especially with regards to similar triangles). To be able to replicate and construct basic geometric proofs. To understand and prove the Pythagorean theorem using a variety of methods.
Unit Summary: During the unit, students will be exposed to the following over the course of three lessons: 1. A lecture, which should expose students to the basic tools needed to accomplish the goals within this section (i.e. exposure to what the Pythagorean Theorem is, as well as basic styles that can be used to prove it). 2. A webquest, which will refine students understanding of the applications of the Pythagorean Theorem, as well as begin to sharpen basic proofing skills through continued exposure to various adaptations of the proof of the famous theorem. 3. A graphic organizer, which will ultimately test students abilities in satisfying the stated unit goals and objectives. Through the course of these lessons, students will be exposed to various aspects of mathematics not previously exposed to them, in an attempt to sharpen their abilities to think critically, as well as their ability to satisfy the CA content Standards set above.
Assessment Plan:
Formative:
Worksheet- Answer questions associated with the Pythagorean Theorem. To do so, you will require the problem solving/reasoning skills developed from the lecture. Student learning/achievement will be based on completion (as well as correctness of answers). Discussion: Break into groups and test your understanding of the material by discussing key aspects of the Pythagorean Theorem, as well as test each other on cognitive understanding. Student learning/achievement will be based on the creativity/understanding shown within the assessment. 3-2-1: Break into groups and write 3 things you learned, 2 things you found interesting, and 1 question you still have. (This can be a good opportunity to discover what you do or do not know). Student learning/achievement will be based on cumulative understanding of course content, as well as creativity in remaining questions. Quiz: You will be given class time to complete a cumulative quiz involving concepts gone over while learning the Pythagorean Theorem. Student learning/achievement will be based on completeness as well as the number of correct answers. (note: partial credit may be given for logical reasoning even if that reasoning results in an incorrect answer).
Summative:
Group Project Applications: Going beyond simply memorizing a formula, you will (in groups) develop and perform research on a real-world application involving the Pythagorean Theorem. (You will also be giving a short presentation). Student learning/achievement will be based on creativity as well as communication skills.
