British Columbia Service Entrance Requirements
for Single Family Residential Buildings
TELUS Communications Inc. is responsible for providing and installing the network wiring to the property, and the owner/developer is responsible for providing a suitable pathway (trench, conduit, aerial support etc.) as stipulated by TELUS Communications Inc. from the property line to the building Service Provider Demarcation Point (SPDP).
Aerial Service If the drop wire crosses a street or lane to reach the house, the minimum placing clearance is 5.3 m above the crown of the road. If the minimum road clearance cannot be maintained, a clearance pole will be requested by TELUS to be installed. This will provide the minimum required CSA clearance in all weather conditions. So, if your house is a low ranch style, to ensure adequate road clearance it may be necessary to place a mast. Telephone drop wire may attach to the same mast as electrical utility. If this is done, a minimum of a 300 mm separation must be kept between electrical utility and TELUS wires.
For aerial service, the following materials, available at electrical suppliers, are required: Weatherhead, EMT (metal) or PVC (plastic) with UV inhibitor conduit, pull string and a plastic Network Interface Box (NIB) (in-wall or surface mounted). A conduit size of 32 mm minimum allows for placing of TELUS and CATV service wire to the building. Please contact your local CATV representative for their requirements.
If the conduit is to support the drop wire from the pole then a minimum of 50 mm HDG iron pipe must be used.
Grounding TELUS recommends that a No. 6 insulated ground wire be provided from (and connected to) the power service ground to the NIB. This is the maximum size conductor required by the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and therefore ensures that grounding will be adequate to accommodate future growth of the communication installation. Please note that the minimum size of ground wire that TELUS will accept is a No.10 insulated ground wire. See Canadian Electrical Code Section 60-704. The grounding conductor placed in the NIB should then be directly connected to the grounding conductor of the buildings consumer service. As the next (least recommended) alternative, the NIB grounding conductor may be attached to the power service electrical equipment enclosures (if allowed by the electrical inspector). Where the power grounding conductor is run within a metal conduit, the NIB grounding conductor should be bonded to that conduit. This ground wire should be as short as possible (as a guideline it should be less than 6 m) with as few bends as practical (sweep bends only). It must be permanent and, where needed, guarded from mechanical injury. An approved connector should be used for all connections. Notes: 1. A minimum 300 mm clearance must be maintained in all directions between TELUS wires and electrical utility wires.
2. TELUS wires may be attached to the electrical utility mast for support below the electrical utility wires (300 mm clearance). The maximum height of the TELUS service attachment point shall be 6.5 m maximum.
3. The maximum height of the TELUS service attachment point shall be 6.5 m maximum. Electrical utility wires cannot be attached to the TELUS mast for support in order to meet CEC clearance requirements.
4. TELUS policy is to place the protector/demarcation blocks on the rst building on which the drop or entrance cable attaches, except, when no service is required at the rst building and the entrance cable conduit is continuous to the second building.
5. On single family homes all wires placed beyond the demarcation point (termination point of the entrance cable or drop) is classifed as inside wire and is the responsibility of the owner.
6. Flexible or Rigid conduit (complete with string) to be placed in the stud wall or concrete slab from the NIB to the inside wire Star Conguration inside the home supplied and installed by the owner/builder. 25 mm conduit for TELUS only or 32 mm for shared TELUS and CATV. 7. Notes: 1. For aerial service, a Class 6 treated pole shall be provided adjacent to the mobile home at the point of service entry. The treated pole shall set 1.22 m (4') into the ground no more than 610 mm (2') from the mobile unit. For minimum clearance over public and private property, see telus.com/bics
2. For underground service, a 2 m treated post measuring 100 mm X 100 mm (4" X 4") shall be set 0.7 m into the ground with 1300 200 mm above the nal grade is required. A Network Interface Box (NIB) provided by the owner/builder is required for aerial or underground service. TELUS will install protection and demarcation devices inside the NIB. At least one inside wire run must extend into the NIB where it can be attached to the demarcation device. The building owner is required to supply a No.6 AWG green insulated ground wire to the NIB. Owner/builder will provide one (1) duplex 15A non-switched power receptacle dedicated to home networking communication and entertainment equipment, installed inside the multimedia enclosure. (The use of a Multimedia enclosure or Smart panel is not mandatory although it is strongly recommended.) If a multimedia enclosure is not used, a duplex receptacle is to be located within 450 mm (18") of the star location for the home networking, communication and entertainment equipment installed at this location. Total space required for the mounting of the Fibre Equipment and Multimedia enclosure will be a minimum of 600 mm (24") X 900 mm (36"). Owner/builder will provide patch panels for Voice/Data/Coax.
