Grade Time: 20 minutes Connection to Standards: New York State Common Core Standards for Mathematics Similarity, Right Triangles, & Trigonometry: Prove theorems involving similarity 4. Prove theorems about triangles. Theorems include: a line parallel to one side of a triangle divides the other two proportionally, and conversely; the Pythagorean Theorem proved using triangle similarity. Define trigonometric ratios and solve problems involving right triangles 8. Use trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean Theorem to solve right triangles in applied problems. ISTE NETS for Students standards 3. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks d. Process data and report results 4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. e. Identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation f. Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project g. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions h. Use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore alternative solutions
5. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. i. Advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology j. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity k. Demonstrate personal responsibility for lifelong learning l. Exhibit leadership for digital citizenship 6. Technology Operations and Concepts Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. m. Understand and use technology systems n. Select and use applications effectively and productively o. Troubleshoot systems and applications p. Transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies Objective: A) Students will be able to understand how to use the Pythagorean theorem formula which is and how to find the missing side of a triangle whether it is a leg or the hypotenuse using the Pythagorean theorem formula. Learning activity: A) I will tell my students that today we are starting a new topic in the trigonometry unit, called the Pythagorean theorem. I will be doing a little bit of board work to show my students how to use this formula and then have them all log in to the computers and go to a website found on my resources page of my websites to get practice. I will also show them where the scientific and Pythagorean theorem calculators are located on my website and how to use these calculators. Provide Information: A) I will tell them who discovered this theorem and write the formula for this theorem on the board. I will show my class a few examples on the white board and then have them go to my resources section on my website. I will tell them that we will watch a video about the Pythagorean theorem, which involves, finding the missing side of a triangle. The video is found on this website, http://www.wisc-online.com/Objects/ViewObject.aspx?ID=ABM1501. The students will then be told that they will practice using online questionnaires. I will tell the students to pay close attention because they will be doing individual practice using a certain website I found. I will walk around to my students to ask him or her how they are doing and see if they need help. Then they will look at and work with Pythagorean theorem calculators and scientific calculators that I found.
Provide Practice: A) I will do two examples on the whiteboard and then have them watch the video I found on the Pythagorean theorem. This video also provides examples where each student will have step by step help on how to use this formula and where to plug each variable into the formula. B) I will have my students go to this website http://www.brainingcamp.com/content/pythagorean-theorem/questions.php. These website provides questions and shows how they are retaining the material for the Pythagorean theorem. After they complete the questions, we will have a discussion about there scores. Provide knowledge of results: A) I will walk around the room to each students and ask if they are finding this activity easy or hard. Also see if they are having a difficult time using this formula. Review of activity: A) I will ask the students to state the Pythagorean theorem formula. I will draw a right triangle on the board and pick a student to label the legs and hypotenuse on the triangle. Method of assessment: A) Students will complete a 7-question quiz I made through Edmodo, com.
