Mackenzie Magness Fall 2013 Technology Request for a High School Math Classroom DESCRIPTION Smart Board 800
0 Series It is a projector coupled with a white board that projects the computer screen and allows the user (both teacher and students) to interact with it using touch. The software that comes with it offers so many opportunities to further understanding. There are premade quiz templates, matching templates, ways to categorize different lists, and so much more. Also, when using the digital ink that comes with it, the user can save their work so that it can be referenced to again at a later time, or printed off for a student who missed class.

ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS There are other companies that make interactive whiteboards: Numonics, Promethean, Polyvision, Mimio, and eBeam. They all vary in their capabilities and different functions. Promethean was the other brand that was most recommended. However, SmartBoard is something that is known to be reliable. Even their company website claims that no white board has needed to be replaced in a K-12 classroom yet do to average wear and tear. SmartBoard is guaranteed reliability and guaranteed excellent service and training. STATEMENT OF INSTRUCTIONAL USE I would use this interactive whiteboard in my classroom to help aid in deeper understanding of individual topics and stronger connections between related topics.
Mackenzie Magness Fall 2013 RATIONALE Math is a hard thing for students to interact with in general. Manipulatives offer one way for students to do that but they get broken, lost, and worn down after using a single class set seven times, a day year in and year out. A SmartBoard offers all of those same manipulatives while also offering a unique and different approach in using them. The possibilities with SmartBoard are endless. I can show or have students manipulate a linear equation so they can see how changes in the formula affect it. I can have them complete the square with the built in shapes. I can also have them practice their multiplication with tiles. It makes showing class examples much easier since I dont have to worry about holding things up or walking around; everything is projected for everyone to see. SPECIFIC STUDENT BENEFIT As mentioned above, it provides the added bonus of being hands on. The ability to manipulate graphs, equations, shapes, angles, and lines are all so important for deep mathematical understanding. Students can see the change happening, not just the before or after picture I would be able to draw for them. Working with the SmartBoard is engaging and excites students when they get to interact with it. Plus, the SmartBoard has enough going on that it keeps students focused and involved in their education. SmartBoards are also very user friendly for students with special needs. The projection is big enough that even if they have dysgraphia, they can use their hand to write or move objects around. The display is big and bright so visual impairments wouldnt need much of an accommodation at all. SmartBoard technology is easy to use for everyone, students with special needs would be no exception. During class I could have my notes laid out for the day. I could work out problems for the class, save my work, and print it out for students who need the extra help or missed class. Also going to interactive websites is an easy way to help further develop understanding. LEVEL OF USE I would use the SmartBoard almost every day for instructional purposes. I would work my problems out and show various mathematical representations using the Notebook Software that comes with SmartBoard products. A SmartBoard could be used for any subject area but I would be using it for math (geometry or algebra). I would have six classes a day, each having roughly twenty five students. That is 150 students interacting with the white board in one calendar year; that is a great opportunity to help further these students knowledge. A SmartBoard would make it much easier for me to incorporate instructional websites into my day to day teaching. It isnt practical to think every student would have a computer to go to everyday to look at various sites. I mentioned manipulatives before and the SmartBoard does offer a way to replace those, but if I did have a class set in good condition I could have my work projected up on the board and students could follow along.
