The Essay There are some interesting parallels between the Roman and Chinese empires even though these empires ended differently. They existed in the different era. Both have territory area which includes several large parts among the world. They also have people that surround around in their each empire which is dominated by barbarians. However, those empires collapse for different reasons in a different way. Briefly, this essay will explain further about them. The Roman Empire has wide and many territorial areas surrounded it. It ruled the Mediterranean world from about 500 B.C to about 500 A.D and it spread out to include North Africa, the Middle East, and Northern Europe. Likewise the governmental structure and bureaucracy, it is quite complex, while the people surrounding it were barbarians and nomads. These barbarians were a constant threat to the Roman Empire. Otherwise, it has three ways to protect the empire. First, they conquered territory like Rhine and Danuba Rivers whose outer boundaries were natural barriers. Second, they also built fortifications like in between Rhine and Danuba, and between Scotland and England to keep out invaders. Third, they used precautionary buffer states, like colonies, which were midway between barbarism and civilization. Then, the Roman Empire finally collapse when the German and
Slavic barbarians broke through the fortification. So, in a short 200 years, the Roman Empire fell to the power of the Germans. On the other hand, Chinese Empire grew and remained intact from 221 B.C to 1911 A.D and it spread northward to Peking, west to the Central Plain, and south to Canton. It was become a center of art and philosophy, while people surrounded it were nomads and barbarians. People who constant threats to the empire were Barbarians, Huns and Mongols. Like in Roman Empire, Chinese Empire also has three ways to protect their empires. First, they used natural boundaries like the Yellow and later the Yangtze Rivers. Second, they built the incredible Great Wall of China. Third, they used buffer states that learned much from China, becoming civilized in the process. Then, the Chinese Empire finally collapse because barbarians broke through the fortifications and the buffer states although they did not destroy the Chinese Empire because they admired the superior culture of China, they set up dynasties imitating the Chinese way of life. The Chinese Empire then continued to decline slowly until the Manchu dynasty ended in 1911 and a republic was declared. In conclusion, there is still a connection between these empires. Although they existed in different era there still an interesting parallels of them. We can classify each point of them like in case of governmental structure, the territorial area, or the chronological how those empires could be collapse.
