Typical Process Flow Diagram PFD Pygas Processing

Pygas is a byproduct of steam cracking naphtha, butane, or gasoil that contains valuable components like benzene, toluene, and xylenes. It is processed by first hydrotreating it to saturate di-olefins and olefins, and desulfurize it. This is done in a three section hydrotreating unit. The stream is then fractionated to recover the C6-C8 cut for further aromatics extraction, and a C9+ cut. Hydrotreating and fractionating pygas allows recovery of high value aromatic components.

Typical Process Flow Diagram (PFD) Pygas Processing

Pygas is a naphtha-range product with high aromatics content used either f or gasoline blending or as a f eedstock f or a BT X extraction unit. Pyrolysis gasoline is produced in an ethylene plant that processes naphtha, butane or gasoil. Pyrolosis gasoline or pygas (C5+ cut) is a liquid by-product derived f rom steam cracking of various hydrocarbon f eedstocks in olef in plants. T his C5+ cut, if lef t in its raw f orm, has little commercial value owing to its high reactivity and low stability. However, the stream contains many high-value components, such as isoprene, benzene, toluene and xylenes. Benzene is a key component in pygas. On a capacity basis, pygas extraction accounts f or approximately 36% of global benzene. Extracting these components can be highly economical and typically requires hydrotreating in a pygas hydrogenation unit (PHU). T he stream can be treated in various ways, depending on the required product slate.

Pygas Hydrot reat ing

Raw pygas is f irst f ed to the f irst stage hydrotreating section. To produce BT X, this C6+ stream is sent to a f ractionation section to obtain a C6-C8 heart cut, which will be f urther hydrotreated to saturate monoolef ins in the second stage hydrotreating section. T he hydrotreating unit consists of three sections: First stage Hydrotreating section to saturate mainly di-olef ins to olef ins. Second stage Hydrotreating section to saturate the olef ins and de-sulf urize the pygas. Fractionation section to stabilize the hydrotreated streams and to recover the C6-C8 heart cut f or f urther processing f or aromatics extraction and the C9+ cut.
