PRESIDENTS REPORT

OCTOBER 2013 BI-ANNUAL EDITION

Generally speaking, we had a slow summer, but after going to the recent Zone Meeting in Ridgeway, our branch seems to be the norm after listening to their reports, the fact is that members have many choices to make of where they can go during nice weather and along with holidays and family functions, it is hard to attract people to the branch. All said and done, we put on several bar-b-ques and had entertainment a few times. Our Labour Day Parade was a success again and many thanks go out to all those that took time out of their busy schedules, to march with us and enjoyed a day in our yard featuring a great band. Now we are entering our most important time of the year. The Poppy Campaign. We start off October 26th with our Pen Centre annual "kick off" day along with the Thorold Pipe Band, and later on we have our banquet on Friday night the 8th, followed by the church parade to Elm Street United on Sunday the 10th and then our Remembrance Day ceremonies on the eleventh. Please join us in any of these activities and take a couple of hours out to help poppy for the branch. There are lots of things going on, so it is the best time of the year to show as a member your support. Volunteering is rewarding at anytime, try it. Our community room upstairs is currently under construction, so please be supportive of us, as we complete renovations. ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION BRANCH 138

Yours in comradeship Wayne Haslam

MEMBERSHP REPORT
Comrades; The Early Bird campaign started September 1st and it is doing well with 28 member renewals. The campaign runs to November 30th and posters are up around the Branch to remind us. There is incentive to renew early as your name will be entered in a draw for a free years membership as well as five free drinks. Once again Bocchinfuso Funeral Home is donating that prize to the fortunate person that has their name drawn. Heres the breakdown for 2014 dues as passed by the members at the January General Membership meeting: Seniors = $35 (with ten years service at our Branch and age of 70 or over) Regulars = $45 Cards can be laminated for $2 (about same price as large coffee) There will be $5 added to the prices after the Early Bird campaign. In addition to the financial aspect, the majority of your dues are forwarded to Dominion Command to provide support & assistance to Veterans, currently serving military and RCMP members and their families. You will enjoy Branch privileges, maintain your years of continuous service and ensure continued delivery of your Legion magazine. As the Membership Chairman I invite you to renew during the campaign. I will make myself available for those wishing to renew on Fridays from 4:00 to 5:30 pm and then Id like to socialize. I did accept the volunteer position as your Membership Chairman and pledge to do my best for you. I am open to suggestions as well as constructive criticism in order to serve you best. See you at the Branch. Kevin

FROM THE EDITOR

IM BACK Time to stir it up again. Well all Renos are well under way in the upstairs hall. Thank you to the Hall Rental Committee for doing such a great job in getting the funds in place. Thank you to the Executive for taking it to the next level like a Responsible Executive should. Thing are now moving along. I wish I could have gotten this Bulletin out sooner but trying to get Reports from our busy Executive is like pulling teeth. Almost had to bribe for the reports I did get. Maybe better next for the next one. Not going to stir up anything this time around but you just never know what might come up :) If anyone has anything they would like to see in their bulletin, please let me know and I will try to get it in. Thank you Bulletin Editor: Robert (Bob) Mussell

WARNING ! DO NOT wash your hair in the shower!! It's so good to finally get a health warning that is useful!!! IT INVOLVES THE SHAMPOO WHEN IT RUNS DOWN YOUR BODY WHEN YOU SHOWER WITH IT. WARNING TO US ALL!!! I don't know WHY I didn't figure this out sooner! I use shampoo in the shower! When I wash my hair, the shampoo runs down my whole body, and printed very clearly on the shampoo label is this warning, "FOR EXTRA BODY AND VOLUME." No wonder I have been gaining weight! Well! I got rid of that shampoo and I am going to start showering with Dawn Dishwashing Soap. It's label reads, "DISSOLVES FAT THAT IS OTHERWISE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE

EMAIL WORTH SHARING

If you don't know GOD, don't make stupid remarks!!!!!! A United States Marine was taking some college courses between assignments. He had completed 20 missions in Iraq and Afghanistan . One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist, and a member of the ACLU.

MERRITONIAN 2013/2014 THE

ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION BRANCH 138

One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, "GOD, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform... I'll give you exactly 15 min." The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, "Here I am GOD, I'm still waiting." It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him; knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned, and sat there looking on in silence. The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, "What in the world is the matter with you? Why did you do that?" The Marine calmly replied, "GOD was too busy today protecting America 's soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid stuff and act like an idiot. So He sent me." The classroom erupted in cheers!
