SSM User Guide
SSM User Guide
The Smart Switch Management (SSM) utility, among other features, allows you to discover switches on your network that have SSM implemented on them and to access their management software. This capability is especially useful when you enable DHCP on a switch that does not have a console interface, allowing you to access the switchs web browser management software without knowing the switchs IP address.
Note The following procedures show how to run the utility directly from the documentation CD. In this situation, Windows displays numerous messages. When you copy the files to your workstation, these messages are not displayed.

6. Select the NIC adapter on your workstation that you want to use and click OK.

The next window contains a blank list for information that is found during the discovery process, as shown below.
The search continues anyway and its progress is shown in the bar above the buttons. Click Stop at any time to stop the discovery process. You can click Keep Blocking to close the message window. This does not hamper the SSM Utility.

When the process is complete, the window is refreshed to show the list of IP addresses that the utility discovered, along with basic information about the hardware at that IP address. A sample of the default area of the window is shown below.
A check mark in the # column indicates that the switch will be displayed in the network view and available for you to manage. 12. De-select any switches that you do not want to view. 13. Click OK. The Discovery Options window closes and the globe in the network view displays a plus (+) sign next to it. 14. Click the plus sign next to the globe to view the subnet you selected, and click the subnet to view the switches in the subnet, as shown below.

The web browser opens and displays the main page for the switch you selected (assuming that the switch is powered on), and you can manage the switch in the same way you would have done if you had manually entered the switchs IP address. To manage the switch in the future without using the SSM utility, make a note of the IP address assigned by the DHCP server.
