Greater Things . . .
(John 14:12)
Sunday, October 27, will be our Commitment Sunday for Greater Things . . ., which is our congregational stewardship education theme for this fall. Looking ahead to 2014, the committees, working groups, and teams of church life at Newark Central have all reviewed their activities and impact, considered the costs and plans for the future, and prayerfully worked with the Finance team to develop a budget and plan for the next year. We also have all been intentional in looking back over past efforts, and asked ourselves what has served Gods kingdom values and the Newark Central mission & vision, and what hasnt gotten done what we hoped for? Sometimes that has meant reduced expenditures in areas that didnt need it, occasionally it points us to increasing our planned expenditures, and in all areas managed costs to be faithful stewards together of what God has given the church through you. When you receive your Commitment Card & Discipleship Card in the mail, they will come with a proposed church budget by functional area of church life, and some pie charts that organize how weve spent money in the last couple of years by categories that are familiar to each of us in our own personal stewardship. Our goal is to invite you to read, reflect, and pray over your own stewardship in the widest possible sense: time, talents, and also treasure. How am I using the gifts God has given me, and yes, there will be a moment on Oct. 27 to also help us estimate what we have to use in Serving Gods Transformation of Licking County by sharing your estimate of giving. You can also bring forward, at that point in the services on Oct. 27, your reflections on service and ministry where you would like to grow in 2014, and know you will receive prayer and support as we do this together. In doing this together, we open the path for God to do Greater Things

Clothing sale a success!
A huge thank you to all involved in making this year's clothing/bake sale a huge success. If you brought clothes, sorted and laid out clothes, baked goodies for the bake sale and/or worked the day of the sale, that made you an intregal part of this project. CWF made a little over $300, which at just $2 a bag. . . . .many families profited from your generosity. One heartwarming story to share . . . . .one of the last customers to "shop" was a little girl around 11/12 years of age. She filled several bags and as she checked out, her mom shared that her daughter was buying things for women she had befriended on her weekly visits to nursing homes and saw their needs! Just one of many stories that were shared by appreciative customers!

Notes from my Knapsack A long look around
Here at Newark Central were moving into that dangerous season between schools start and the Christmas rush, when plans for a new year are made, programmatically & in terms of budget, for leadership by nominations and elections, and the simple brute fact of the calendar turning one page at a time, the months clicking past on the screen or being flicked by a finger on the phone. 2014 is coming, and fast. Meanwhile, its hard for me to believe Ive been serving you almost a year and a half in total, and what was once 2012 is coming to an end of 2013, with events and observances now repeating for me: there are no more firsts to experience in the church year. With that comes a certain amount of perspective, and even with my earlier history among you, Ive had enough travels and work out beyond the corner of Mt. Vernon & Rugg to have something to compare to, or learn from. One aspect of that experience Id like to bounce off of you is how Ive come to see our congregational priorities show themselves in practice, in concrete terms. We still have a constitution and by-laws with certain assumptions built into it, and the mission statement from 1998 in the entryway, but in nuts-and-bolts terms these are the vision & values I see us living out on a day to day basis through our fellowship. * Worshipful evangelism At Newark Central, we see our Sunday services as the primary way to invite people to meet Jesus, hear about the Gospel, and understand our church. In worship arts such as the music, the choirs, the sermons, and with the sanctuary itself, we believe that this is the heart of who we are as a Christian community. There are other ways and places we can invite people into our fellowship, but even then, gathering them into worship so they can share the Table with us is central. * Health & Healing Ministries Our Medical Loan Closet is now probably the single biggest way we share the Good News of Gods outreaching love to our community. How this volunteer team takes that which is of no value (at least for the moment someone wants to get rid of it!), and through servant leadership & the gift of administration transforms those objects into blessings freely given: its a sermon in deeds every Monday, Wednesday, & Friday. The importance of home communion & pastoral care by the pastor & elders is also a presence we believe helps people find healing, as are the two or three Sundays a month we provide worship experiences into care facilities in this area. There are also many ways the congregation works around the edges of the bureaucracy & institutional side of modern medical care to help people get help, understand what theyre experiencing, and find hope, not the despair of a lonely wait or a missed appointment. * Education & Youth Leadership Few members may realize just how much time over the course of the year that the officers, elders, pastor, and staff of the church spend on education. Not just Christian education, a very active committee and a valued program for the youth and some great adult classes with a life all their own (Co-workers; New Disciples; Amplify, Inc.), but the various scholarship funds and trusts our church maintains. To wisely share these gifts, to put them to good use, and to care for the funds held to do that work is all a ministry in its own right, and one that has life-changing impacts. We also invest heavily in Camp Christian, with direct gifts, work on-site, providing counselors without which the program cant function (including putting at least a week of that work within the Youth Director position, something few churches still do but we proudly continue), and of course the number of youth from here who attend, and then bless us with their learning on their return. * Hands-on Mission This may seem obvious, but while it gets talked about in many congregations, this is a git r dun church. From the Mission Team annual week to a Saturday ramp build, from meals delivered to repairing homes, our history with Habitat and our other partnerships in the community to finish projects no matter who started them and not caring who gets the credit: Newark Central sees being there & getting dirty for Jesus to be direct fulfillments of the Gospel command to Go, therefore . . . We may look at budget categories, but those four areas define for me where we have put our treasure, & our hearts, in Christs name at Newark Central. In joy & hope, Pastor Jeff
The Newark Christian
Joys and Concerns We pray as a congregation privately & publicly during our worship, asking the Lord to be with our prayer intentions, and for our prayers to be a strength and support for those who need healing, those who need hope, and all those who are in grief. In prayer we find shared sorrows lessened, and shared joy multiplied!
