Small Hydro Power Designer V1.0

The document describes the user interface for the SHPD software for designing small hydropower projects. The interface guides users through entering hydrological data, designing project components, viewing outputs, and performing cost estimation and capacity optimization. It requires Excel 2007 and provides definition sketches, design checks, and the ability to generate AutoCAD drawings. The interface is still under development and feedback is requested to improve the automatic optimization module.

SMALL HYDRO POWER DESIGNER v1.0

Release Jan - 2009 SHPD v 1.0 is an excel workbook equipped with useful design tools for feasibility level analyses / designs of small high head hydropower projects (upto 10 MW). However, the user can modify the workbook to include additional modules suited for larger projects. SHPD can assist in quickly producing layout alternatives, making reasonable cost estimates / cost comparisons for these alternatives and preparing concrete outline drawings of major structures using AutoCAD. SHPD is a freeware intended for engineering students as well as practising hydropower engineers. A user interface is also provided for assisstance of new users. The workbook and interface both have been created using Excel 2007 Professional Plus (vista) and are ensured to work correctly only for the same version. Please enable macros before entering or editing the inputs and read the "License.txt" file before using SHPD. Typical layout of small hydro components adopted in SHPD is like this; Tyrolean weir as intake Connecting channel from intake to sandtrap Concrete sandtrap with spilling and flushing controls Headrace (Channel or Pipe) Forebay with spilling and flushing controls Penstock with manifold Powerhouse (Building Size + Hints on Turbine Selection) Tailrace Channel

USER INTERFACE
The workbook requires macros to be enabled for full functionality. The user interface has been tested on Excel 2007 only. The workbook can be saved as 'office xp' type for earlier version of Excel or you can download 'office compatibility pack' from microsoft website. If you get error messages on startup of SHPD then enable macros and close the user interface. The major inputs can be directly entered into the SUMMARY worksheet. The design worksheets have been hidden for safety against unintentional damage however, the password to unhide these sheets is given in this help file.

The first screen introduces the conceptual layout of a small hydropower project;

User Interface

Once you click on the START button the main user interface of SHPD appears;

User Interface

The very first input required by SHPD is the hydrological data of the river/stream under study. Next tab opens the main DESIGN dialogue box. All the design and drawing modules are controlled through this dialogue box except for the costing and capacity optimization modules. The user is required to click on the DESIGN button after any significant change in the major inputs.

User Interface

Definition sketches of major hydraulic structures have been included for quick reference. The concrete outlines of major hydraulic structures can be drawn automatically using SHPD in combinition with AutoCAD by clicking on the AutoCAD button.

User Interface

The DETAILED HYDRAULIC DESIGN dialogue box can be accessed through the HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES button on the DESIGN tab. The quantities of various civil works are calculated based on the design and dimensioning performed through the detail design module.

User Interface

The user should confirm the status of DESIGN CHECKS after each run of SHPD. Detailed error reporting has not yet been incorporated in SHPD however, the above mentioned design checks may prove to be very usefull for experienced as well as new users. The costing of civil works can be done in any currency through COSTING tab. The quantities of major civil works like earth works, concrete works, stone works and steel quantity for penstock pipe are automatically calculated in SHPD. Only the dollar exchange rate is required for the local currency. After each change in this dialogue box the user is required to click on the UPDATE button.

User Interface

The optimization of installed capacity is a necessary task for any feasibility study in the field of hydropower engineering. SHPD is capable of performing this task very very quickly provided the user is familiar with the general design logic of SHPD. It is required to run SHPD various times by varying the design discharge and the outputs from these runs is entered into the OPTIMIZATION tab where a single click on the UPDATE button will perform the optimization.

User Interface

The AUTO OPTM. button will start the automatic optimization module which can change the design discharge automatically and update the inputs required in the OPTIMIZATION tab with minimal design checks. The AUTO OPTM. module is under progress and the results may not be reliable at all. The user interface is under development and your relevant feed back will be highly appreciated.
