A modem is a device that allows
computers to exchange information
using telephone lines. A modem
allows you to connect to the
Internet, send and receive e-mail
messages and exchange information
with another computer.
There are two types of modems.
An external modem attaches to a
computer using a cable. External
modems are portable and easier to
fix if a problem arises. An internal
modem is installed inside a
computer. Internal modems are
less expensive than external
modems. Both types of modems
provide the same features.
When you install a modem,
Windows installs the necessary
software, called a driver. The driver
allows your computer to
communicate with the new modem.
Windows searches your computer
for a new modem that is Plug and
Play compatible. Plug and Play
hardware uses technology that
allows Windows to automatically
detect and install the device
without requiring you to adjust
any of the settings on the device.
Windows can also help you install
a modem that is not Plug and Play
compatible.

stops, you should wait three to
five minutes and then restart your
computer.
A device that is not Plug and
Play compatible is sometimes
referred to as a legacy device. If
your modem is a legacy device,
Windows may ask you to provide
the driver that came with the
modem. This driver is stored
on the modems installation
disk.
When installing a modem,
Windows determines which port
the modem will use. A port is a
connector that allows instructions
and data to flow between the
computer and the modem. Most
modems use a COM port.
When you install a modem that is
not Plug and Play compatible, you
must ensure that the settings
Windows suggests for the modem
are correct. You may have to adjust
the settings on the modem to
match the settings suggested by
Windows. You can adjust the
settings by using the software
that came with the modem or by
adjusting the jumpers or switches
on the modem. Consult the
modems manual before making
any adjustments.

Y
ou can change the dialing
properties for your modem.
Dialing properties are
settings that determine how your
modem will dial phone numbers.
This is helpful when dialing
out using a program such as
HyperTerminal or when using
your modem to connect to an
Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Windows sets up your modem
dialing properties when you install
your modem. These settings are
named New Location.
When changing the modem dialing
properties, you can tell Windows
which area code and country you
are calling from. Your modem may
dial a different phone number,
depending on whether you
are making a local call or a
long-distance call.

Most phone companies offer calling
cards to their customers. There are
many types of calling cards available.
Some cards offer incentives, such
as discount rates, to attract new
customers. Many businesses and
organizations use calling cards to
track toll calls.
How do I choose the set of dialing
properties I want to use?

hen changing the
modem dialing

specify any special numbers you
use to dial local or long-distance
numbers. This is useful if you
will be making calls from a hotel
room and you must dial a
number to get an outside line.
You can also specify whether you
wish to use tone or pulse dialing.
Tone dialing is the most common
type of dialing used by phone
companies.
If you have the call waiting
feature, you can have Windows
automatically disable the feature
when you use your modem. You
should turn off the call waiting
feature when using your modem,
since this feature could disrupt
the modem connection.
You can set up the modem to use
a calling card. A calling card is
a card that allows you to make
long-distance telephone calls and
have the charges billed to the
owner of the calling card. Calling
cards can also be used where toll
calls are not permitted.

Why are some modem settings not
available?
The settings you can change depend on
the type of modem you are using. One
modem may have different features and
capabilities than another modem. Also,
some settings may not be available if the
correct driver is not installed on your
computer. A driver is software that allows
Windows to communicate with the modem.
Installing the correct driver may allow
you to change modem settings that are
currently not available.
Why is my modem very slow even though
I specified a high maximum speed?
Modems must use the same speed when
exchanging information. A fast modem can
connect to a slower modem, but they will
transfer information at the slower speed.
How do I lock the modem speed?
Many phone lines are affected by
interference that may result in slow
transmission speeds. If you tell
Windows to only connect at a specific
speed, a connection will not be made
with another modem unless Windows
can connect at the speed you specified.
To lock the modem speed, click the
Only connect at this speed option in
the Properties dialog box. This option
is not available for some modems.

A port is a connector that allows

COM port. A COM port is another
name for a computers serial port.
Most modems have a speaker that

You can specify the maximum
speed setting for your modem,
which determines how fast your
modem can send and receive
information. The speed of a
modem is measured in Kilobits
per second (Kb/s). The maximum
speed setting should match the
fastest speed setting of your
modem. Check your modems
documentation to determine
the modems maximum speed.

What are the most common bits
settings for modems?
Before modems can communicate with
each other, they must be set to use the
same number of data, parity and stop
bits. The most common settings are 8
data bits, no parity bits and 1 stop bit.
Why should I have my modem wait
for a dial tone before dialing?
In many office buildings that use
sophisticated phone systems, a
modem may not receive a dial tone
as soon as it connects to the phone
system. Having your modem wait for
a dial tone before dialing helps ensure
it will be able to dial the number.
Why is my call not connecting?
There are many reasons that a call
may not connect. Problems sometimes
occur with the phone system or
the other modem may not be set
to answer calls. Usually, 60 seconds
is an adequate length of time to
wait before canceling a call.

connection settings for
a modem. Changing a
modems connection settings

communicate with other modems.
Before two modems can exchange
information, the modems must
use the same data bits, parity
bits and stop bits settings. You
will see unreadable text on your
screen if the settings are different.
The data bits represent the actual
information exchanged between
computers. The parity bits
determine whether errors
occur during the transfer of
information. The stop bits
indicate when each data bit
begins and ends.
You can specify whether you
want to wait for a dial tone before
the modem starts dialing. You can
also tell Windows how long you
want to wait before canceling
or disconnecting a call. Having
Windows disconnect calls when
your modem is idle for a period
of time can help prevent the
accumulation of online charges.
Most modems are already set up
to use the most common options,
so it is unlikely that you will have
to change the connection settings
for your modem.

Why are some advanced connection
settings not available for my modem?
The available advanced connection
settings depend on the model and type
of modem you are using. Settings that
cannot be adjusted have a dimmed
appearance in the Advanced Connection
Settings dialog box.
What does the Use cellular protocol
option do?
Some modems, often those in portable
computers, can use cellular telephones
to communicate with other modems.
Because the cellular phone system is
prone to errors, special error correction
settings are needed when information is
being transferred. If you have a modem
that can connect to a cellular telephone,
you should turn on the Use cellular
protocol option.

Click Properties.
I The Properties dialog
box appears.
W
indows allows you
to change the advanced
connection settings for
a modem. Changing the advanced
connection settings can help a
modem operate more efficiently
and exchange information faster.
You may need to adjust the
modems advanced connection
settings if you are experiencing
problems while using the modem.
For example, if you have trouble
connecting to other computers
or you are losing information
when transferring data, adjusting
the advanced connection settings
may fix the problem.
The hardware and software you
use will determine which advanced
connection settings you must
change. Usually, the advanced
connection settings are set
properly when a modem is
installed.
The advanced connection settings
allow you to use error control
options to improve the quality
of a poor connection between two
modems. Both modems must be
using error control for the options
to take effect. You can have your
modem connect to another modem
only when the connection is
reliable. You can also have
Windows compress, or squeeze,
the data to increase the speed at
which information transfers
between the modems. If your
modem supports the error control
options, you should leave the
options turned on.

Why should I use the Append to log
option?
Keeping a record of all the modem
activities can help you keep track
of the time you spend connected to
other computers. You can also monitor
charges you acquire from dialing toll
calls or from dialing in to your Internet
service provider. The log can also help
you fix problems with your modem by
showing you which commands are
causing errors to occur.
How can I view the log file?
In the Advanced Connection Settings
dialog box, click the View Log button.
A Notepad window will open, displaying
a record of the modem activities.
When would I use extra settings?
Certain modem models may have
difficulty making a connection using
only their default settings. These
connection problems may be fixed by
using extra settings. For example, if you
have trouble connecting to your Internet
service provider, the service provider
may be able to tell you which extra
settings you need to connect properly.

The flow control settings determine
how data transfers between your
computer and the modem. Most
modems use hardware flow control.
You can choose a modulation type,
which refers to the type of signals
sent between modems. Both
computers must use the same
type of modulation to successfully
exchange information. Most
modems use the Standard
modulation type. It is unlikely
that you will have to change the
modulation type setting.
You can use extra settings to send
special commands to a modem
before it starts communicating with
another modem. For example, you
may be able to type ATM0 to turn
the modem speaker off. These extra
settings are often referred to as an
initialization string. Your modems
manual will explain which extra
settings, if any, you can use with
your modem.
Windows keeps track of the
modem activities for the most
recent session in a log file. You

to another computer tell you when
you have successfully connected. If
you have turned off the sound for
your modem, you can have Windows
tell you when you are connected.

ou can set up a computer
so you can dial in to the
computer from another
location. Setting up a dial-up
server is ideal for someone who
uses a laptop computer or a
home computer and wants to
access information stored on a
desktop computer at the office.
A modem must be installed on
the dial-up server before you
can dial in to the computer.
You can dial in to the dial-up
server to access information
stored on the computer and
the network attached to the
computer. Connecting to the
dial-up server also allows you
to print documents on printers
located at the office.
You can assign a password so only
people who know the password
can access the dial-up server.
Many networks have a dedicated
dial-up server that accepts calls
only from computers that require
access to the network. These
dedicated dial-up servers are
often called remote access servers.
After you set up a dial-up server,
you need to set up a connection
to the server on your laptop or

Can I access the Internet using
HyperTerminal?
Some computers on the Internet only
offer information by telnet. You can use
HyperTerminal as a telnet client to connect
to another computer on the Internet and
access the telnet information. To connect
to a telnet site, perform steps 1 to 9 below
to display the Connect To dialog box. Click

address you want to connect to and
then press the Enter key. HyperTerminal
connects you to the computer. Perform
step 14 on page 410 to end the connection.
When shouldnt I use HyperTerminal to
connect to another computer?
Most people use HyperTerminal to connect
to local bulletin board services. If you want
to connect to another computer running
Windows, such as your computer at work,
you should use Dial-Up Networking
instead. See page 398 for information
on Dial-Up Networking.
Where can I get the latest version of
HyperTerminal?
HyperTerminal is continuously updated
to add more features. Windows 98 includes
a version of HyperTerminal. You can get

HyperTerminal window.
Click to close the
HyperTerminal window.
IA message appears,
asking if you want to save
the information you entered
for the connection.
Can I change the phone number
for an existing connection?
Most phone numbers for bulletin board
services and online services rarely change,
but you may have to change the number
you dial when calling from a different
location, such as when you are traveling.
Right-click the connection in the
HyperTerminal window and then click
Properties. The Connect To tab allows
you to change the phone number for
the connection.
Can I view images using HyperTerminal?
No. HyperTerminal is only capable of
displaying text. You will not be able to
view images using HyperTerminal, but
you can transfer image files to your
computer and then use another program
to view the images. See page 416 to
receive a file.
Why doesnt anything happen when
I connect to another computer?
The computer you connect to must
be set up to receive incoming calls.
Although a modem may answer your
call, the computer connected to the
modem may not be properly set up to
establish a connection.
How do I delete an existing connection?
Over time, you may find the
HyperTerminal window fills up with
connections that you create. You may
want to remove connections you no
longer need to make the window less
cluttered. Click a connection you want
to delete and then press the Delete key
to remove the connection.

HyperTerminal can make a computer
you connect to believe that your
computer is a terminal. This allows
your computer to connect to a
mainframe computer. Mainframe
computers are large computers
that are found in banks, schools,
universities and large organizations.
There are many different types
of terminals and each offers a
different set of features. If the
computer you connect to can
only communicate with a specific
type of terminal, HyperTerminal
will automatically adjust so you
will be able to communicate with
the computer.

your Windows settings to change the
color. Many people find white text
on a blue background easier to read.
To change the colors displayed,
perform steps 1 to 3 on page 208 to

I The word Capture
appears in bold when
HyperTerminal is capturing
information to a file.
How do I view a captured file?
HyperTerminal will save the
captured text in a text file so you
can use any text editor or word
processor to view the file. Even
though you can display color and
special symbols in HyperTerminal,
this information will appear as
unreadable text in a text editor
or word processor.
How can I stop captured text from
printing?
If you want to cancel the printing
of captured text, you will have to
remove the captured text from the
print queue. See page 102.
How else can I capture text?
You can also use the Windows
Copy and Paste features to copy
information from your HyperTerminal
window to another program such
as WordPad. This is ideal for small
sections of text you want to capture.
See page 118.
How much information can I save
in a captured file?
There is no limit to the size of your
captured files, except the amount
of storage space available on your
computer. You should only capture
information you plan to review later
because captured files can take up a
lot of storage space.

C
apturing text allows you
to send information you
see on your screen to a
file or to your printer. You can
then review and work with the
information later.
Capturing information can
save you money because some
bulletin board services charge
you for the time you spend
connected to their service.
Instead of reading information
while you are connected to the
service, you can capture the
text and review the information
when you are no longer
connected.
Information may appear very
quickly on your screen. The
information at the top of the
screen may scroll off before
you have time to read the text.
Capturing text is useful since
you may not be able to scroll
back to text you previously
viewed.
You can stop capturing text at
any time. If you are capturing
text to a file, you can stop or
pause the capture when you
know the information will be
of no interest in the future.

IA dialog box shows the status
of the file transfer. The dialog
box that appears depends on
the protocol you selected.
I Windows may ask
you to name the file.
What does downloading mean?
Transferring a file from another
computer to your computer is
called downloading. When you are
downloading, you are transferring
a file down to your computer.
When you send a file from your
computer to another computer,
you are uploading the file.
What is throughput?
Throughput measures the speed
that information transfers. When you
are receiving a file, HyperTerminal
displays the throughput of the file.
HyperTerminal measures throughput
using characters per second (cps).
Should I check programs I receive
for viruses?
Programs you get from bulletin
board services can contain viruses.
Viruses can cause a variety of
problems on your computer, such
as the appearance of annoying
messages on your screen or the
destruction of information on
your hard drive. You should use
anti-virus software to scan any
programs you receive before
running the programs. Most
computer stores offer anti-virus
programs. You can also get anti-
virus programs on the Internet.

H
yperTerminal allows
you to receive a file
from another computer.
One of the primary uses of
HyperTerminal is to transfer
files from other computers to
your computer.
Bulletin board services often
have a wide variety of text files,
pictures and programs that you
can transfer to your computer.
Before you can receive a file from
another computer, you need to
instruct the other computer to
send the file. Each computer you
receive files from will have its own
preferred method of transferring
files. You can usually instruct a
computer to send a file by
selecting commands from a
menu offered by the computer.
When transferring files to your
computer, you need to specify
which protocol to use. A protocol
is a language that computers use
to communicate with each other.
Both computers must use the same
protocol before they can exchange
information. HyperTerminal can
use several types of protocols,
including Xmodem, Ymodem,
Zmodem and Kermit. The most
common type of protocol is
Zmodem.
The protocol you select determines
the information you need to give
HyperTerminal before transferring
the file. You may not need to
perform all the steps below.

Does HyperTerminal restrict the
size of files I can send?
HyperTerminal does not restrict
the size of files you can send.
However, if you are sending a large
file, you should ask the person who
operates the computer receiving the
file whether there is enough hard
drive space to store the file.
Which protocol should I use?
One of the most commonly used
protocols is Zmodem. Almost all
online services and Bulletin Board
Services (BBSs) allow you to transfer
files using Zmodem.
What happens if the connection is
interrupted while I am transferring
a file?
An interruption can occur because
of problems with the phone line.
The version of HyperTerminal
included with Windows 98 uses
Zmodem with Crash Recovery. This
protocol allows HyperTerminal to
automatically recover from a broken
connection and continue sending
your file.

What does ASCII stand for?
ASCII is an acronym for American
Standard Code for Information
Interchange. ASCII is a code that
assigns number values to characters.
This helps computers exchange
information.
Why am I unable to see what I type?
When you type a character in
HyperTerminal, the character is sent to
the computer you are connected to and
then sent back to HyperTerminal before
it is displayed on your screen. If you
select the Echo typed characters locally
option, HyperTerminal will display each
character you type before sending the
character to the other computer.
Why does all the text appear on one
line at the bottom of my screen?
HyperTerminal may not be able to
determine when a new line of text is
being displayed. You can select the
Append line feeds to incoming line
ends option to fix this problem.
What is 7-bit ASCII text?
7-bit ASCII text is a collection of
128 characters that most computers
can understand, such as 3, a, B, @
and $. If HyperTerminal is displaying
unrecognizable characters, you should
select the Force incoming data to 7-bit
ASCII option.

T
he ASCII settings in
HyperTerminal determine
how text transfers between
your computer and the computer
you are connected to.
You can use the ASCII settings to
adjust the way information you
enter is sent to the other computer.
For example, pressing the Enter key
may move you to the beginning of
the current line instead of starting a
new line. You can use the Send line
ends with line feeds option to tell
the other computer each time you
start a new line. The Echo typed
characters locally option is useful
if you cannot see the characters
you type. You can turn this option
off if characters appear twice.
You can tell HyperTerminal how
long you want to wait before
sending information. If the other
computer loses some of the
information you send, you can
increase the line and character
delay settings.
You can also change the ASCII

ou can use a special cable
to connect two computers
to share files and resources.
This is useful if you want to
connect a portable computer
to a desktop computer. Unlike
a regular network, neither
computer needs a network
interface card.
You must designate a host
computer and a guest computer.
The host is the computer that
provides the files and resources,
such as drives and printers. The
guest is a computer that can
access files and resources on the
host and on the network attached
to the host.
Make sure you plug the cable into
both computers before you begin.
You can choose from two types
of cable. A serial cable allows
you to connect the computers
over a long distance but transfers
information slowly. A parallel
cable transfers information faster
than a serial cable. A parallel
cable is the best choice for most
direct cable connections.
Before setting up the direct cable
connection, you must prepare the
host computer to share its files
and resources. To turn on sharing,
see page 456. To share files, see
page 458. To share printers, see
page 462.

one. The profile with the most
installed devices is probably the
profile you use when docked and
attached to a network.

Will I ever need to use hardware
profiles on my desktop computer?
It may sometimes be beneficial for
a desktop computer to have different
hardware profiles. For example,
if your computer does not have
enough resources to handle all
of your add-in cards, you can use
hardware profiles to switch between
cards.

portable computer. A profile
tells Windows which hardware
devices you want to use. To create
a new profile, you copy an existing
profile and then make changes to

A portable computer can be used
in several different situations. For
example, you may use the portable
computer at an office where you
connect to a docking station to
access a network. At home, you
may use the portable computer
with a printer, monitor, keyboard
and mouse. When traveling, you
may use the portable computer
without additional hardware. Each
situation requires a different setup
to use the appropriate hardware
devices.
To avoid the task of having to set
up your computer each time you
change locations, you can save
the hardware settings for each
situation in a profile.
