This document appears to be an exam for a course on Plates and Shells. It contains 5 questions, with subparts for some questions. Question 1 deals with calculating deflection and stress in circular and various boundary condition plates. Question 2 distinguishes membrane and exact plate theories and calculates deflection and stress in a simply supported plate. Question 3 is about stresses in conical and spherical shells using membrane theory. Question 4 covers merits and demerits of plate solution methods and designs a hyperbolic shell structure. Question 5 explains plate equations, develops membrane equations for a paraboloid shell, and calculates required thrust ring area for a spherical dome roof.

Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions. 2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary. 3. Figures to the right indicate full marks. Q.1 (a) A circular plate of diameter 3.0m and 30mm thickness carries a uniformly 07 distributed load of q=20kN/m2. Find the maximum deflection and maximum bending stress. Assume plate is fixed all around. Take E=200Gpa and =0.3. 07 (b) State the boundary conditions of following plates. (1)Cantilever, (2)Square simply supported(all edges), (3) Square fixed plates (all edges), (a) Distinguish between membrane theory and exact theory of small 07 deflection of plate. Explain stress resultants in both theories with sketches. (b) A simply supported plate 3mX3m and 25 mm thick carries a udl of 07 20kN/m2. Find the maximum deflection, bending stress at a distance of 1.5m from both adjacent sides and reactions at supports. OR Derive the support shear for a rectangular plate of size 3mX5m carrying a 07 (b) point load of 50kN. Assume supports to be fixed. E=200Gpa and =0.25. (a) Find the value of stresses generated in a conical shell under udl and point load at crown. (b) Using membrane theory derives the condition of equilibrium for singly curved surfaces. OR (a) Find the value of stresses generated in a spherical shell under udl and point load at crown. (b) Using membrane theory derives the condition of equilibrium for doubly curved surfaces.
