IN WHAT WAYS IS TEACHING VOCABULARY TO BEGINNERS DIFFERENT FROM TEACHING IT TO ADVANCED STUDENTS?

Teaching vocabulary is crucial on the process of acquiring a new language. Notwithstanding, it is important to highlight the differences of teaching it to beginners and advanced learners. Differences that teachers have to be aware on in order to make them achieve the command of the language target.

Teaching beginners is considered the most challenging level of language instruction. Since students at this level have little or no prior knowledge of the target language, the teacher (and accompanying techniques and materials) becomes a central determiner in whether the students accomplish their goals (Teaching by principles. Beginning learners classes are teacher-centre owing to; they depend on the teachers modelling. When presenting the new vocabulary, pronunciation is relevant to the learners, so it is in charge of the teacher to provide with correct intonation, explaining in detail how to work with the new words, monitoring the development of the class, rough-tune the language, and doing plenty of repetition of words, phrases and sentences. Furthermore, the teacher will have to deal with the very little background of the students when teaching vocabulary. Advanced students needs go beyond other levels since the knowledge of new vocabulary upgrades them, allowing them to express appropriately in a wide range of situations. Even though it seems that the teacher has an easy class where the students recognise the item and the meaning because of the independence they acquired during the process of learning, it must be cleverly channel during the class. The teacher role is a provider of feedback, to create an effective learning. Whereas beginners' class rough-tune is vital, at this stage the natural language of the teacher so as the language speech is a must. For the aforementioned reasons, there is no doubt that teaching vocabulary at different stages imply a variety of aspects in teaching, where the goals of vocabulary teaching must be more than simply covering a certain number of words on a word list. Teaching techniques help learners achieve their goals, giving to them opportunities to use the items learnt effectively.
