KAMAKSHI AMMANTEMPLE
Mrngudu is one of the shakthi peedams in the countr\'. Though it is situated close to the city. within 20I(m, it still retains village-like appearance.People congregate ever\day in thousands to this temple for a darsan of the presiding deity, I{amakshi. Legend has it that Uma, in a plavful mood once closed the eyesof the Lotd Shiva with her palms. This caused Universal darkness for a while. All the Devas, Rishis and humans stumbled and vrere tettified.

Lord Shiva was angered and he ordained Shakthi to be born on eafth and remain there to atone for her act. Shakthi accordingly was born as I(amakshi in Mangadu and was av/aiting the arctvalof the Lord, to marcy her, as promised by him. As this did not happen,Shedecidedto perform a penance. She lit fire on all sides, in five homakundams and stood in the kundam at the center, stood on the leaping tongue of flame, on her left toe and for ages.
