Graduate Coursework Scholarships 2013

The Melbourne Scholarships Program aims to reward and provide access to a world class university for the best Australian and international students. The following is a quick reference guide to the scholarships available to local, international and travelling undergraduate students. Details are correct at time of printing. Local Students

Graduate Access Melbourne Bursaries


$5000 one-off payment in the first year of enrolment. Number: up to 200

Eligible students must belong to one or more of the following categories: Disadvantaged socio-economic circumstances; Rural or isolated background; Disability or chronic medical condition; Personal difficulties; Previous status as a refugee or current holder of a Humanitarian Visa; Recognition as an Indigenous Australian; Women in Engineering. In addition they must have demonstrated the capacity to successfully undertake one of the graduate coursework degrees that are participating in the Graduate Access Melbourne scheme and must have applied for a place in the relevant graduate coursework degree. Applicants must be: an unmarried female, at least 25, be an Australian citizen or hold an Australian permanent residency or permanent humanitarian visa, planning to enrol full time or currently enrolled (with at least 12 months of full-time study remaining in their current course) at the University of Melbourne. Applicants must be able to demonstrate socially and/or financially compelling circumstances and have a strong academic record. Eligible students must have completed an undergraduate degree at Victoria University (priority will be given to students enrolling immediately following undergraduate studies) and be accepted into the Graduate Access Program. Eleanor and Joseph Wertheim Scholarship

How to Apply and Closing Date: No scholarship application is required. All VU graduates accepted into the Graduate Access Program will automatically be considered by their graduate school.

Sir Samuel Wadham Rural Students Scholarship


$5000 annual allowance. Number: varies, depends on funds available

Applicants must be a student who has relocated from a rural area no more than 12 months prior to scholarship application,, planning to enrol or currently enrolled (with at least 12 months of full-time study remaining in their current course) in any area of study other than agriculture at the University of Melbourne. Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need. Part-time enrolment will be considered for socially compelling reasons. Applicants must be female and planning to enrol full time or be currently enrolled (with at least 12 months of full-time study remaining in their current course) in a Social Sciences discipline at the University of Melbourne. Applicants must be able to demonstrate socially and/or financially compelling circumstances and have a strong academic record Applicants must be at least 25, be an Australian citizen or hold an Australian permanent residency or permanent humanitarian visa, planning to enrol full time or currently enrolled (with at least 12 months of full-time study remaining in their current course) at the University of Melbourne. Applicants must be able to demonstrate socially and/or financially compelling circumstances and have a strong academic record. The Melbourne Institute for Indigenous Development administers the Indigenous Scholarship Program which provides specific scholarships such as housing bursaries, book vouchers, living costs and general grants. Applicants must: be able to demonstrate that they are an indigenous person of Australia and be able to demonstrate eligibility for the requirements of the scholarship.

Future Generations Scholarships


Up to $10,000 annual allowance in the first year of enrolment. Number: dependent upon funding.

How to Apply: No scholarship application is required. All graduates accepted into the Graduate Access Program will automatically be considered by their graduate school.

The Future Generations Scholarships are awarded on academic merit to students admitted to specific graduate coursework programmes, to whom the award may make a difference in accepting the offer of a course place.

International Students
Citizens of countries other than Australia or New Zealand, and not Australian PRs

International Postgraduate Coursework Awards(IPCA)


25% to 100% tuition fee remission. Number: dependent upon funding. Annual $15,300 living allowance, 100% tuition fee remission, a return economy airfare, research materials allowance and health cover. Number: up to 3

How to Apply: No application is necessary. Selection is made by faculties based on academic merit. Successful applicants are emailed an offer at the start of semester. How to Apply: No scholarship application is necessary. Closing Date: See website for dates.

Students must receive an unconditional offer of a place in an approved masters program. Check the Melbourne Scholarships website for a full list of eligible courses.

Eligible students must: be a citizen of an ADB member country, be enrolled in an approved course full-time, have at least 2 years full time work experience, be 35 years or under by closing date and return to their country of citizenship at the end of their course.

Travelling Scholarships

Melbourne Global Grants


Up to $2 500 for overseas study of more than 12 weeks approved for credit to your degree. Up to $1 000 for overseas study of less than 12 weeks approved for credit to your degree. Number: Dependent on funding.

To be considered, students must, have an overall weighted average of at least 65%; have completed, or be about to complete, at least 37.5 points and at least one year of study at the University of Melbourne at the time of application; and have not received a Global Mobility Grant or Scholarship in their current degree.. Melbourne Global Financial Assistance


Up to $2 000 to undertake an approved exchange or study abroad program of more than 12 weeks approved for credit to your degree. Award amounts may vary due to funding.

How to Apply: Students must submit an application directly to Melbourne Scholarships. Closing dates: 20 May for travel from May to October 20 October for travel from November to April. Round 1 applicants will also be considered for an Aitchison Travelling Scholarship

Assistance is awarded on the basis of financial need. The receipt of other benefits or scholarships, destination, length of study and parental assistance are all taken into consideration. Eligible students must be enrolled in the Global Mobility Exchange Program, or an approved study abroad program of more than 12 weeks duration; and must not have received Global Mobility Financial Assistance in a previous round.

Sir Arthur Sims Travelling Scholarship

Applicants must be a graduate of any Australian university, plan to undertake graduate studies or research in Great Britain, have been born in Australia or have parents who have been Australian residents for seven years or more, with the period of their residence commencing within three years of the birth of their applicant. Applicants must: be a University of Melbourne graduate and plan to undertake graduate studies or research in animal husbandry at an overseas institution.

W.E.J. Craig Travelling Scholarship
