CH 3030 Mass Transfer Homework 1 Assigned on: Tuesday, August 14, 2012 Due Date: Thursday, August 23,

2012 1. A small tube 11 cm in height contains water. At the bottom of the tube (from a depth of 0-1 cm) is an immiscible organic solvent. The aqueous solubility of A is approximately 10 mg/L. The diffusivity of A in water is 1 x 10-9 m/s. Estimate the concentration of A in water at a height of 5 cm from the bottom of the tube at 1,5 and 8 hours. Assume that initially, water contains no A. 2. The absorption of ammonia into water from an air-ammonia mixture was performed at 20C and a total pressure of 2 atm. The average ky was estimated as 0.4 lbmol/(hr.ft2.mole-fraction) and kL to be 1.1 lbmol/(hr-ft2-mol/ft3). Equilibrium is approximated by Henrys law to be p = 0.246 c, where p is the partial pressure (in mm Hg) and c is the concentration in aqueous phase for ammonia (lb-mol/ ft3). Estimate the overall gas-phase mass transfer coefficient (KG) in lb-mol/(hr-ft2-atm). Also estimate the percentage of mass transfer resistance in each phase. 3. For the steady state mass transfer in a binary system of solute A in a solvent B (liquid). NA = Flux due to bulk flow (1) + Flux due to Diffusion (2) equation (1) where NA is the total flux of chemical A. a) Write the appropriate expressions for (1) and (2) in equation for mass transfer of A in B. Explain the terms. b) Starting with equation 1, derive the expressions for NA.. c) Simplify the expression you get in part b for diffusion of A in stagnant B. d) What is the expected fractional change in flux if bulk flow is neglected? 4. Starting with equation 5.20 (both relating to FG and FL), derive equations 5.23 and 5.24 in Treybal (page 111, 112 Second Edition). These are similar to the overall mass transfer coefficients (KOG and KOL) discussed in class. 5. A plate column (valve cap) is being considered for the absorption of component A, (methylamine) in an air- using water. Assume the following: a) Ideal gas and liquid conditions b) Isothermal operation c) L/G is constant throughout the tower d) Henrys law applies e) Inlet absorbing liquid contains no A Data provided: a) Henrys law for A: y = 1.18 x b) L/G is 0.7 of (L/G)min

c) d) e) f)

Inlet mole fraction of A in air = 0.1 95% removal of A from the air stream desired. Assume plug flow contact regime for A in over each plate Assume mass transfer coefficient kLa = 0.99 s-1 and kGa = 64.3 s-1 on the plate for transfer of A between vapor and liquid on each tray. Estimate the following a) b) c) d) e) Number of theoretical plates using graphical method Number of theoretical plates using Absorption factor Murphree tray efficiency Overall Tower Efficiency Number of actual trays
